| | The Best Of Prog Death | | 5 | | Between The Buried and Me Colors
I know what you're thinking: "BTBAM is a strictly metalcore band with no business being on this list". However, upon
closer inspection of the album and its frequent blast beats, deep guttural vocals and shredding riffage, you'll find that
death metal is as much a part of BTBAM's sound as any of their many influences. It's due in part to such a seamlessly
varied sound with elements from every genre imaginable that makes this album so golden in the progressive
community. | | 4 | | Cynic Focus
Ah what can I say about this album that hasn't already been covered thoroughly many times over? Though not
necessarily as technical or brutal as some others on this list, Cynic's "Focus" is a perfect example of their ability to
combine eerie harmonies and atmospheric passages with metal riffs and ingenious jazz-influenced solos. Also, despite
many criticisms against it, I find Masvidal's vocoder a very interesting aspect of Cynic's established sound. | | 3 | | Death The Sound of Perseverance
Any metal fan worth their salt will tell you how important Death is to the genre. With every album from "Human"
onward, Death has crossed the boundaries of experimentation and technicality, and it is with their last effort "The Sound
of Perseverance" that they finally reached the apex of their talent in songwriting and instrumental proficiency. Truly the
perfect Death album. | | 2 | | Atheist Unquestionable Presence
What do you get when you cross seemingly the two gold standard genres of music in terms of instrumentalism, Jazz and
Death Metal? Atheist's "Unquestionable Presence" of course! Aside from the band's ear-pleasing love for all things
technical, Atheist's second effort also boasts some of the best lyrics in the genre. | | 1 | | Opeth Ghost Reveries
Out of all Opeth's albums, "Ghost Reveries" may come as a shocking choice. However, as opposed to most of their
other records, "Ghost Reveries" contains the largest variety of influences from other genres, and the ENTIRE
spectrum of the band's sound, from the most brutal, to the most relaxed and spiritual, and EVERYTHING in between.
Throw in some of the most emotional melodies and vocals to be heard from the band, and you have the complete
Opeth package. And as Opeth perfectly exemplifies everything progressive death metal should be, this album should
in turn be considered the quintessential album of the genre. | |
