05.27.22 | Might sound sorta stupid, especially as someone who just voted him... but I think Andre benefits a ton in these sort of discussions due to having Big Boi. Like think about it, the large majority of rappers have to write 2-3+ verses per song. Andre does usually one verse per Outkast song (if at all).
Every Andre verse is the hardest shit ever because anything that's even slightly less than that simply gets left on the cutting room floor, and just about nobody else who seriously gets put into these discussions has that luxury. |

05.27.22 | Big L is a goat for sure. And this is gonna sound awful but hear me out here… but he is one of those rappers whose career benefited from their untimely death immortalizing them as a legend in that he never had a chance to put out a bunch of terrible albums like most 90s rappers did in the late 90s and 00s. And even still, The Big Picture is vastly worse than Lifestylez of da Poo. I don’t think he would be as big of a part of the discussion if he was still around today. |

05.27.22 | Eminem had the best flow no doubt |
notagenius
05.27.22 | ^^ More than that, it was only after his death that he gained real popularity. Also not quite convincing to question his consistency by The Big Picture, we have no idea where that album came from who worked on that. It probably should have been a record filled with songs like Ebonics. He left the mainstream label after the debut. If he accepted putting out craps, then why didn't he stay with Columbia.
Also I simply don't think Lifestylez should have been his best record, that one is not perfect. You say he died early so he didn't have a chance to release craps, I say it left him no chance to set a perfect and better one. |

The landscape of hip hop got real ugly a few years after that. And big picture came out in 2000 and was not good. Name one artist who originated in the 80s or 90s whose magnum opus came in the 2000s or later? I would say the chances of big l having released a better album than lifestylez are near zero. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.27.22 | Sure, perhaps big picture could have been a better album. But based off of my knowledge of hip hop history my best educated guess is that even with complete control it still wouldn’t have been as good as lifestylez and neither would anything else after it |
Storm In A Teacup
05.27.22 | In response to Potsy in terms of reaching critical acclaim again in a later era of their career, can I wonder aloud about Nas fitting that bill, because of the whole Grammy win etc in last couple years? |
Storm In A Teacup
05.27.22 | I figured the debut album would pop up when I googled “Nas’ most critically acclaimed album” but it was actually the Untitled album. |
Storm In A Teacup
05.27.22 | And I don’t think Nas recently had a magnum opus compared to his debut or his actually best album, Distant Relatives, but the success he has found currently is better than we would have guessed he could reach again. |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.27.22 | Jay z has no magnum opus and is terrible |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.27.22 | That’s an interesting point storm but I guess it depends what metric you want to use. I don’t think you’ll find anyone amongst the hip hop community touting anything other than illmatic as nas’s magnum opus so perhaps mainstream critical success isn’t the most ideal metric |

05.27.22 | In the 2000s, commercial business was too overwhelming. Even the success of Outkast and Missy Elliott can only be described as commercial. Not in terms of the quality of their work. |

This brings up a facet of the conversation that always tripped me up. “Favourite rapper” is so singular. It took me a long time to settle because I like many for different things. If you take production skills into account it’s a different answer. If you take legacy into account it’s different again. If it’s a group it’s different. So many angles. For instance, Buckshot is one of my favourite rappers for giving me my favourite hip hop album of all time and one of my favourite singles of all time as well as being responsible for bringing several of my other favourite groups into the spotlight so that’s where legacy is important. But I only really like one or two of his albums… most of his stuff after enta da stage is not good, and I don’t think he’s a particularly amazing rapper, he was just perfect for that album and he deserves a lot more credit than he gets for reviving east coast hip hop. Similar for slum village. I don’t have a favourite rapper in that group they just work as a whole to be GOAT.
Realizing Kool keith was my favourite rapper is a recent revelation because he has an incredible legacy, unmistakable voice and sound, unique flow and aesthetic, works with some of the most iconic producers out there, is responsible for numerous of the best styles of hip hop, has worked with artists bridging the entire hip hop compass east to west to south, and he has an actual fuckton of good music that transcends the typical “these years were bad for hip hop and these were good” thing. He’s basically just great from every angle. Bruh basically has a magnum opus PER ALIAS |

it's a little different from "best artist" which is where i think a lot of people get mixed up. i.e. picking ye as your favorite rapper shows that you either don't know shit about rap or you misunderstood the question (or, more likely, both) |

Its probably the first MC apart from Snoop and doggystyle that I would play over and over as a metal head when NO ONE was listening to rap in my circles in the 90s until then and what kicked off a love for hip hop 90s shit into rawkus then def jux and stuff. Although I would say Billy Woods/LUM and Elucid runs it close now. Breeze kinda just put out a dud but his game on CBS is untouchable also.

