02.19.22 | I don't think any rock genre is a top 5 priority
synythpop, disco, new wave, and probably trap are prob the most needed and I say baroque pop because I'd kill to have that on my chart :P |
Supercoolguy64
02.19.22 | shit there's no disco tag already? we need that one asap
drone metal i think is a little unnecessary since you can just add "drone" and the ever-so-vague "metal" (or better "doom metal") tags. same thing about "screamo", every skramz band has "emo" + "hardocre" anyways |

02.19.22 | same thing about "screamo", every skramz band has "emo" + "hardocre" anyways
confusing though because that could also apply to more melodic hardcore or 1st wave emo acts which definitely aren't screamo, plus its an absolutely massive subgenre, its not like drone metal which is comparatively small as a scene |

rabidfish
02.19.22 | There's a band? |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Yeah lol. I haven’t checked them but funny enough they aren’t even the only band named after a classic slowcore album (there’s also a band called I Could Live In Hope) |
Demon of the Fall
02.19.22 | Yeah the lack of screamo is a big one. I don’t think emo/hardcore suffices for the reason Sint outlined, could easily be a completely different core sound… which is hella misleading for people
Huge omission, I’d put it up there with Disco as one of the biggest. I definitely think Slowcore isn’t far behind mind. |
Pikazilla
02.19.22 | fastcore > slowcore |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Screamo and disco probably more needed than slowcore but slowcore is definitely the one I personally have most felt the lack of. Or maybe chamber pop. |
ArsMoriendi
02.19.22 | I still hold that baroque pop > chamber pop in terms of need |
ArsMoriendi
02.19.22 | What'd be more tragic:
a 60s baroque pop band getting tagged chamber pop or a 2000s chamber pop artist getting tagged baroque pop? |
GhandhiLion
02.19.22 | For slowcore it would not be incorrect to put indie rock instead. There are other missing genres that are needed more. |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Eh, maybe it’s my bias but I’d argue chamber pop is more expansive and covers more acts than baroque pop, especially since baroque pop is a more scene/time period limited movement and hence is a lower priority. RYM has about 1,000 more chamber pop tagged releases than baroque pop too FWIW. |
GhandhiLion
02.19.22 | New wave is rock ars |
Pikazilla
02.19.22 | chamber pop is more needed than baroque pop, because I'll know what shit to avoid |
DANcore
02.19.22 | How about just art pop? It’d be nice and vague and all encompassing, just the way Sput likes it |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Ghandhi, I don’t buy RYM’s categorization that slowcore is entirely contained by indie rock. IMHO the stylistic ethos/songwriting approach to the genre applies to some non-rock stuff too. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.22 | "synythpop, disco, new wave, and probably trap are prob the most needed and I say baroque pop because I'd kill to have that on my chart :P"
Yeah I voted for synthpop and disco. Not for new wave though since I thought that one was added already.
Sputnik never stops to dissapoint me |
ArsMoriendi
02.19.22 | "New wave is rock ars"
Not always, sometimes it's all synths? Some 80s synthpop is labeled new wave...
Like Eurythmics come to mind |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Well that’s an issue of categorizing whole bands with a single genre rather than individual songs/albums. New Wave is def a rock genre, one that happens to overlap frequently and have shared influence with synthpop. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.22 | What Boney said
My "extra suggestion" on the poll was precisely that. To be able to tag albums instead of bands as a whole
Obviously I have no hopes of it happening |
Supercoolguy64
02.19.22 | I like the thing RYM does where users can vote tags for individual albums, if there’s one thing Sputnik should ape from that site it’s that |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.22 | Sub genres would be dope as well |
DoofDoof
02.19.22 | Boney join me with: Slowcore, Chamber Pop, Sophisti Pop, Krautrock, Garage Rock
All classic genres |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | That’s a mighty fine ballot there Doof!
Garage rock is essential just to put an end to all the rock bands with the garage tag |
DoofDoof
02.19.22 | True, but then if you have a genre as niche as 'Melodic Death Metal' you can have 'Garage Rock' |
Aberf
02.19.22 | add True Widow on that list. |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Haven’t heard ‘em otherwise I certainly would BB |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.22 | Assuming we end up getting a few new genres I don't see why we couldn't get tons of them. Don't know why it would be easy to add a couple but not to add a lot
What I mean is that I'd like to be hopeful and think that they might end up adding many genres, with poll just working as some way to priotize some of them |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | I’ve had the same thought but I’m not gonna get my hopes up too much. What may make it more difficult is that new genres need to be coded into the hierarchy (rudimentary as the current one is) so it’s not as easy as just expanding a list. |
GhandhiLion
02.19.22 | "non-rock stuff too"
What artists do you think it applies to? |
DoofDoof
02.19.22 | I was thinking just the 'winning' genre would be added but this might be an annual vote? |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Ghandhi, maybe not whole artists but a lot of the more singer/songwriter and country/folk influenced slowcore stuff isn’t really rock and there are individual songs that I’d describe as slowcore that are based on piano/acoustic guitar. Think some of Jason Molina’s stuff, Smog too. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.22 | Smog and Songs Ohia were the first ones that came into my mind as well. Red House Painters as well
unless we automatically start counting as rock anything that has an electric guitar on it |
theBoneyKing
02.19.22 | Yeah. I mean, all those artists have rock songs, but many aren’t. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.22 | all of this works on favour of my theory that sub genres are really needed |
GhandhiLion
02.19.22 | Yeah there were some country folk artists that are connected to or partly influenced by slowcore. It probably has something to do with Cowboy Junkies and the first Palace Brothers album.
|
theBoneyKing
02.20.22 | Yeah those are good shouts too. “I See a Darkness” (the song) is another good example as well. |

