| Top Ten Gy!be Songs
My top ten Godspeed You! Black Emperor songs. "Storm" just barely missed the cut,
but it's still great. | 10 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
"We Drift Like Worried Fire" - The best track from ADBA, no question. It's twenty minutes long, so
the song is split up into two parts, each ten minutes long. It feels like there's two songs in one, and
though both of the parts follow roughly the same formula, they're both different enough to provide
some variety.
BEST MOMENT: 3:07 - 8:22 | 9 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas...
"Antennas To Heaven" - The closer of LYSFLATH is one of the more ambient tracks Godspeed has
made, and it truly shows their penchant for field recordings and random samples. Opening with one
of the few times sung lyrics appear on a Godspeed record, the meat of this song is made up of a
movement called "She Dreamt She Was A Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone In An Empty
Field". A mouthful, yes, but certainly one of the best parts of this track and on the album as a
whole.
BEST MOMENT: 10:10 - 13:40 | 8 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor F#A# (Infinity)
"The Dead Flag Blues" - The opener of F#A# may have one of the greatest spoken word pieces ever
said in music, and sets the tone for the entire album. The strings that come through on this song
are heart-wrenchingly beautiful, and the atmosphere is apocalyptic as well as giving off a feeling of
isolation. That is, until the surprisingly upbeat ending movement of the song rolls around, giving off
a very hopeful vibe.
BEST MOMENT: 2:45 - 6:35 | 7 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
"Moyà" - One of only two tracks on SRFNZC, this song is an exercise in everything Godspeed does
well. Excellent build-up? Check. Sprinkles of ambience? Check. Perfect atmosphere? Check.
Wonderfully explosive crescendo? Check HARD. It may have a very standard structure for a post-
rock song, but when it sounds like this, it doesn't really matter. I believe if you're going to start
listening to Godspeed, this is the song you should check out first.
BEST MOMENT: 4:56 - 9:01 | 6 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas...
"Sleep" - Sleep was my initial favorite from LYSFLATH, and is probably the favorite of thousands of
other fans. The second movement of the song, "Monhiem", features the use of screwdriver-picked
guitars, which is a very unique touch, and makes for some of the most harrowing noises ever
created. An ever-expanding crescendo highlights this movement, but the last five minutes of the
final movement of the track is the defining moment.
BEST MOMENT: 18:20 - 22:32 | 5 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor F#A# (Infinity)
"East Hastings" - It may be Godspeed's most recognized song due to its inclusion in the acclaimed
zombie film "28 Days Later". The bulk of this track is made up of a movement known as "The Sad
Mafioso", which has one of the best build-ups they've ever written. Ethereal ambience takes up the
last five minutes of the track, and it even reprises the first song on F#A#, "The Dead Flag Blues",
with bagpipes during the beginning of the track.
BEST MOMENT: 8:49 - 12:19 | 4 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Yanqui U.X.O.
"Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls" - At first, I didn't like this track at all. I thought it was so boring and I
felt it just plodded along without really doing anything. Yet, one year changes a lot of things. It has
quite possibly my favorite section of music Godspeed has ever made, as well as a huge tension-
building middle section. Every time, I keep expecting there to be a grandiose crescendo, and it just
never comes. The anticipation is such that you could cut the air with a butter knife.
BEST MOMENT: 4:03 - 7:14 | 3 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas...
"Static" - This is another track that grew on me pretty good. It has a purely ambient movement
called "The Buildings, They Are Sleeping Now", that is in my humble opinion one of the greatest
ambient sections in music history. The heartbreaking strings in "Chart #3", and the schizophrenic
compositions of "World Police And Friendly Fire" make this track the best from LYSFLATH.
BEST MOMENT: 4:40 - 7:20 | 2 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
"Blaise Bailey Finnegan III" - The last of two tracks on SRFNZC, this track features an interview with
a political extremist who believes that the world is in such disarray that he can't even imagine what
it will look like in a few years. The piano and low strings weaving in and out of the interview give
way to a couple of massive crescendos that are among the best Godspeed has made, even when
you know they're coming.
