New Stuff

Stuff I've bought since my last list
1 Cannonball Adderly
Somethin' Else

I'm listening to this album for the first time right now. It's excellent, but I knew it would be with the all star combo: cannonball, miles davis, hank jones, sam jones and art blakey. Doesn't get much better than that.
2Charles Mingus
Mingus Ah Um

I've never been a huge fan of bass solos in jazz, but Mingus puts together such killer groups that it hardly matters. I haven't listened to this one yet, kind of putting it off because I know I'm going to enjoy it so much I'll stop listening to anything else.
3 Charles Mingus
Blues and Roots

Right now I'm listening to this and almost nothing else. A friend of mine played the track Moanin' for me and it was like getting run over by a freight train.
4 Jerry Garcia Band
After Midnight Kean College, 2/28/80

Pretty good show, especially the After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight which smokes. The two songs with Robert Hunter were disappointing but that's how it goes.
5 Tal Farlow
The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow

Bad sound quality, killer music.
6Legion of Mary
Volume 1

This was pretty disappointing, hardly any improvisation, just tepid run throughs of lackluster songs.
7 Grant Green
Am I Blue?

Grant Green is now one of my favorite guitarists and this album didn't disappoint. Green always plays with a little bit of the blues and it's especially apparent on this album.
8John Coltrane
Blue Train

It's JC, do I need a reason?
9Tower of Power
The Very Best Of

I'm starting to get into soul/funk/r&b a lot more lately and I've always enjoyed what I've heard of Tower of Power. This compilation is pretty good and gave me a good idea of which albums to start with.
10Wu-Tang Clan
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

Can't get enough of this one, ODB is especially awesome. WU TANG CLAN AIN'T NUTHIN TA FUCK WITH
BLAOW BLAOW
11 Garcia, Grisman and Rice
The Pizza Tapes

This album is awesome. Two acoustic guitars and one mandolin making gorgeous music and having a good time while doing it.
12 Sergio and Odair Assad
Jardim Abandonado

I believe this album was named by NPR as the best album of 2007. Two superb classical guitarists that I'd never heard of, it's impressive how tight they stay without any kind of rhythm to play along to. Tahhiyya Li Ossoulina is especially good when about halfway through it morphs from a more traditional classical style to a crazy guitar body thumping percussion driven beat.
13 Old Crow Medicine Show
Eutaw

I love OCMS and found this album recently at a used CD store. It's been out of print for several years now and I couldn't believe my good fortune at finding it. It's awesome and I particularly enjoy the early versions of a few songs that got released on later albums in different arrangements.
14 Getz/Gilberto
Getz/Gilberto

One of my friends has been practicing Girl from Ipanema for solo guitar for a long time now and got me interested enough to finally buy this album. I've always been drawn to Bossa Nova and this is a great album to finally really start getting into it.
15 Grateful Dead
Two From The Vault

This is a 1968 show that COOKS. The band is on fire the whole way through, blasting off into space with insane psychedelia. I can't get enough of 1960's dead and this is from a year that doesn't have very many high quality recordings.
16 Funkadelic
Uncle Jam Wants You

I have to listen to this a few more times to know what I think about it. It was certainly interesting, seems like the Funkadelic version of disco.
17 Grateful Dead
Dead Ahead DVD

This is the dvd that documents the highlights of the 1980 Radio City acoustic/electric run. I've only listened to the acoustic songs so far but they were phenomenal, especially the bird song.
18The MC5
Kick Out The Jams

I already had this on CD but picked up a vinyl copy. This album kicks ass and if you don't have it already you are depriving yourself.
19 New Riders of the Purple Sage
NRPS

Fun country, great hangover music.