GhandhiLion
03.12.22 | I'm gonna report you all to the genre gestapo if slint gets a slowcore tag. The math rock tag is bad enough because ik most of you haven't heard tweez :^] |
theBoneyKing
03.12.22 | Yeah Slint shouldn’t have a slowcore tag, I was kinda playing with that one (though I do believe their aesthetic and songs like “Washer” and “For Dinner” are super foundational for the style) |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.12.22 | slint are about as slowcore as they are post rock
but mainly they are slint
STAND PROUD ALL YE WHO VOTED SLOWCORE |
GhandhiLion
03.12.22 | Nah they are more slowcore than math rock tho. At least on spiderland |
theBoneyKing
03.19.22 | The way I see the slowcore tag on literally any album on RYM and immediately want to listen to it.
Am I ok? Maybe not… |
constantchange
04.08.22 | I'm the opposite, I can never bring myself to try anything that's called "slowcore". Until now I guess, trying out this Pinebender album (didn't know they were considered slowcore until after starting to listen to it)
Not bad and not as boring / bleak as I imagined. And Slint is cool... but apparently not slowcore lol |
theBoneyKing
04.08.22 | Well I hope that opens your mind a bit more to the genre! I haven’t heard of Pinebender but it looks like they’re more primarily an emo/post-rock band with slowcore as an influence (a common combination). Look cool.
Slint are obviously a lot more than slowcore but they were absolutely a major influence on a lot of these bands and I would argue that “Washer” and “For Dinner” are straight up slowcore songs (maybe even “Don, Aman” too, but that’s a bit more of a stretch/less definitive of the core slowcore sound). |
Demon of the Fall
04.08.22 | Slint slowcore pretty hard at times from where I’m sitting. Yeah I should check out more of this stuff.
Really enjoyed that 40 Watt Sun album which certainly seemed to lean in that direction. |
hangth3dj
04.13.22 | What's closest on this list to 40 Watt Sun's latest album? (and to a slightly lesser extent, Wider Than The Sky) |
theBoneyKing
04.13.22 | For stuff similar to Perfect Light, 4 is your best bet if you don’t know Kozelek’s works (must of course be noted that the guy is a known douchebag and accused of multiple counts of sexual misconduct - make of that what you will). 5, 9, 13, and 17 may apply as well.
For Wider Than the Sky, definitely try 10, 14 could work too. |
Icebloom
10.18.23 | So this never happened : ( |
theBoneyKing
10.18.23 | and I'm still mad about it 😠 |
Sunnyvale
10.18.23 | Yeah, it's the glaring omission. I'm happy we got a bunch more genre tags but it's hilarious that funeral doom and melodic black metal (!) were added but not slowcore (yet). |
