05.14.23 | Oh yeah baby hold my hand let’s do this together!
Find it’s been super helpful to always have something flavorful to drink at hand and easily preppable, teas, coffees, decafs for the eve, Brewdog makes a pretty solid N/A beer, eettcc..
You fucking got this, you’re doing amazing, and if you slip up and have a drink it ain’t a failure, quitting is a shifting slippery fish |
DoofDoof
05.14.23 | Took me 15 years to learn to drink, long road if you’re that sort of drinker, but hopefully you don’t have to fully quit :/ |
DadKungFu
05.14.23 | Best of luck Phero, you got this king. I've heard canned seltzer is great for filling that muscle memory side of it, lacroix etc. |
someone
05.14.23 | Gene the sort of drinker that sobers up if he waits 15 minutes between drinks, but if you feel tipsy, then wait one out. take something soft non-fizzy, eat some proteins, then wait again, then resume at lower alcohol percentages.
and never mix your menu.
don't gulp two glasses of rosé and then immediately move on to stouts, you'll not end up well |
someone
05.14.23 | "Does anyone want to go for a beer with me and talk about it?"
i'll gladly take you up on that offer, if i'm ever in the ole Englishland. or if you're ever in the ole central Euroland |
Demon of the Fall
05.14.23 | Yeah what Doof said is similar to my experience. Good luck Phero. I don’t really have any great advice apart from the ‘finding something else that makes you happy’ bollocks, which honestly, I found by chance 🤷🏻 |
budgie
05.14.23 | idk how brains work in other people but for me i have to make some effort in cultivating an identity that doesnt drink, which involves changing habits and behaviors. e.g. getting up extra early to work out and then zoning out for a while to classical music, less likely buy a bottle than if i get up late and chainsmoke for breakfast and listen to the exploited in morning traffic. gotta like chop off pieces of your metaphysical self |
someone
05.14.23 | "Took me 15 years to learn to drink"
that's another thing. we are often pressured by our peers (what's the word for it. pressure-peering?) into drinking, then people fall into a rather hedonistic relationship with alcohol (or any such substance, really, from cigarettes to mild drugs). then they view it as something immature that they need to grow up from. but it is you who is in fact too immature to drink. you need to learn how to do it.
i don't want to be getting drunk nowadays. i want to enjoy the drink.
thankfully the astronomical prices of many of my fave alcoholic beverages keep me from drinking too much |

05.14.23 | Also, stay away from craft beer. 15% stouts have an unexpected downside… |

05.14.23 | lol it's entirely serious pots but i get the concern. was a big big problem about 2 years ago as porc will know (i probably came to him first with these worries then and his advice and words back then have helped me progress to a point a TON better than it was at its worst) but man i cannot fucking drink. been to AA and bought the lot of books and have hit 2 fairly large periods (compartively) of sobriety which always end in a binge of all binging. one week sober today (after a not so pretty drunk in austin of all places) and thought 2023 sput would be a nice supportive hub for venting.
lmao zak i haven't got a coke problem, but get one pint in me and i quite quickly attain a coke problem
love u all good advice all and thank u doc i might just hit you up on that

05.14.23 | I still drink but I make it a rule to not drink at home alone anymore.
I’ve mostly replaced it with herbal teas. Chamomile specifically. It can help ease anxiety and there are brews that help with sleep too. I usually throw like four of the fuckers in a large glass with some honey and a little bit of milk. It’s delicious. |