BEST MOMENT: 11:00 - 14:45 | 1 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor F#A# (Infinity)
"Providence" - The ultimate track of F#A#, this is the pinnacle of Godspeed's work. They touch on
everything here: Expertly crafted build-ups, beautiful ambience, fitting field recordings and samples,
massive crescendos, and the greatest example of an apocalyptic atmosphere ever put to wax. No
movement in this track is as good alone as it is with each other, and there is not a single minute
over the entire thing that is put to waste. And that is even with about four minutes of silence near
the end of the track. Absolutely essential post-rock.
BEST MOMENT: All of them, but if I had to choose it would be 6:07 - 10:48 | |
BertMacklinFBI
10.18.14 | 2 is 1.
(JK, good list, but I probably would have tried to fit Storm in there somewhere) | Scoot
10.18.14 | kudos for 1
best godspeed ever is string loop manufactured during downpour | Shuyin
10.18.14 | the first 4-5 minutes on rockets fall are deff one of my favourite moments in music | YakNips
10.18.14 | 9 and 8 are 1 and 2
1 is one of the weaker gybe songs | Artuma
10.18.14 | but how | YakNips
10.18.14 | not very cohesive
some parts are really great and overall it's an amazing song but it doesn't work as well as the first two tracks on F# and is overall probably the weakest track on their first 3 releases | Phlegm
10.18.14 | need 2 check these guys some time | Artuma
10.18.14 | i love providence so much damn. antennas has to be my least fave from their first three albums. haven't jammed lysf in a long time tho | Artuma
10.18.14 | it's 1.5 hours long but yea need to rejam it soon | RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
10.18.14 | Yak why 9? not trying to be a jerk, just interested. | RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
10.18.14 | Phlegm yeah they're pretty great. slow riot is a great starting point if you need one. | YakNips
10.18.14 | well she dreamt she was a bulldozer/john hughes is easily my favorite movement of any godspeed song just because of how perfectly it flows and how beautiful the climaxes are. the intro is pretty trippy and one of the more unique and memorable bits of the album. the outro is fucking amazing, reminiscent of some of the stuff on the first ASMZ record (which is a really great thing) and perfectly ends the record. it's an all around perf song imo that i've listened to many many times | StallionMang
10.18.14 | 1 is 1 nice | RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
10.18.14 | Yak i totally agree with the ASMZ vibe. have you heard born into trouble as the sparks fly upward? great record, a 5 for me tbh | beefshoes
10.18.14 | Antennas' outro is unreal | YakNips
10.18.14 | i actually haven't, i've only heard their first and most recent. but it came out in 2001 and that's like the golden age for efrim's stuff so i'm gonna have to get that for sure | dmp3131
10.18.14 | It's hard for me to rank GY!BE songs...because they are so...connected and sensational for me. I listen to the albums in full, not usually just individual songs. But either way, I absolutely love #1, it's so perfectly eerie. | FacelessMan
10.18.14 | the ending of providence is one of the best things ive ever heard | SeaAnemone
10.18.14 | I mean not that there's anything wrong with your ranking and it's obviously thoughtful which is nice; but I would feel weird ranking "songs" with GYBE because they're pretty clearly one of the quintessential bands that mean for their shit to be processed in terms of albums | Judio!
10.18.14 | ^this
Not sure how I'd rank GY!BE songs myself. Definitely wouldn't include Static anywhere near my top 10 though. | RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
10.18.14 | i totally get what you mean Sea, and you're right, each song isn't as good when it's alone. i just thought i'd do this list because i love GY!BE so much. | SeaAnemone
10.18.14 | ye fair enough I just think it's hard to consider them outta context
personally Dead Flag Blues is my fav
but I'd also have Rocket Falls on Rocket Falls that high | Muisc4Life26
10.19.14 | Excellent list! 5 is 1 for me but i love your top 3. Good job! | UnderTheNorthernScar
10.19.14 | very nice detailed list. One of my favorite bands of all time | TheCrocodile
10.19.14 | Always liked Mladic more then We Drift..., pretty good list. | RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
10.19.14 | thanks for the feedback everyone | pedro70512
10.19.14 | Behemoth is best Godspeed
because it's the only song they played when I paid $100 to see them |
