Emery - Dear Deat Pt. 2
this song is more of death in a metaphorical sense (but could be viewed as literal death) but it is a pretty powerful song off of the band’s best album.. and what a closer it is. |

08.30.19 | Heyy! This a great theme Diva! I feel I'll love this month.
My (first) rec:
Depressive Silence - "To Die In Your Dream" (https://youtu.be/Ijn09_fJpDk)
An oddly magical dungeon synth track with a very descriptive song title. If you would like to really "feel it" I highly recommend to listen to it at late night. |

09.03.19 | Emery - 3.4 - But I listened to it two days ago when the site was down, so I can no longer remember why. I trust my good judgment, though.
Depressive Silence - 3.3 - There's not much variation, but I like dungeon synth. Mmm, a little more variation a ways in. Yeah, I could definitely get into this.
Oh, and I have a message from our mysterious spreadsheet owner. He wrote on the spreadsheet that he missed Sput. As did all of we poor addicts, my friend. |

One post rock song? WHY NOT TWO?!
Bogatyri - We Lost the Sea
I'm not usually one for long songs anymore, and while I do love post-rock it fails to capture my imagination like it used to, but I find myself always coming back to this record. The central theme around this album is the death of heroes, and this particular track is in honor to the three men who opened the flood gates of the Chernobyl reactor to prevent greater catastrophe.

09.06.19 | "Burning Hearts" -3,8- I enjoyed that, pretty good song! If the rest is as good as this I might give the entire album a listen.
"Dear Death Part 2" -3.2- Hated the beginning, loved everything from the bridge onward.
"To Die in Your Dream" -2.9- Very atmospheric, but I hoped it would go anywhere and didn't really. Also the piano playing was not very good.
"One More Song" -3.5- Liking that jazzy bridge here! The vocals seem a little off for me somehow, but otherwise diverse and enjoyable.
"Floating Away in Every Direction" -4.0- I was enjoying this a lot and then I noticed it was instrumental. This is so in need of some anathema/alcest esque vocals. Still really enjoyed it though
"1-800-Suicide" -3.2- Song's really not my forte, but yeah, I didn't hate it and the lyrics were kinda fun. The melody in the back is quite the earworm as well. |
Divaman
09.06.19 | "Burning Hearts" is definitely my favorite song on the album, but it's a strong album in general, and I actually like their first album, Love at Absolute Zero, even better. |

09.06.19 | a few of their tracks have vocals, but it's the exception versus the rule, for example: https://shop.hammockmusic.com/track/raising-your-voice-trying-to-stop-an-echo-2016-remaster. and yeah, i think all of their tracks with vocals are among their most memorable |

09.06.19 | "One More Song"
I don't like his voice, though I'm a sucker for cello. I don't care for that pick up at all or oh god the "punky" part. This isn't torturing to listen to, but I also don't find it enjoyable all either.
2.4/5
"Floating Away in Every Direction"
Oh look, it's a post-rock song. Yup 5 mins in and it's still a post-rock song.
3/5
"1-800 Suicide"
Fun samples actually, both the vocal ones and guitar one. I like the drums too. I wish I liked rapping more because every other element here is great. Someone make a trip-hop version of this. Best song of the month so far by FAR.

Mastodon - Jaguar God (https://youtu.be/yvSPWG_mE4c)
This song fits perfectly to the month's theme, a fantastic closer track: the story of the desert wanderer (in the album) is inspired by experiences of the band members when their relatives faced with cancer. And this song is about the end of the journey: death. |
Egarran
09.09.19 | Burning Hearts - Hey, that's a Bloody Valentine riff! Really good song, though. It also reminds me a lot of A Triumph For Man by mew. 4.2/5
Dear Death Part 2 - Woah I was afraid my rec would get the lowest rating for this month, so thanks for this. I don't this music. 2/5
To Die In Your Dream - Alright, I'm strapped in for this. Patience, patience. Why does this remind me Do You Dram Of Me by Tiamat? At the end I don't feel closer to any kind of deathwish /: 2.9/5

