03.01.12 | 6 should read "...but the lyrics reference Elmore Leonard and the song's damn catchy." |
americanohno
03.01.12 | Next parts in order:
Part Two: Classic Country (Pre-'65)
Part Three: Outlaw / Post-'65 Country
Part Four: Modern Country Part Two
I'd do a list on bluegrass but I just don't know enough about the genre. |
americanohno
03.01.12 | To answer questions before they're asked:
I didn't put Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell because I associate them more w. the outlaw scene of the 70s even though most of their best stuff was released in the past 20 years. Although i put Ray Wylie Hubbard on here so that's a bad excuse. Lyle Lovett will also be on the Outlaw list.
I didn't put Lucinda Williams cuz I only heard one of her songs ("Drunken Angel her tribute to Blaze Foley) but I only heard one Big Red Goad song so that's a bad excuse.
Oh my God I forgot to put Todd Snider on this list. The song I'd pick would probably be "Play a Train Song" or maybe "Beer Run"
Shit I forgot Old Crow Medicine Show which is pretty unforgivable given the near-ubiquitousness of "Wagon Wheel"
Yeah The Cowboy junkies should be on here.
Just excuse the bad spelling, grammar, sentence construction, and dicktion. i'm a terrible writer.
Yeah this is a shitty list. SavingCountryMusic.com, NoDepression.com, and NineBullets.net are better sources for this kinna shit.

03.01.12 | nice work man
i'd ask for a feature but that might be best saved for the classic/outlaw stuff |

I beat you to it I'm a self-promoting jackass.
Yeah you're message thing or whatever they call it got me to finally do this. (And KJSwanto's country list, which was, to be diplomatic I'll say, questionable.)
and yeah I decided to start w. the modern country list because for most sputnikers it would be easier to get into country thru DBT or Scott Biram than Carl Smith or Hank Snow. |
Bloodbirds
03.01.12 | @16 - I love Johnny Cash's version of the song. |
porch
03.01.12 | it was buried under a bunch of throwaway lists almost immediately anyway so probably a good idea
and yeah, just thought it'd be a nice change of pace over the usual stuff for someone to make a rough guide to this genre |
ncguitar
03.01.12 | Needs moar Taylor Swift. |
BigHans
03.01.12 | great list dude. Drive By Truckers fucking destroy |
Crumby
03.01.12 | Great list man. Not enough people on here listen to good country. I might make a bluegrass list. |
americanohno
03.01.12 | @ Crumby
you def. should the only bluegrass I really know are The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe and John Hartford. Although The .357 String band would sort of count and damn they probably should have been on this list.
@ ncguitar
I'm not sure if you're joking but if you like Taylor Swift check out Lydia Loveless who is sort of like a bizarro world Swift. She's a cute girl who's just barely past drinkin' age, has an average voice, and is just barely makin' country music (most of Loveless' songs are power pop w/ twang). But instead of Swift's singular focus on highschool/past relationships all Loveless' songs are about boozin' and snortin' coke. |
twlight
03.01.12 | this is sweet, great list |
TheFonz123
03.02.12 | I know so littel about country besides Johnny Cash thank you for doing this! |
Sowing
03.02.12 | tay swizzle
seriously though good list i would explore this if i liked country more |
KjSwantko
03.02.12 | "Yeah you're message thing or whatever they call it got me to finally do this. (And KJSwanto's country list, which was, to be diplomatic I'll say, questionable.)"
Yeah my list wasn't intended to be recommended Country, It was just a list of random artists I picked off the top of my head. Nice job here, I'll check a bunch of these out. |
americanohno
03.02.12 | Yeah Kj I had no problem your list I like Eric Church and Jamey Johnson and even though Justin Moore's "Bait a Hook" is the most hated country song to come out* since Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" (which happens to Miracles-level bad and inept) I actually liked the song. I mean I wish I didn't but i do.
It's just that your list is the kind of country music sputnik would turn their collective nose up at w/o even giving it a chance. You gotta throw the sputnik community a bone and give them country songs about snortin coke and having drunken sex to mojo nixon records. for whatever reason country is seen as un-hip 'round these parts even though there exists thriving country scenes in Portland and Austin two of the most hipster-ish cities around.
Anyway I'd recommend checkin' out Jason Boland and the Stragglers, Austin Lucas, and Hayes Carll. All make quality mainstream country music but for whatever reason just aren't popular enough to be called mainstream. Ryan Bingham's also good but since you already like Johnson I'd imagine you've heard him already. |
americanohno
03.02.12 | *Technically "Red Solo Cup" is the most hated country song to come out since Dirt Road Anthem but I wouldn't call Red Solo Cup a song. |
Canaima
03.02.12 | Good list, def gonna check these out. Interested in the other parts also. |
americanohno
03.02.12 | note:
14 should be the Truth Will Set You Free
also go ahead and rec stuff you think should be on the next lists, I have far from a complete knowledge of the genre. In fact I'm certain many users know more about classic and outlaw country than me. the alt. shit is mostly what I'm into. |
Cipieron
03.02.12 | no garth brooks, this list is terrible |
spillingmercury
03.02.12 | Glad you did this. Have to check a lot of these out. |

