Top 10 heaviest Nightwish songs

Too often I hear some metal elitist say "Nightwish is not even metal", "they're basically pop music" or something along those lines. Not that genre matters but as a person whose gateway drug to metal was Nightwish I want to prove that they're not as mellow as it may look like. I don't pay too much attention to the order even though number one has definitely earned its place.

Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean

Total badassery with lots of double bass and great low-pitched vocals by Tapio Wilska. Guitar riffs on this song are one of Emppu's finest.
9Ghost River

Chorus is one the most aggressive ones in the Nightwish catalogue with excellent vocal work by Marco. This is also the song on Imaginaerum where Emppu gets to shine the most.
8Planet Hell

Once is in my opinion "the most metal" Nightwish album. Arguably the movie score influences can be heard clearly for the first time on this album but the riffs are even heavier than before. Planet Hell is a great example of that. Should be played live more often.
7Romanticide

Another gem from Once that has finally got the credit it deserves due to Floor's version from the 2013 Wacken concert. Starts really heavy but gets even heavier after 3 and a half minutes.
6Bye Bye Beautiful

One of the biggest hits from the band but also one of the most aggressive. Lyrics are angry and you can hear it from the instruments as well.
5Tribal

Absolute banger from the brand new album. The riff in the middle is quite possible the most headbangable Nightwish riff ever. Ending sounds like Sepultura. Masterpiece!
4Pharaoh Sails to Orion

Another one from the sophomore record. Filled with great riffs, double bass and an awesome keyboard solo. One of the fastest Nightwish songs.
3Slaying the Dreamer

Starts immediately with a thrashy riff and, again, gets even heavier on the way to the end. Marco's aggressive vocals are on point!
2Yours Is an Empty Hope

If someone had told me ten years ago that you can hear growling in a Nightwish record, I wouldn't have believed it. The song isn't exactly death metal (especially because you have to listen closely to even hear the growls) but it definitely kicks ass.
1Master Passion Greed

Ah, this song. In my top 10 Nightwish tracks ever. I showed this to my friend once and he couldn't believe it was the same band that released songs like Nemo or Elan. To be honest I think the song does have a familiar Nightwish sound but it is indeed the most aggressive and angry track by them. Such a shame they will never play this live.