09.09.19 | "All a Man Can Do" - i listened to it twice to try and give it a fair rating, because i really can't stand this overproduced type of metal. i think it's about the best it can be given the qualities it carries, so i'll give it a 2.5, but i really can't stand it (i'm a bitch): 2.5
"try not to breathe" - sorry zakbro but this does nothing for me: 2.5
"Final Home" - i didn't really like this: 2.5 |

09.10.19 | "omg is hammock going to win this month? i was expecting everyone to react as ars moriendi did"

09.11.19 | LCD Soundsystem - 3.1 - Not usually a fan of this band, but this one is pretty nice. |

ArsMoriendi
09.11.19 | "All a Man Can Do"
Started off synthy and industrial and cool and then quickly turned into bland prog metal. Not for me. Operatic vocals now...
2.5/5
"Try Not to Breathe"
I mean I already love R.E.M. and this song is emotional, depressing, and about an old man ready to die. That vocal effect in the chorus is lightly used and makes it sound cool, plus the instrumentation is like a mix of Celtic and alternative rock, which works here. "Leave it to memory me" nice.
4.8/5
"Final Home"
I like that bass beat and the vocals a lot. Trip-hop rarely disappoints. Ooh record scratching. Trif, you have good taste, bud.
4.1/5
"Memento Mori"
Metally opening riff. CHUGING "YEAH!" BRUTAL DEATH RIFFFFFFFF CHUGGING "OW!" I don't get it. Wait there's gregorian chanting, I get it now! (So this is symphonic metal then?) I feel like most extreme metal just goes in one ear and out the other for me.

also, apologies for the punctuation errors, sputnik on mobile is still a bit buggy. but yeah, it's a catchy and memorable, yet menacingly grim, lofi cloud-rap anthem. plus bonus points to the idea of "white wine" actually being a metaphor for cocaine addiction, and the Amy Winehouse painting in the music video paired with an incredibly utilized sample from The Microphones all giving so much more depth to a song/video that's seemingly so simple. |

25. Lil Peep and Lil Tracy - White Wine: id say these guys should be aborted but lil peep is already dead and that would be in poor taste so instead i'll just say that as long as no one knows ur listening to this (wow that would be embarrassing lel) its not the worst halfwit emo fuccboi music under the sun_2.5/5 |

