Groza

Even my least favourite Mgla album still kicks fucking ass. Although in retrospective it represents a crucial step towards the cementing of their own sound, every song still feels like it could have been so much more. The drumming is much more collected and precise but production-wise, it overwhelms the other instruments in a bad way - even the vocals, which are soul scarringly good. At times, the riffing shows no progression at all. Every bad aspect is somehow compensated with a broader compositional sense.

Mdlosci and Further Down the Nest

I'll take Mdlosci over FDTN but i think they function better as a two-movement piece. While their first respective songs are brilliant and much on the very same vein as Presence, the second ones sound like forgettable leftovers who wouldn't have made it in any way. Objectively there is a notable improvement of composition and production values, the drumming sounds more focused and the vocals are truly haunting but that's just it.

Exercises in Futility

M and Darkside blend each other into sounding like a single power taking the wheel - that's one of the main reasons Mgla works so well; and they prove this very much on this album. The drumwork is much more ambitious and the riffing is more estructurared. Even though it lost some of the raw emotion of the previous releases and halfway it kinda loses its focus, this album is definitely one step higher on composition and musicianship.

With Hearts Toward None

It stands as the pinnacle of M's creative power and their best effort so far. To forge the final fundaments of the band's distinctive sound, the duo gave their very best on this album. Clear evolution on the riffing, a much more dynamic drumwork, the adding of some conceptual elements and the development of the abstract atmospherics that would become their trademark are the reasons this album marks a maturity gap from this and his previous releases.

Presence

Their very first EP became a personal favourite at first play. Objectively, it isn't Mgla's best and it would not represent their black metal brand just yet, but it carries a frost black heart and brandishes every single item of what some people call 'kvlt', with raw emotion and minimalism as few bands did in the past. Its directness, for me, is what make it truly deserve the first place.
Highligth: Presence I