05.28.22 | Deltron 3030 was my gateway rap album
Haven't seen a mention of it though its quality is more down to production than Del per se |

05.28.22 | Viper for me |
FadedSun
05.28.22 | Surprised no one has listed Freddie Gibbs on here. I didn't even want to make a single choice haha |
Avagantamos
05.28.22 | Kool Keith and Del are probably my #2 and 3 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.28.22 | @avagantamos well your top 3 makes me want to check your #1 out, I always assumed he was just kinda another run of the mill ASAP gang kinda dude
@fadedsun I actively dislike Freddie Gibbs tbh, his career would be a lot more peripheral to me if it wasn’t for the fact that he does so much work with madlib. There are just so many other rappers I’d rather see madlib work with than him |
Avagantamos
05.28.22 | SGP is kind of a tricky one. I usually hesitate to seriously recommend him to anyone, as his stuff can be pretty... out there to say the least. But I'd definitely say he's the biggest trend setter in hip hop of the last 10+ years. he's pretty much the originator of that ASAP mob sound, whatever those gremlins like xxxtentacion were trying to copy, and Playboi Carti's "king vamp" schtick. He unfortunately doesn't demonstrate his full capabilities as a rapper too often, so the vocal performances can be a mixed bag, but his production never disappoints. I feel like I'm approaching rambling territory, so if you're interested in exploring his catalog, I suggest Blvcklvnd Rxdix 66.6 as a starting point

05.28.22 | Cool thanks I will. Even if I don’t end up liking it it’s always nice to glean a new bit of hip hop trivia |
Shemson
05.28.22 | Throwing this out there totally at odds with this list but when it comes to just rapping, Big Boi > Andre 3000 |
Avagantamos
05.28.22 | they're so close for me. I'm always flip flopping on which I prefer, but as for right now I think I would agree with you |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.28.22 | I’m inclined to agree as well, andre’s skillset is in his songwriting |
BillyBrill
05.28.22 | MF Doom remains the only rapper who I’ve given a perfect score to, so it’s gotta be him. That being said I do need to get into more hip hop. |
mrdogthrow
05.28.22 | Danny brown, but Denzel is a veryyy close second. |
Storm In A Teacup
05.28.22 | Yeah pots i dont want to compare them. Just wonder who else has managed to have critical acclaim like nas then 25 years later have well respected albums still. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.28.22 | Well lots have well respected albums still, whether critically or amongst the community, but I can’t think of any that dropped their classic past the 90s |
Drifter
05.28.22 | eminem? |

05.28.22 | True, Marshall matters 2000, cuttin it as close as possible lmao |
Drifter
05.28.22 | lmao ik was half joking about that one
but wouldn't mf doom count for madvillain |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.28.22 | That’s a tricky one because although he was active throughout 90s with KMD and such, he wasn’t really MF DOOM until what, ‘99 or something? Like in my mind DOOM is a quintessential 00’s Hip-Hop project, alongside Slum Village. |
Drifter
05.28.22 | look bro im playing for technicalities lmao |
Drifter
05.28.22 | well, actually i think del would count? pretty sure most people flock to deltron 3030 but actually, again, 2000 lmao |

05.28.22 | ugly mane is my favorite for extremely personal reasons so I feel like a list of my favorites does a better job explaining my tastes (not that anyone gives a shit lmao).
My favorites would be like:
1. Lil ugly mane
2. MF DOOM
3. GZA
4. Kool Keith
5. Big L
6. Uglyfrank
7. Gangsta Boo
8. Pharoahe Monch
9. KRS One
10. O.C. |