09.13.19 | multiple people have second recs up |
Trifolium
09.13.19 | POTS I LOVE YOU ALL THESE 5.0S OMG!!!
Yeah we're doing second recs Asdfp! I'm listening and rating tonight. |
ArsMoriendi
09.13.19 | True, even one of my recs got a 5 hah |
DoofDoof
09.13.19 | The scores for the ones I already know:
Try Not to Breathe - that's a 5
1-800 Suicide - solid album track, Diary of a Madman is much better imo, so a 4 out of 5
Nights that Won't Happen - possibly SOTY so far, 5 out of 5 |
Trifolium
09.13.19 | Deservedly so Ars, that's one of their best tracks probably. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.13.19 | Pretty sure every trif song so far has been 5 from me? |
Trifolium
09.13.19 | Yeah I guess so! It is getting scary, enormous amounts of pressure.
I'm especially happy about the Gladys Knight one. That track is a-ma-zing. Those background choirs, the modulation towards the end, the general level of over the top awesomeness, my god. Such a silly but perfect go at a Bond tune. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.13.19 | I cant believe I hadn't heard that before |
Trifolium
09.13.19 | I love how those tracks are such a strong image of their times. Totally outdated this one of course, but all the better for it. |
DoofDoof
09.13.19 | 1. Burning Hearts - solid but this sort of jangle isn't 100% my thing and the song is unnecessarily long for what it's going for [3/5]
2. Dear Death Part 2 - pop punk with baby-ish obnoxious whiney vox and cheesy glossy guitar tones that almost no longer sound like guitars, almost synth-y they're so over produced, song is a total wandering mess too [1/5]
4. One More Song - for me, unlistenable [0.5/5]
5. Floating... - Hammock are always pretty [3.5/5]
6. 1-800 Suicide - [4/5]
7. All a man can do - industrial strength quasi-operatic cheese with prog aspirations (of course) [0.5/5]
8. TNTB - [5/5]
9. Final Home - [4/5] love instrumental hip hop in this style, slightly uneventful even for within the genre but cool
10. Mementi Mori - adequate doom [3/5]
11. Someone Great - one of the most overrated artists of all time I'm sorry, don't get his schtick, serviceable, still would rather listen to the Juan MacLean over this :/ [3/5]
12. NTWH - [5/5]
13. Bogatyri - actually knew this one too, WLTS are always decent post-rock [3.5/5]
14. About to Die - and this one too, I remember this album being slightly off-putting at the time and feel the same listening to this now, still not their best [3/5]
15. License to Kill - obvs know this, mega 80s, not the greatest Bond theme but alright in context [2.5/5]
16. Candour - that sort of accent and vocal delivery again, can't take it seriously, seems like a parody - 'my gerbil died, they put him in a little box, I hate my teacher now' sort of thing [0.5/5]
17. Jaguar God - I'd listened to this before but couldn't recall...I still can't recall, a band on autopilot gobbling up the benjamins from a duped fanbase [2.5/5]
18. Army - Sowing thinks this is one of the albums of the year right? Like MMJ with all testosterone removed [2.5/5]
19. Who Killed RJ - wtf, lol, is the rest of the album like this. I can't imagine listening to 45 minutes of this [1/5]
20. Heart Attacks - I listened to this album upon release due to sput hype, bad [1/5]
21. Mercy Seat - [4.5/5] know this one too, not my fave Cave but still iconic song etc
22. Suicide - [3.5/5] lo-fi production of grandiose symphonic black metal is sort of a strange dichotomy but one of the only tunes so far I liked more and more the longer I listened.
24. Samson - yo yo, Reggie Spektor the va-j-j inspectah. Not a big fan of Fiona Apple piano ballad stuff [1.5/5]
25. White Wine - [1.5/5] music is menacing, alright, instrumental would get a 2.5...voxals get a 1 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.13.19 | I love how doof 5s both songs that I called out for being baby boomer folk fest music fodder |

09.13.19 | I've got to the age that someone I know dies every 6 months so my rec is starting to smart a bit considering I've been listening to it for 20 years.
I know it's a bit unremarkable in most regards - last 60 seconds grab me every time. |
Egarran
09.13.19 | Do you remember 2016, where everybody died, and people were like 'calm down, nigga, you're just getting older, this is how it's gonna be from now so put some cement in the holes of your motherfucking basement' hrm I'm listening to some rap while writing this.
ANYWAY it turned out only nobodies died in '17 and '18 so they were wrong and there will be years when you feel young again. When Keith goes it's time to worry. |
garas
09.13.19 | Doof, you missed out 3. :'[
I'll catch up, hopefully, today. |
Egarran
09.13.19 | Floating Away in Every Direction - Very pleasant. It does sound like 100 other bands but that comes with the genre I suppose. 3.5/5
1-800-Suicide - It must be a classic because of the lyrics, cuz damn thas some lazy beats nigga. 2.8/5
All a Man Can Do - Can I interest you in some Ayreon instead of this? Many parts of this rubbed me the wrong way, but esp that Spanish guitar. It does get better as the climax approaches. 2.7/5
Try not to Breathe - I have always been taught to scoff at this band and its vulgar normcore, so I'm conditioned to rate this low: 2/5
Final Home - Why does this song exist, though? Apart from that one electronic burp sound, this is what they play at the supermarket. 2/5 |
Trifolium
09.13.19 | Egarrannnn :-(((((((((((((((((
I get it, not for everyone. Is the answer ''It exists because it makes Trif incredibly happy'' satisfactory? |
Egarran
09.13.19 | Very satisfactory. Have you ever heard Groove Armada?
They actually play this song at my supermarket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg3wrLWAlU0 |
Scheumke
09.13.19 | You can always interest me in some Ayreon Eg, even seen him live twice last year (was amazing). I get why people don't like it, its really an acquired taste I guess. |
Egarran
09.13.19 | Oh I feel envy. I've seen a lot of live songs on yt and it always seems really good. |
Scheumke
09.13.19 | Yeah it was fantastic and very well thought through. Not everyone was pitch-perfect, but it didn't matter because it was such a fun event. Saw them in 013 the first time he did the shows and at Graspop (the only festival show they ever did). I believe there are a couple of shows at my hometown this weekend, but I believe they've been sold out for months. |
Divaman
09.13.19 | We Lost the Sea - 3.0 - I didn't know what to do with this. After the intro, I thought it was going to develop into something more, but it didn't really. On the other hand, I like the basic sound of it. |
Divaman
09.13.19 | Damn it, Potts and Doof! You two have fucked up my parade. |

