13 | | DJ Shadow Endtroducing.....
Another part of the Trip Hop Triforce (not exactly trip hop but sue me), which
symbolizes Link's Triforce of Courage. It's astounding how much heart and soul
was put into this, it's incredible. It's also one of the albums that made me want
to become a producer. |
12 | | Descendents Milo Goes to College
Best punk album ever |
11 | | Tool Lateralus
Do I really need to say anything about this? Every time I listen to this it's a trip |
10 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
I don't know what the words mean except being about semen, time machines,
and the most famous hide and seek champion ever, but they're catchy as hell
and the album is just lots of weird fun |
9 | | Catch 22 Keasbey Nights
I would say everything Tomas Kalnoky ever did was gold (well, everything up to
SITB anyway...) and this was no exception. A youthful explosion of ska, full of
catchy lyrics and bouncing horn patterns, that takes you on a bus trip through
the shittiest parts of New Jersey; good thing everyone on the bus is singing
along |
8 | | Madvillain Madvillainy
My favorite hip hop album ever. Madlib's production is top notch, and DOOM just
kills it. Crazy samples too. Listening to it on vinyl after a long day is always a
good time |
7 | | Panda Bear Person Pitch
I've always looked up to Noah Lennox, in a role model type of way. We both
play drums, love lush atmospheres, and love cutting up samples. Person Pitch
strikes a chord with me unlike many others. I've loved everything about this
album from the get go: the undecipherable sounds rolling underneath the mix,
the hazy vocal layers, and the catchy songwriting all caught me on first listen.
The album also contains some of my favorite samples; from the "I think it's a
skateboard" at the beginning of Take Pills, the chordal guitar pattern that
strums along the second half of Bros, and the frantic percussion pattern that
scares you shitless when Good Girl starts because you're too baked. The second
half of the album has some of my favorite atmospheric tracks ever. The album
feels like a dream where you're floating through the ocean, and looking at all
the beautiful colors of fish and coral. Oh, and WHALES. But yeah, this album is
hella sweet |
6 | | Massive Attack Mezzanine
Long before the formation of the now infamous Mezz Crew, I discovered this
album while scouring Sputnik just about when I first joined. As a pillar of my
"Trip-Hop Triforce" (Trademark pending), this album sits at the top, as a
replacement for Ganondorf's Triforce of Power. The album is just dirty, as gritty
and dark as the Bristol streets from whence it spawned. Like a dark and gritty
noir film, the album bleeds sex, murder, and greed. Every track is phenomenal,
between how "Inertia Creeps" emerges from a murky swamp, or "Dissolved
Girl's"' blurry memory of a gritty warehouse club. Mezzanine is a monster, one
that boasts crushing drum samples, hazy vocals, and mysterious synth lines.
It's not hard to see why Sputnik's most notorious pack takes their name from
it. |
5 | | American Football American Football
Strangely enough, this was the album that got me into emo, but only after
checking it out after I heard Highly Refined Pirates by Minus the Bear. AF's only
album is a wonderful mix of mathy drum beats, spinning delayed out tapping
riffs, rockout jam sections, and Mike K's oh-so-heartwrenching croons. The
album is gorgeous, and never fails to bring even a single tear to your eye. Every
song is perfectly fleshed out, and full of brilliant melodies that flitter by. Still to
this day it's my favorite Kinsella family related project. Twinkle on, daddies |
4 | | Radiohead Kid A
Man, the had the hardest time getting into Radiohead. A few years back, I was
put off listening to them because I had some silly grudge against "pretentious"
music. After seeing Kid A's deep love for the album, I tried it out. Unfortunately,
I never liked it. That was until my buddy told me to give them another shot. I
was hanging at his apartment one night, and after smoking some bud, decided
to watch The Blair Witch Project. For whatever reason, my altered state of mind
decided that I would put Kid A on during the movie. Now, I can't tell you
whether The Blair Witch Project was good, or even what it was about. What I
can tell you is that Kid A is a fucking mind blowing masterpiece of an album.
Between Jonny G's newfound love for analog synth pads or sequenced drum
patterns, Thom's dreamy as ever vocals, or just when the band just decides to
rock the hell out, Kid A is always exciting to listen to. I still treat that one night
as a near religious experience, and Kid A is now one of my favorite albums ever. |
3 | | Boards of Canada Geogaddi
Geogaddi is a numbing journey into the deepest depths of your subconscious,
where you encounter the darkest and most buried shit in your mind. Analog
pads create a hazy fog of sound while booming beats thunder around your ears. Indecipherable vocals enter the void, only to add unease to the listener. Despite
this, the album is mostly pretty relaxed, but never calming. Despite the
laidback, ambient textures, you can't help but feel a sinister aura that fills the
air. I also believe BoC were attacked by a demon (a la Tenacious D) while
recording it, and they managed to seal it into the saturated tapes the album
was recorded onto. When the album isn't sending shivers down your spine, it's
lulling you with some of the most gorgeous soundscapes ever produced. Leslie
Nielsen's appearance is also a highlight. |
2 | | Weezer Pinkerton
Another flawless album. This one hits hard with me on a personal level, probably
due to my extreme feelings of sexual frustration. Rivers' lays it all out on
Pinkerton, and that makes it one of the most personable albums ever. "Across
the Sea" to "Pink Triangle" is probably the greatest run of songs ever, and hell,
"El Scorcho" just might be my favorite song of all time (and not just because
the Neon Genesis Evangelion references in the first four lines of the song). The
album itself is loud and pushy, but somber and quiet when it needs to be.
Singing every word on the album straight through is one of the greatest feelings
ever. |
1 | | Streetlight Manifesto Everything Goes Numb
Well, here it is: my favorite album of all time. Everything about it is perfect. This
album symbolizes the point in my life where I started looking for my own music
to listen to rather than the radio or what my friends liked. Back in the day I
found this through a shitty P2P program called Soulseek while redownloading
Keasbey Nights. The lyrics are phenomenal, and damn can Tomas talk/ramble
fast! Whether he's singing about suicide or robbing a bank, you always feel the
need to sing along at the top of your lungs. The musical sections, too, are
flawless, with every member playing their hearts out to the best of their ability.
The album has plenty of charm, from it's "less than great but fits so well"
production, to endless "nanana's" and "heys," and even to a punked out
rendition of Brahms' Hungarian Dance #5. This album has stuck with me for
over seven years, and I don't see it leaving this spot anytime soon.
and c'mon, the whistling in the chorus of "Better Place" is seriously like the best
thing ever! |