4. the game
5. bizzy bone
6. eminem
7. woodie

9. mac (not miller)
10. jay-z
think thats about right. after top 5 the ranking gets a lil shakey but yeah #roastme |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.28.22 | That’s a great too 5 Hyperion. Never heard of uglyfrank but the rest of your 10 time is great too, with a sprinkle of eclecticism in choosing gangsta boo for good measure lol |
Hyperion1001
05.28.22 | uglyfrank is another personal favorite. that first illfightyou tape is one of my all time favorites and frank is the most talented rapper there. his verse on this track is in my top 5, gun to my head I could recite every word lmao.
https://youtu.be/rpO_6Mz4yyQ
also I genuinely think boo is the most talented of the 36 crew. her verses on mystic styles are legendary. |
Drifter
05.28.22 | i like the gangsta boo inclusion too. she always killed it on the 90s albums |

05.29.22 | I think EMIM might have been genuinely upset about 34 as well
But hey
fucking do better lmao |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.29.22 | I haven't put any time into making up a top 10 fav rappers list myself but just off the cuff some of my top contenders alongside Kool Keith would be MF DOOM, Buckshot, Sadat X, KRS-One, Imani, Lil Ugly Mane, Method Man, ODB, Busta, Breeze Brewin', Vast Aire, Baatin or T3 (id have to hunker down and decide who i prefer), Chubb Rock, Masta Ace, Matter Ov Fact, Redman and Son Doobie or Tomahawk Funk (another time where its hard to decide who i like better as they just work together so well). There are a lot of others to consider as well.
For favourite producers off the cuff top contenders would be J Dilla (number one), Buckwild (number two), Prince Paul (number three), and then Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, Kutmasta Kurt, Dan the Automator, Diamond D, Premier, Prodigy and Havoc inseparably (lol), Evil Dee, Godfather Don, Madlib, DOOM again, EL-P, Fat Jon, The Beatnuts (also inseparably) |

Shemson
05.29.22 | You know what Pots, it’s not cool to say, but Busta is great, agreed |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.29.22 | Dj Paul and juicy j are kind of like “The Room” of hip hop production to me lol
@shem yeah busta is a legend. Even beyond just being one of the best on a technical level between his solo stuff and Leaders of the New School he’s got at least 3 all time classics classics imo. |
notagenius
05.29.22 | @getlow pots obviously had high expectations for this list, but we were all too rookie. lmao some of us threw him bands, pop singers and producers. We need to be understanding of his reaction to disappointments.
@pots When you decide to start a questionnaire, be true to the results. Scientific spirit. When you ask a group of people, accept everyone, the spirit of inclusion. |

05.29.22 | Drifter he doesn’t spell it that way. Or at least it isn’t spelled that way in his albums |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.29.22 | “Tha” is just a stylization he sometimes uses. Both are correct. |
Drifter
05.29.22 | https://www.discogs.com/release/216431-Del-Tha-Funkee-Homosapien-I-Wish-My-Brother-George-Was-Here
but yes his later ones are "the" |
Drifter
05.29.22 | oh and would 50 cent count for the 2000s debate. he started getting a buzz in the late 90s but didnt drop grodt til 03 |
widowslaugh123
05.29.22 | Ok but how do you explain the “Funkee”? HMMMM? I’m mostly just bitchin because I always forget how it’s spelled when I use the search bar |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.29.22 | I wouldn’t count Fiddy because he doesn’t even have any 90s albums as a reference point. I think the metric in my mind is loosely “started dropping albums in the late 80’s slash early to mid 90’s” |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.29.22 | I think “funkee” is just another stylization. I’ve seen it here and there. Del is infamously one of the laziest rappers of all time so I wouldn’t expect much in the way of consistency from him |

notagenius
05.30.22 | agreed. redman is inimitable. surprisingly no one else has mentioned him |

05.30.22 | you could almost say method man’s classic was blackout. i know you’re partial to tical pots but many aren’t and adore blackout but it is a collab so not sure it would count. obv red got a couple classics |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.30.22 | I like Tical and blackout both a lot. I’d definitely consider Blackout closer to Method Man’s peak than to Redmans tho. I’d take Redmans first three albums over Tical or Blackout any day. Love those albs |
dedex
05.30.22 | Nas |
notagenius
05.30.22 | I'd def go for Blackout. redman's rap is variable and method's is rigid. when on their own, I get tired of method man's after a while of listening because of its heavy graininess, but I never get tired of redman's. in short, I prefer method man in groups. redman is great both individually and collaboratively. |
notagenius
05.30.22 | redman's 2020 EP is also one of my favorites. I believe there's a good chance he could still make a classic piece. |