And yeah I've heard some things from them, but they're not for me. A little too smooth or something. I love smoothness, as long as there's an edge too, some darkness. |
Divaman
09.13.19 | Yes, if anyone has second picks, now is the time. We have three spots left, and I also invited some of the stragglers who haven't been here in a while to come and rec. |

ArsMoriendi
09.13.19 | "Bogatyri"
Slow, but with a buildup, it seems. This works well as background music, but I'd be lying if I said that I found it engaging. It got heavier now and it slightly more engaging, it only took 9 minutes! This is okay, but not really for me. A bit colorless.

Trifolium
09.13.19 | Burning Hearts: This was great. Loved it. Very 90s sounding in a way, great vox, lovely atmosphere. On the list the album goes. Month is off to a good start! 4.2
Dear Death Part 2: Not for me, angsty teen music part 2. 2.0
To Die In Your Dream: Some more Zelda dungeon music! This is quite nice actually. But I also see Roller Coaster Tycoon now, with a Haunted House playing this while guests are drowning, puking and demolishing rubbish bins. Oh wait. There's piano and synth-violins now. That I cannot handle. And the rhythm is kinda losing form a little. 2.3
One More Song: Aiaiaiaiai no I'm sorry. 1.5
Floating Away In Every Direction: I always thought it was spooky that this coat is standing all by itself. Eeeek, Track is alright. Budgie you know this is one of our eternal divisions. Especially the cello ending is too much for me. 2.2

Trifolium
09.13.19 | 1-800 Suicide: This. Rules. On the list it goes! Number two this month. Thanks Asdfp! Beat is amazing, samples are great, vox have great flow. The 90s were the best decade ever hmmmm. 4.2
All A Man Can Do; The synths and vox are not my thing. Sorry dude! There's a chance 16yo Trif would have enjoyed this though... Also: why is it 9+ minutes?! 2.3
Try Not To Breathe: Nice. REM is cool. Something about them. 4.0
Memento Mori: A journey through the morgue with lots of riffing. Awesomely diverse and cold as helllllll. 4.0
Someone Great: Well done Ars, I think you win September with this one. One of their best tracks and that is saying something. Still such an amazing album. My god I've missed it and didn't realise until now. 5.0

Bogatyri: Production is good. Some nice sounds. It's suuuuuuper long though. 2.8
About To Die: Haha what is this Ars!? Sounds kind of fun actually. Nicely weird. That percussionist is having a blast. But I'm not sure if I ever want to hear it again. 3.1