PotsyTater
05.14.23 | Phero have you tried seeing a substance abuse counsellor? If that doesn’t help make it stick all that’s really left is rehab. People minimize the severity of alcoholism because it’s legal and not meth but for some people only the most invasive solution is going to work and that is valid and does not make you weak.
Not saying that need that as I know nothing of your situation, but if you cannot kick it and it comes to that just know you have support and empathy. |
PotsyTater
05.14.23 | “ but if someone on here tells of their meddling with gear people condone it to some degree.”
This is an entirely made up thing you invented in your mind just to whine about, name one time someone has said “fuck yeah meth/heroin addiction” on this site |
AsleepInTheBack
05.14.23 | ig it depends WHY you usually drink. i got stupid nerdy into beer/wine/whiskey, told myself i was drinking basically every day to learn more about the cool things, and only really puzzled out that my skyrocketing anxiety, sleep deprivation and headaches might be linked after i'd already turned it into an unhealthy habit. so to reduce intake, AF beer etc. has helped, as has soda water variously flavoured. still indulge in the sauce on the weekend, but only the weekend. rules help ig. i suspect cold turkey would be hard. |
Demon of the Fall
05.14.23 | I’ve trained myself to take at least 40 mins to sink a pint. That way I literally don’t ever have the time to consume more than 4/5 because life gets in the way. Speed kills (this isn’t a joke, apologies if it comes across that way… it’s also terrible ‘moderation’ advice generally, but there you go). |
Dewinged
05.15.23 | I went completely sober last December but I've never been good at drinking. Like I enjoyed craft beer a lot a few years ago, and the social aspect of sharing a beer with friends but my body just has a terrible way to deal with the aftermath, headaches especially, so I just went dry. The social side of it got lost, and I just don't go out as much as I did (shows, dining out, etc) but I do enjoy more time with the fam now and focus on things like cooking a nice and tasty meal for them.
You don't have to go full dry mode, and I think there are pretty good advices here on how to pace it all and regain control over it, so don't punish yourself too much either Phero! |
bellovddd
05.15.23 | I've just replaced alcohol with med weed and I'm 100% happier. well stoned. |
fogza
05.15.23 | Hey phero sorry to hear about your struggles. Don't have any good advice for you except maybe identifying why you drink (overcome social anxiety, using it to cope with stress etc, like the flavour or ritual of it), probably would give you a roadmap for what to tackle. I am rooting for you my friend |
Wildcardbitchesss
05.15.23 | weed makes my anxiety worse. Anything more than a quick puff and I get all paranoid.
I still have like half of an eighth I bought in Oregon… over a year ago. |
denboy
05.15.23 | What made it easy for me to keep up the non-drinking was realising how much better actually having quality sleep felt like
it did take a couple of weeks of perfect sleep to kick in
also, have a plan for all that extra time you suddenly have on sunday mornings |

05.15.23 | conquer it mentally and there's nothing that will stop u. peep some stoic writings for influence |
AsleepInTheBack
05.15.23 | yo yes the sleep is the thing!! hadn’t realised the fact I hadn’t got a good night sleep in 3 years was the sauce, you kinda forget (at least i did) that you can wake up and feel awake and good and not like shit |

05.15.23 | My brother drank himself to death. He was 33, his birthday was on the 13th. Do it for yourself, and do it for the people around you who care about you even if it doesn't seem like they do. Because when you're gone you are the only thing they are going to think about for the rest of their lives. |
MO
05.15.23 | just keep your mind occupied with hobbies, family and friends. like dewinged said, you don't have to go fully dry cold turkey. just start toning it down to the point where you can replace the last little bit of drink you would have with water or a dry cocktail or something. good luck dude m/ |
PitchforkArms
05.15.23 | Heart going out to you, Phero. I have no idea how to quell the urge to drink - but am one of the lucky ones who is not particularly destructive while drinking. I'll waste some days with hangovers, but I am usually a pretty good drunk and usually only get the urge socially.
With that being said, have you any experience with stimulants / prescribed amphetamines? I pretty recently have been prescribed Adderall for my moderately severe ADHD and when I'm regularly taking it I usually don't have much urge to drink, but that may just be due to the fact that I don't have the urge to do much other than be productive and the appetite is pretty drastically quelled. I do think, though, that the "stay occupied" approach is one that is super helpful to many - maybe it could for you as well. I know hard it is, though, to manifest motivation and actually stay occupied or to even have the thought to just do something rather than whatever brain-whim one may be on (such has having a lil drink).
Hope you're able to right the ship the way you wish and stay the course. |
anode
05.15.23 | Amphetamines nullify the effects of drinking or really any drugs in my experience. I think that’s why it discourages it at least for me |

09.23.23 | Good luck with this hard process man. In my experience the best thing is to gradually reduce your drinking habits. Trying to quit all of a sudden is hard as fuck. My goal was to get to a point of 0 alcohol, but in the process I discovered that I could be satisfied with just a couple of drinks, as opposed to the times in which I needed more and more. I guess, that the key is learning how to drink, not to be completely teetotaler. |
