02.05.18 Top 10 favorite albums of all time.

Top 10 favorite albums of all time.

These are albums that I listen to alot and albums that influenced me as a musician and as a music enthusiast.
10Eminem
The Marshall Mathers LP

This album showed me that rap is just more than talking about hos and how much money you have. Before I heard this album, that's all I thought rap was. And this album really shocked me at times how good Eminem's lyrics can be and how intense rap can be ("Kim").
9Van Halen
Van Halen

This is the album that wanted me to pick up a guitar. I remember hearing songs like "I'm the One", "Little Dreamer", and of course "Eruption" and just having my mind blown. I've kind of grown out of alot of classic rock, but this is one album that I will always admire for sure.
8Metallica
Master of Puppets

This album showed me that Metallica was just more than just a radio friendly metal band. While I've heard songs like "Battery" and the title track so many times now, it's songs like "Disposable Heroes" and "Leper Messiah" that made me a believer in the B side. The lyrics are so relevant today (especially with those previously mentioned tracks) and can be quite an emotional. Also, this was one of the albums that inspired me to pick up a bass and really appreciate bass players.
7HIM
Razorblade Romance

This one seems wierd to put above albums like Master of Puppets, but this album means so much to me. If it wasn't for this album, I wouldn't be here today (I'll just leave it at that). Some of these songs can be really corny, but I owe alot to this album.
6Radiohead
Kid A

While I was definitley impressed with albums like The Bends and OK Computer, this was the album to make me defend Radiohead to my grave. This album proves that they are more than just an amazing alt-rock band, that they can branch out into such different territory and still make amazing and sometimes haunting music. Tracks like "Everything in it's Right Place" and "How to Disappear" cement how emotional this band can be, and how they can take minimal notes and not be all over the place, and make amazing music.
5Deftones
White Pony

This is the album that proved Deftones was more than just "Bored" or "My Own Summer" that they can branch away from the Nu-metal label and create something totally original (at the time). The musicianship was something rarely seen in the Nu-Metal category and really created something special. It's just a very well crafted album from start to finish with hard hitters like "Elite" and "Korea" along with atmospheric and emotional tracks like "Digital Bath", "Pink Maggit", and the very underappreciated "Teenager".
4Tool
Ænima

If you want to talk about a band that totally changed up their sound and are still evolving today, then let's talk about Tool. This was a game changer for Tool, going from the grungy and nu-metal sounds of albums (and ep) "Opiate" and "Undertow", to something more atmospheric, emotional, and bleek. Songs like the title track, "Stinkfist", and "Third Eye" really show the bands riff and melodic writing abilities. And this is one of a few albums that inspired me to write my own music.
3Between the Buried and Me
Colors

This album blew me away and totally changed my perspective on how progressive music can be written. I remember when I first got into the band, alot of people were telling me to check this one out. From the first note of "Foam Born" to the final note of "White Walls" I was mesmerized. This is the modern equivalent of a classical suite.
2Pink Floyd
The Wall

If it was not for this album, I would not be into music as much as I am now. Sure, Van Halen paved the way for me, but this album cemented my love and appreciation for music and especially lyrics. This album took me on a journey when I first heard it and it still does to this day. If anyone wants to learn how to write a rock opera, than look no further than this album.
1Dream Theater
Images and Words

This is pretty much everything I love about "The Wall", but made into metal. This is without a doubt, the most beautiful album I have ever heard in my life. From this first note of "Pull Me Under", to the final riff of "Learning to Live" ( my favorite song of all time) it mesmerizes you, it makes you think, and it is one of the only albums to get me to cry (with songs like "Wait for Sleep" and "Another Day"). And the album is just epic, songs like "Metropolis Part 1", "Pull Me Under", and the duo of "Wait for Sleep" and "Learning to Live", it is just an album I can put on whenever I'm feeling down, happy, or somewhere in between and just have the time of my life.