09.14.19 | "And the rhythm is kinda losing form a little." + "Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the sloppy rhythm on that one track"
(I'm pretty sure everyone notied that.) In my defense, that song is from a live recorded demo from '96. So personally I'm indulgent about every mistake. |
Divaman
09.14.19 | Dirty Projectors - 2.1 - I have this album, but the only song I like on it is the title track (which is great). I hate the lead vocals on this. |
Egarran
09.14.19 | Ian b >i don't wanna instinctually rate on first/second listen
*Impressed applause*
Let's dwell on this sentence and marvel in awe at Ian's level of dedication.
I tend to have a rating ready after 20 seconds. |
Trifolium
09.14.19 | Haha yeah, relatable Egarran. |
Divaman
09.14.19 | Heh heh. Yeah, sometimes I listen twice. But usually I listen once, write a score down about a half a minute in (or at least after the first chorus), then hold off until the end of the song to hit send so I can adjust it up or down if it gets better or worse. |
ArsMoriendi
09.14.19 | I don't pick a score until the song has only a minute left... unless the song is long as fuck |

09.16.19 | "Memento Mori" - That is some great quality doooOOooom! Excellent use of synths! 4.0
"Someone Great" - Um, nope. 2.2
"Nights That Won't Happen" - Nice song. A bit long. 3.2
"Bogatyri" - Too post-rocky... second half was nice, but alltogether "less could have been more". 3.3
"About to Die" - This was a weird one. It was interesting enough to keep me listening, but I'm not sure how I felt about this. 2.5
"License to Kill" - Ahh, retro-shock! 3.0
"Candour" - This reminded me to what I used to listen to when I was little. Nostalgic. 3.2 |

09.16.19 | ''long beard album from 2015''
It was on the planning for today! Could use some of those vibes right now. |
Egarran
09.16.19 | I don't know what's harder to imagine: The scale of the universe or Ars sitting through an entire Xasthur song. |
Trifolium
09.16.19 | Yeah, thought the same thing actually. From the moment the theme was announced. |
Divaman
09.17.19 | Mastodon - 3.1 - Not bad, but a little boring. I'd have liked it better if they'd have cut the song in half. |
Egarran
09.17.19 | LCD - Music's good, vocalist average. 3.6/5 |
Divaman
09.18.19 | There are scores of the spreadsheet for "Try Not to Breathe" and "Final Home". Do these belong to you Asdfp277 (they're in your column), or are they yours accidentally entered into the wrong column, Scheumke? They look weird, because if they belong to you Asdfp277, they're the first (and only) two songs you've rated this month. |
Divaman
09.19.19 | Bad Books - 2.7 - interesting lyrically, so-so musically, feels very long.
B. Dolan - 1.0 - not really a song. I'd rate it higher as a poem, though.
Alkaline Trio - 3.6 - Now this is more like it. Short and melodic. |
garas
09.20.19 | "Army" - Well, I'm very indifferent about this song. Nothing really grabbed my attention. 2.5
"Who Killed Russell Jones?" - Is it music? (I'm sorry Sam, I swear I have nothing against you!!) 1.0
"Heart Attacks" - Not bad, perfect length for this song. 3.1 (Random thought: the style of the album's title reminded me a lot to Fenriz's handwriting with the upside down Ts) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts

09.20.19 | I'm planning to do so in a few hours/this weekend |
ArsMoriendi
09.21.19 | "License to Kill"
Sounds like the definition of "adult contemporary radio." This song makes me feel gross, like a very humid July afternoon.
2.3/5
"Candour"
Ew, even pretty violins can't save emo vocals. +.2 for violins being pretty.
1.7/5
"Jaguar God"
Bland vocals, "nu-prog" guitar, so far this isn't my thing, but I guess that it isn't terrible. Now it's doing that metal buildup thing idk...ugh and there's the growling. He reminds me of a pimply burping goblin now. A talented band of goblins though, I guess.
2.5/5
"Army"
Holy fuck, this song is almost 9 minutes, but I'm already bored 1 minute in. This is gonna be rough. Holy crap that pickup is so Coldplay ugh. Holy shit, 2 minutes later and this STILL sounds like Coldplay. This barely changing sog could've been 4 minutes, you know and I would've experienced almost the exact same content. Fuck this. -.5 for overstaying its visit by over 5 minutes.
1.3/5 |
budgie
09.21.19 | are you on ur period |
ArsMoriendi
09.21.19 | "Who Killed Russell Jones?"
A cappella rapping? Is this technically music? I guess that there's a chorus that he sings. I know that rapping is a musical vocal style, but without music behind it, it just sounds like slam poetry. Which isn't a type of music, it's a type of non-musical poetry.
2.5/5
"Heart Attacks"
Radio rock? Hell, this might be the best thing I've heard from this list all day and I still don't really like it. Generic background music (especially that guitar,) pop punky vocals. But it's catchy at least.
2.9/5 |
Asdfp277
09.21.19 | "are you on ur period"
he's been on it for a couple of years already lol |

09.21.19 | "Who did that by the way? Pots?"
Of course it was Pots. |
Trifolium
09.21.19 | Classic.
I'm going to rate tonight. Promise. |
Trifolium
09.21.19 | Candour: Oh my this is horrible. Reminds me of being into Sum 41 when I was 17 because a guy I had the biggest crush on liked them. Aaawww, poor young Trif. No. 2.0
Jaguar God: I haven't really ever paid this band much attention I have to admit. Production is quite alright so far, which is a big issue in most modern metal for me. The clean vox are a bit too whiny. You just know they want you to feel an awful lot but it isn't happening. The eastern-ish part that started now is kind of cool, but it also sounds like Dream Theater with that synth and another vocalist (?). Hmmm. I guess they're not really my thing. 2.4
Army: WHOA what's up with all these loooooooooooooooong recs!? Hello!? It's not like I've got nothing else to do!! Plus this doesn't warrant being almost 9 minutes at all. Oof that voice at 1:18, the Passanger one, has that obnoxious nasal quality. Apparently I'd rather have 3 shitty minutes of teenage high school crush memories over 9 whiny ones. Does this ever stop!? 1.7
Who Killed Russel Jones?: Come on, vid starts promising, please save this session. Hmm, this is just an a-capella dude. I'm not all that into this funny sketch kind of music. 1.5
Heart Attacks: Aiaiaiai what is with all this angsty teenage music? Don't like this either. Maybe I'm not in the mood for Song Of The Day right now? 1.8
|
Trifolium
09.21.19 | The Mercy Seat: This is quite nice, but very long again. The atmosphere is nicely being developed as this goes along. I wouldn't want a whole album in this vein though. 2.9
Suicide: Love the flow of this one, the synths are a little out of place, the washes of guitar are nice, like the mist on the picture. Vocals are a bit flat though, and I'm not very keen on the topic of these kind of bands, suicide isn't cool. 3.3
Phantom Walls: Bass is nice here. Is it an upright one? Sounds like it! Plus the rhythm is cool. And it's nicely compact and they keep it small which is great. Wonderfully produced too! And now there's very many people singing which is cosy I guess. 3.3
Samson: I like Spektor, used to be into her in my teens. Sweet song, nicely constructed arc, keeps the attention. 3.5
White Wine: Ha, the beginning of this was kind of nice, but I hate the trap whatever and I felt it coming. But beneath that hideous beat and vox is a nice string instrument drone. That drone kind of works! Plus it's mixed with lots of clarity. I can't believe I'm going to give this a 2.6 |

