12.16.14 *best Of 2014*05.01.11 Osama Bin Laden Is Dead

*best Of 2014*

I was pretty bad at keeping up with 2014 music, so this was kind of difficult really for just that rreason. I have never been good at ranking things or picking favorites too, but since this is rarbitrary and opinions change all the time, uh...here. Also, hey :)
1Owl John
Owl John

This was actually an easy pick for number one. It just clicked with me easily and quickly, and I've never even listened to Frightened Rabbit. So many feel good moments in this for me, particularly in the first half.

2Every Time I Die
From Parts Unknown

Never cared much about them before Ex Lives, but these last two albums have to be them peaking, for me.

3Have A Nice Life
The Unnatural World

I remember thinking "Defenstration Song" was pretty good. And then they released "Burial Society", and I listened as it steadily gets massive. I loved it after one listen, and while I think the rest isn't quite as good as that song, I always enjoy the moods they employ.

4Keaton Henson
Romantic Works

I'm a sucker for somber, piano driven, neo-classical whatever the hell you want to call this.

5Grouper

Similar sentiments from 4; the two are pretty much a dead heat for me.

6Amerigo Gazaway of Gummy Soul
Yasiin Gaye: The Departure (Side One)

I post on Sputnik one time every 6 months or so when I'm drunk and something I see on here strikes my fancy. Despite this scarcity, I frequent just much as always for the purpose of finding new music. I found this by accident and am listening to it constantly. The first two songs are pretty much perfect, and what Amerigo is doing (not just this album, but his other mashups and ideas) is about the only hip hop thing interesting to me.

7Jakob
Sines

A big welcome back to these guys. They continue to be one of the best post-rock bands to exist.

I dig the vibes on this.

9Pianos Become The Teeth
Keep You

This will be a high rank for most people (or even ranking them at all), but the bright spots of this album are really fucking bright.

I feel the low points of the album are outweighed by the good, enough to land this here.

11The Smith Street Band
Throw Me In The River

This type of stuff usually isn't my bag, so maybe I just found this at a good time.

12Gates
Bloom And Breathe

One of a few on this list that are pretty recent finds. I like it for pretty much the same reasons everyone else does, except one. Fuck Thrice.

13Kurt Travis
Everything Is Beautiful

Seems like this is quite overlooked, but it's a pretty diverse album that ventures well off the path Kurt's bands. The title track is, well, beautiful.

14The Hotelier
Home, Like NoPlace Is There

This verges too much on pop-punk for me (I hate pop-punk). And though I haven't listened to this very much, turning it on and hearing the "Introduction..." makes it allllllll good.

15St. Vincent
St. Vincent

I've always struggled with most indie music, but if this list is any indication, I've warmed up to it. Plus she's from nearby me and pre-pro'd this album in town and I have a big crush on her for many reasons and am I rambling I'm rambling sorry I get flustered.

16Brontide
Artery

Instrumental album with groove, melody, all kinds of tempo and dynamic changes. Pretty fun.

17Talons
New Topographics

Essentially a pretty straightforward instrumental post-rock/metal album. At times reminds me of a less interesting Russian Circles.

18Trophy Scars
Holy Vacants

Haven't listened to this nearly as much as I should, which is probably the biggest reason for being so low.

Back to what I said about struggling to like indie, which puts this lower for me. I enjoy most of it though.
