Cells
12.25.11 | What a good list. |
Inveigh
12.25.11 | Dante if you liked Domo's release this year then definitely check out that Dela album. shit rules, and is similarly jazzy. definitely like Elzhi too, he's always good on Little Brother-affiliated releases too.
thanks Cells. |
cvlts
12.25.11 | didn't know they put elmatic on a vinyl release, so swooped it up when I saw it. Dela looks like something id be into. you check out that Nujabes yet? |
Inveigh
12.25.11 | shit, no I didn't... gonna get it right now though. |
FromDaHood
12.25.11 | I really didn't like this year's hip-hop that much. ASAP was the only one that really stood out to me, although I never did get around to listening to Big KRIT |
Inveigh
12.25.11 | I listened to that ASAP disc earlier. definitely cool, but probably wouldn't have cracked my top 10 even if I'd listened to it earlier. |
FromDaHood
12.25.11 | He's not really my style but the production is just so good and he's pretty talented. |
Recspecs

12.26.11 | No tech? |
Inveigh
12.26.11 | Tech N9ne 6's and 7's was on here at one point but when I was making it realized I needed to put some other stuff on. Must have forgotten it in my "honorable mentions" comment.
thanks Dev, you'll always be my OG sputnik homie
Hep - which albums are you referring to? I know you were big on Coolroy, which I thought was ok but it never really grabbed me. anything else I missed?
Goblin was one of those albums I wasn't really a big fan of but thought it was important to include because it's going to be one of the hip hop albums 2011 is remembered for, so if you're looking for a picture of what was both good AND important in 2011 for rap, I tried to make this list a good reference point. |
Inveigh
12.26.11 | really outside of the top 10 this is very loosely ranked.
I am digging that ASAP disc a little more now. Like most have said, it's more about the beats than the raps. |
gervin
12.26.11 | Epidemic--Illin Spree
Rashad and Confidence--The Element of Surprise
Doc Singe--Kiss Of The Beat
Top three for me. I like your list. I really love 5 and 7 |
Inveigh
12.26.11 | ^haven't heard a single one of those. will have to check them out though. |
Deviant.
12.26.11 | Well of course I'd feature a list that had Dela on it haha |
Urinetrouble
12.26.11 | main attrakionz blake come on |
gervin
12.26.11 | @Inveigh If you like a mid-90s east-coast feel then you should love those three albums |
gabethepiratesquid
12.26.11 | there's no Lil B so this list sucks.
also, one of my favorite hip-hop releases this year is frankenstein . - rappin ass nigga .
just this cool, lo-fi hilarious mixtape and the guy can seriously spit, obvious southern influence even though the kid is from California.

I'll hit up that Frankenstein and Main Attrakionz ish |
iFghtffyrdmns
12.26.11 | Inveigh, sir, I trust that this is indeed a good and reputable list. However, 25 is all I've heard from it, and while I do find it to be a generally appealing record, I have very little drive or desire to hear any of the remaining 24 records. Just so you know. Okay. |
Inveigh
12.26.11 | huh you could've read the description and thread and avoided having to write that entire comment |
iFghtffyrdmns

Inveigh
12.27.11 | whoa acad you haven't heard 3? get on that asap doggie
only listened to Bad Meets Evil once, for some reason never had the desire to go back to it. I'm not the biggest Em fan post-MMLP, but I do love me some Royce. |
BigHans
12.27.11 | North Korean BBQ must have really grown off you. Great list. Surprised to see Phonte #1 considering how nuts you went over Raekwon when it came out. |
Inveigh
12.27.11 | yeah it was a tough call between Rae and Phonte -- and maybe it's because Phonte's just newer/fresher right now. idk though, the lyricism on Charity Starts at Home is just so ridiculous.
NKBBQ definitely grew off, but that might have something to do with other things Mac Lethal's been doing lately (shitty interviews with Ryan Seacrest, three shitty leaked songs from Irish Goodbyes). It seems like he's trying to appeal exclusively to high school emo kids and lame frat boys now, which is a complete 180 from what he was like when I first started listening to him. |
BigHans
12.27.11 | Yeah I understand. Im listening to the song Jake and Olive off Irish Goodbyes right now. Its sappy, even for Mac. I mean its not bad or anything.. |
Inveigh
12.27.11 | yeah I guess they're not really terrible, but they're super sappy/cheesy. it just doesn't really sound like the same dude anymore. |
BigHans
12.27.11 | yeah he actually sounds, gasp, happy. |
Inveigh
12.27.11 | lol |
Counterfeit
12.27.11 | cook with me now

12.27.11 | if the rerelease for mellowhype didnt take some of the best songs off id def have that on my list |
BigHans
12.27.11 | I see his Facebook page friends total has jumped enormousy lately |
Inveigh
12.27.11 | yeah MellowHype made my list last year so I didn't feel it necessary to include them again. and like you said, the rerelease sucked a lot of the awesome out of that album. |
Counterfeit
12.27.11 | didnt even see it |

06.25.14 | Nessasary bump
2011 was an amazing year for hip hop |
Inveigh
07.02.14 | hell yeah man, although I'd order this list differently if I was to redo it today (Danny Brown and Random Axe higher, Astronote lower, etc) |
Greyvy
07.02.14 | haven't heard 2 in since like 2011, i loved it though. need to hear it soon. |
Phlegm
07.02.14 | dammn palaces higher too yo!
what are your guys hip hop highlights so far this yearrrr? |
Inveigh
07.02.14 | damn I left A$AP Rocky, Blu and J. Cole off this list...
and fuck yeah dude that Raekwon record rules hard |
Inveigh
07.02.14 | hip hop in 2014 has been pretty lackluster so far for me... honestly my favorites so far are probably Gibbs/Madlib and the new Rick Ross lol |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
07.03.14 | forgot death grips |
Inveigh
07.03.14 | death grips blow dicks |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
07.03.14 | ya don't discriminate |
Inveigh
07.03.14 | ok sorry
*death grips make shitty music
: ) |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
07.03.14 | well you included the roots so |
Inveigh
07.03.14 | lol fair enough, but at least I disclaimed that the records at the bottom weren't things i necessarily liked all that much, more just semi-important releases of the year. although i'm still not sure i should've included undun... |