09.22.19 | Nights That Won't Happen - "It's quite clear what this is about, let's be honest here." Tell us nonetheless.
Pretty song, somewhat Cohen-ish. 3.5/5
Bogatyri - Chernobyl was a good show, they could definitely have used this for the credit roll. Epic and emotional. But as you will notice, we downrate long songs. I don't though, because my rec was also long af. 4/5
About To Die - I dislike this band, always have. Although this sounds different from the surreal afro-beat songs I heard. Still hard to get through. 2.5/5
Licence to Kill - Woah, that's too much 80's. Everything screams fake and superficial. I guess we all have a psychopath Bond-like superego inside, and this is clearly just a fascist love song. 1.8/5
"This song makes me feel gross" A rare and precious high five to Ars. |
Trifolium
09.22.19 | Haha yeah Egarran it's 80s overload. Hyper plastic and thin. |

09.22.19 | "The Mercy Seat"
Holy shit that intro is cool. This radiates weird badass energy. Honestly, I have absolutely no idea why not I'm already into Nick Cave. I like pretty much everything I've heard from him. The violins are epic and the repetition actually is oddly engaging. Love it.
4.8/5
"Suicide"
This is fairly chill so far. The horns are pretty. There's growling, but it's relegated to the background, so it's not too hard to tolerate. I don't really hate this growling as much since it isn't mixed high enough to be annoying, but I also don't really like it either. The rest of the song mostly feels ethereal and even twinkly? It's boring, but not awful.

09.22.19 | oh ya i got a 2.6/5 from ars that's like a 8/10 in normal human speak |

09.22.19 | 1. My Favorite - “Burning Hearts” a lyrically somber love song, the contrasting, dreamy instrumentation paired with absolutely beautiful vocal harmonies make this quite an underrated dream-pop gem. 4.2/5
2. Emery - “Dear Death Part 2” this song has some decent vocal moments, even if a lot of the vocals are uninventive, the vocal trade-offs are refreshing enough. but as any scene kid classic (which is a 3), the guitar tones and chord progressions aren't nique by any measure of the word, plus the synthesizers reach peak levels of cheesiness here. the lyrics actually manage to hold their own, and while the vocals are blatantly melodramatic, it's apart of the shtick, which this song pulls off decently enough. 2.8/5
3. (not listened enough yet)
4. Lagwagon - “One More Song” while instrumentally basic in the rhythm department, the bass lines and guitar leads make a bright shining contrast to the heart-tugging lyrics based around the band's loss of a member in Tony Sly. the song comes to a bittersweet conclusion, and while the Neutral Milk Hotel reference made me roll my eyes a bit, the song still has many redeeming qualities to make it worth remembering. 3.6/5
5. Hammock - “Floating Away in Every Direction” there's very few songs that leave me speechless in the way that their sheer beauty is enough to make the song warranted for repeated listens. and “Floating Away in Every Direction” has many different build-ups that almost all end in some sort of euphoric release, but each segment of the song is refreshing enough in its own right, i could listen to this singular song on repeat 10 times and not be bothered. absolutely perfect ambient/post-rock piece. 5/5
6. Gravediggaz - “1-800-Suicide” a horrorcore classic, each verse here has its own reason to stand out, with incredible and plentiful tongue-in-cheek lines about different ways to kill yourself. but the real shining moment on this song is RZA/RZArector, and his bombast of energy that closes out the track. overall, a great early horrorcore banger. 4.2/5

8. R.E.M. - "Try Not to Breathe": 3.3
It's ok, not super into it but I can see it growing a lot.
9. DJ KRUSH - "Final Home": 3.7
Really like the beets
17. MASTODON - "Jaguar God": 3.2
Really mundane tbh, not feeling a lot and it's kinda boring.
22. COLDWORLD - "Suicide": 3.8
I really liked this, esp the intro but it was consistent overall.
26. FLYING LOTUS - "Coronus the Terminator": 4.3
Fantastic song + music video.
27. BLACK MOON - "Reality": 2.5
Not bad at all but didn't really care about the beats nor the lyrics.

