04.21.22 | Will just keep adding to this as the collection grows (and also reduced as you can see i desperately want to dispose of some of a few of these still) |

Avagantamos
04.21.22 | maybe he means that even if we was no longer a big fan of a record he owns, he would keep hold of it because of the sentimental value. That's how I feel at least |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.21.22 | i get that. there are some of these that that applies to (We Are Rising and Alopecia specifically from this part) where I don't fucks w/them much anymore but I have a personal attachment that makes it feel dirty to think about selling them. But I've been collecting records since I was 16 and the cringe I feel for some of the earliest purchases outweighs any sentimental value they might have once had, especially when I look at what some of them are worth. Like I had a limited edition coloured copy of Tropic Rot that no one else had for sale on discogs and I quadrupled what I bought it for and bought like 4 new records that I actually currently like with that money lol.
Also now that I am an adult, although my tastes will continue to change, I feel that I have a safer approximation of the kinds of music I will enjoy for the remainder of my life, whereas I can say with near complete certainty that I will never have another metal phase. |

04.21.22 | As for my grandma's records, it was nice to have a keepsake like that from her and there were lots of gems but they largely went unappreciated by me. I played very few of them more than once. I realized hanging on to them was kind of a waste and moving them around was a pain so I finally ripped the bandaid off and started selling them. I've made about $600 off those alone, which I mostly reinvested into new records with price tags I normally couldnt stomach. That Black Moon box set and Lamb Self Titled for instance, each cost me over $100, which is a lot more than I am typically willing to spend on a record, but they are items I've always really wanted in my collection and putting record money back into records doesn't give me any buyers remorse lol. |

04.21.22 | saw 32 and was surprised…until i read the description |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.22.22 | 😂 I don’t think I even bought it. I think it was one of several records that was left behind at a house I used to live at with roommates years ago, and I absorbed them into my collection when they were never claimed. That’s how I got Donuts by J Dilla too |
DominionMM1
04.22.22 | well if it’s the 2Xlp version it’s worth a good amount |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.22.22 | Nah it’s not a shit version of Blood Mountain. Same person left behind the limited edition Option Paralysis tho which is worth a bit. And Donuts is worth over $100 |
DominionMM1
04.22.22 | also didn’t know 10 got a reissue. originals were going for crazy amounts. |
Sinternet
04.22.22 | yeah i got a fair bit of dad's friend's record collection when he passed (all 90s/early 00's house and techno stuff) and definitely passed on a lot to others either through selling some of the rarer bits or giving a few away, kept some gooduns though. i think most people would rather have that kinda stuff go to someone who's gonna make the most of it, and if you're reinvesting back into the hobby anyway its a nice ode to the gesture. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.22.22 | @dominion yeah lol that’s pretty much why I snagged it.
@sint exactly that |

04.25.22 | Didn’t manage to get the record store day Lovage pressing but hopefully when discogs floods with them the price will go down a bit |

05.01.22 | Congrats dude! We have been looking to buy our first home as well but it’s been a depressing process. If we want to stay in Van or Burnaby all we can really afford at this point is a single bedroom condo with maybe a den. And we are used to having a lot more space than that. So we decided to save another year or two until we can at least afford a two bedroom. ‘Tis absolutely fucked up here. |

and another dude is trading me Pete Rock - Soul Survivor and Gang Starr - Daily Operation for some of my grandmas old records I'm trying to get rid of |
Deez
05.20.22 | Thats a whole lotta great business right there |
notagenius
05.20.22 | you never mentioned what are the records your grandmother had |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.20.22 | Oh god so many. I’ve already probably sold about 100 and have at least 100 more. Mostly old jazz, folk, and blues. Little bit of rock. |
notagenius
05.20.22 | I might like some of your grandma's jazz records. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to collect any. Using the records she used to like to get the records you like sounds very meaningful. I think it makes much more sense than only symbolically keeping her records. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.20.22 | She had some really good stuff. My favourite was Take Five by David Brubeck Quartet. But she had lots of other classics like Miles Davis and John Coltrane as well as many great records I had never heard of. She had this album Brown Rice by Don Cherry and that was one of my favourite discoveries. But yeah, I held on to them for years and didn’t spin many of them more than once if at all, so I eventually came to terms with the fact that just sitting there collecting dust wasn’t doing anyone any good. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.20.22 | She also has several records that were signed with notes directly to her which was cool. The most notable one was a Louis Armstrong album Ambassador Sach, which was autographed by himself and the entire rest of the band. |
notagenius
05.20.22 | Oh my goodness! Maybe at least save these signed ones? You might even be able to sell them at a incredible price in case you become famous yourself. |
foxblood
05.21.22 | I have more than 500 vinyls I think, I love them so much but sometimes I wish I didn't have the compulsion to spend $60 on a new album, it's a very expensive hobby. they really get you with the limited color releases of albums that haven't been repressed in decades. still worth it in my opinion, I put records on every single day. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.21.22 | @notagenius yeah I’ll probably hang on to a few of those!
@fox id probably be at about that number too if I didn’t purge my metal records and start getting rid of grandma stuff. I feel you, it’s a painful vice for the wallet but at least it’s rewarding. Would love to see your collection if you ever decided to do a list series like this |
foxblood
05.21.22 | what metal records did you purge? I find that metal albums tend to keep their value and are really hard to find used outside of the internet so they are easy to sell.
I didn't get albums from my grandma, but in middle school I was given maybe 100 vinyls because my dad knew a guy who had a vinyl shop that shut down. that was a big thing that got me into music/vinyl and focusing on playing guitar because I was inspired by Duane Allman after being given all the records he was on. I sold a lot of that stuff years later though, it was like every ac/dc album, every beatles album, every neil diamond album, john denver etc., shit I don't really need. I might use that idea for a list actually :] |
foxblood
05.21.22 | 58 looks like a really cool vinyl I want that lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.21.22 | They’ve been by far my easiest to sell and at ridiculously great prices to boot. I made the mistake of selling the majority of them at modest prices to a friend years ago but for example I recently sold The Tropic Rot, Absolutego, and Worse Than Alone for around $120, $70, and $70 iirc. I don’t remember the bulk of the stuff I sold years ago but a lot of it was hydra head adjacent kind of stuff. Lots of coloured records. I definitely could have made a bunch more money if I held on to them and sold them on discogs now.
Man 58 was NOT cheap, but it’s a limited 300 piece run of my fav album by my fav rapper and I just had to get it before it was gone. I’m so excited. There are a bunch of other Kool Keith albums I desperately want but that was #1. Dr. Doooom debut is next |
MyNameIsPencil
05.21.22 | that purple marble denzel curry vinyl is a beauty |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.21.22 | I know it’s hot 😭 |
notagenius
05.21.22 | I still want to mention the preservation of the value of old jazz records, I don't know about the other music, but if those records are Blue Note first editions etc. they would have a very high potential market value. Even if it's not apparent yet. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.21.22 | Oh yeah I always look them up on discogs before I sell them |
notagenius
05.21.22 | If I were in your position and had a bunch of old jazz records. The repressed/reissued ones I would sell, but the original ones I would definitely keep. Don't necessarily need to listen to them, but I'll keep them well. Just for investment. Because of the history, there are many high-end collectors of jazz in Japan. |