03.02.12 | Needs moar Taylor Swift.
No it doesn't
Needs Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd |

03.02.12 | they're more southern rock you dumb dumb |
americanohno
03.02.12 | yeah I mean you could argue Skynyrd deserves to be included in the post-65 list, but I probably wouldn't. I do plan on including a Grateful Dead album/song but I mean Jerry Garcia was a world class steel guitar player. |
deathofasalesman
03.02.12 | Well deserved featured. I'm intrigued by 2 judging from band name and art. |
KjSwantko
03.02.12 | "You gotta throw the sputnik community a bone and give them country songs about snortin coke and having drunken sex to mojo nixon records."
haha yep. Or if there was Satanic country, sputnik would be all over that. I'm excited to check these out though; good stuff brotha. |
mastille
03.02.12 | Better than Taylor Swift
Case and point: Free Birdddddd
But fine tbh I don't know country at all. Drive-by Truckers is pretty cool though, might check the others out |

03.02.12 | @ KjSwanto
Bob Wayne is as close as it comes to satanic country. Although Scott H. Biram comes pretty close. He never sings about worshiping satan but his songs are so gleefully immoral I think even the mighty Varg would blush. "Headin' down to the Dixie Queen / Pickin' up girls who was barely thirteen" is a line from one of his songs. |
ConsiderPhlebas
03.02.12 | Awesome, need more country. Only heard 1 off this list, so good. |
Shiola36
03.02.12 | If Jason Isbell gets a slot for his solo stuff Patterson Hood should be right above him for Murdering Oscar. |
rockandmetaljunkie
03.02.12 | very good list |
americanohno
03.02.12 | never listened to patterson hood's solo stuff before, I'll put him on the modern country pt. 2 list.
And Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, and Whiskeytown seemed to obvious to me but i'll try to work them in on the next one. |
Activista anti-MTV
03.02.12 | haven't listened to any of this... have to check it out! Thanks |

03.04.12 | yeah rabbit me too. I can't get "bait a hook" outta my head.

pop country is going too far, way too far.
jesus christ i don't know what else to say. |

03.05.12 | This is a really good list. There is indeed good country out there. You just have to find it--just like any other kind of music. |

03.06.12 | ctrl + f: "cyrus"
fuck this list |
Activista anti-MTV
03.06.12 | Johnny Cash is the only reason I have listened to country music up until this point... pretty important figure. Also, he doesn't tailor his music the way many other country musicians have over the years. |
Spec
06.04.12 | Uncle Tupelo would have fit nicely. |
Apollo
06.04.12 | saw this and thought Hans was back |
americanohno
06.08.12 | @ Spec
I was gonna save them for the part 3 list which I never got to. It was gonna cover 70s and 80s country.
Although Uncle Tupelo would have fit on this list I felt they would have fit better among the likes of Peter Case, Greg Brown, John Hiatt, Rank and File, and Jason and the Scorchers. |
Cygnatti
08.04.15 | wish i hadn't missed this list :/ |
theBoneyKing
08.04.15 | Seems like a good list, haven't heard a lot of it. 1 is fantastic. |