09.23.19 | 26. Coronus - [3.5] FlyLo is great obviously, but I prefer the new album to this one and a track like this...it's good, but I never quite fell in love with the parent album and out of context this is intermission-y, yes, if still nice.

3.5/5
"White Wine"
Oh yay! Trap snares are the best. And "yuh' such a great and totally not overused thing to say! Those lyrics are so deep too and those vocals sound so pretty and vivid. Wow, Myspace? What a neat callback! I wish I had a guy who would call me his "pretty white bitch" :(

The Mercy Seat - I have a hateful relationship with this song. It's probably good, but sometimes when we were partying, this annoyingly drunk dude would hog the player, put this on and start singing along like it was the most profound shit he knew. And some of the others thought we should let him enjoy that, because he had a lot of problems. And he's dead now. So yeah, strong PTSD triggers here. Have a random 3/5

09.29.19 | "Corunus the Terminator"
The backmasked electronic intro was fairly long, but now that that cool percussion came in it really works. Musically, this sounds almost like deconstructed soul music brought up to the modern period. It's rather pleasant, but I can't say it grabbed in in the way that I wanted it to.
3.5/5
"Reality"
I mean clearly I like the string samples and the percussion is fine, but I can't help, but find this one super bland. Despite my usual neutrally on most hip hop, "1-800-Suicide" had such a catchy hook that I couldn't help but give it a high score. This however, doesn't have that hook for me. It's not bad though of course. +.1 for the strings.
3.1/5
The Body of an American"
I've heard an entire Pogues album believe it or not, and three times if I recall correctly. If I Should Fall from Grace with God is one of my 3s. This band is clearly listenable and I get why someone would love this, but I can't help, but find it corny and derivative. This would make good beer singalong music. -.2 fo that longass outro that honestly ruined the mood.
2.8/5 |

09.29.19 | "The Copper Top"
Is that Shrek? Not that I think all Scotsmen sound like Shrek, but DAMN this one sure does. I can't un-hear it now. I'm sorry Doof. "'See, the trouble with you, Donkey, is that you're top heavy', said Shrek as he dressed Donkey up." On a more serious note: no singing, just lame Lifetime Movie music with some sad Scotsman talking? Ugh.
2/5
"La Poderosa Muerte"
Holy crap, 11 minutes? What a way to end a month! So far the pan flute is making this so nerdy hmmmm. When I took the Uber home from the station yesterday after a night out (it was a good night too) the lady driving the Uber was playing songs by Yes, which reminded me of when I used to listen to them frequently, so maybe it's my mood, but I'm feeling an extra appreciation for prog right now. Bleeps and bloops, fancy piano, and an overall alien vibe. I like this, but I don't love it. This actually went by fairly quickly mentally for me.

I was sitting in the second row, and the stage had rotated so that her back was facing me. She was wearing a pretty short skirt, and when she bent over to either pick up or put down a tambourine, I got flashed. I think she figured she was protected from behind by the amps, but there was a small gap between them, and I was at just the right angle. It was quick, but memorable. Coronus, The Terminator: Nicely atmospheric work by Mr FlyLo. Tried some of his work during his ping-pong-ball beat and general strangeness period, but that didn't really do it for me. This is a little better! Still reminds me of the Adventure Time soundtrack though. 3.3
Reality: Omg that beat is delish. Can't touch 90s samples if you ask me. Plus that violin sample is so Massive Attack! Where do I know it from? Yeah, Massive. Influential sample apparently, Summer In The City. Amazing track, is there more like it in their discog? 4.2
Body Of An American: Reminds me of one of my best friends from high school, her dad was mega into the Pogues. 3.3 for nostalgia and that perfect clover leaf of course.
The Copper Top: Yeah ok. Not for me, a little too sugary. 2.4
La Poderosa Muerte: L O N G G G G G ! ! ! A proggy Spanish rock opera. Weird and some seriously outdated synthesizer sounds that remind me of Knights And Merchants. Not for me. 2.3 |
