07.25.11 | These bassists rock my proverbial socks. Cause I'm barefoot. In the middle of winter. |
Ovrot
07.25.11 | i usually don't use pedals but when i do i use guitar pedals or distortion or wah |
Butkuiss
07.25.11 | My only problem with using guitar pedals on my bass is that they tend to cut out a lot of the low end, which makes it a little more difficult to fill in space within the mix and stand out from the guitars and keys, even moreso now that my band, through an odd twist of circumstance, actually has two active bass players.
And I've heard of oxycontin, but never much tried or checked them out. Will do. Thanks for the heads up. |
Ovrot
07.25.11 | do you use a bass amp or guitar amp? |
Butkuiss
07.25.11 | Bass amp. The degree in which they affect it varies; something like a guitar delay will only take off a bit of the low end, whereas a guitar distortion, say, will take out heaps. I don't really have many guitar pedals lying about since I'm not a guitarist though, so I'm just speaking anecdotally and qualitatively. |
Ovrot
07.25.11 | just make everything you do sound like kyuss |
Butkuiss
07.25.11 | That's the exact same advice my old history teacher gave me when he found out I was in a band. |
Ovrot
07.25.11 | it's good advice |
Blackbelt54
07.25.11 | I don't use pedals or effects |
Mordecai.
07.25.11 | "Chi Cheng-Filter (very very questionable. Thoughts on this?)"
what here is questionable, sorry? |
Butkuiss
07.25.11 | @ Mordy
Whether or not to get a filter pedal/effect. Chi or the tones themselves aren't questionable. Sorry, my bad. :L |
Mordecai.
07.25.11 | oh ok. well, personally I think it's a great idea for a bass player to have a filter pedal if they are trying to achieve any sort of impressive effects. It's especially suiting for prog music but can sound badass in most genres when used in combination with other pedals. |
SCREAMorphine
07.25.11 | Bass pedals are awesome, I've only used fuzz but it rocks, adds another dimention to any song
seriously get some |
SCREAMorphine
07.25.11 | Oh yeah and I wouldn't use a guitar pedal with bass, wrong frequencies get picked up or something |
Butkuiss
07.25.11 | Ahhk, awesome advice. I think I'll start experimenting with it soon.
@Scream, yeah, but there aren't any delays specially made for bass I've come across yet. Regardless, I guess I'll have to use a regular one for that. |
Trebor.
07.25.11 | I just use distortion occasionally
|
Butkuiss
07.25.11 | My only gripe with distortion on bass is that it ends up blending a lot with the guitars, a problem I think using overdrive tends to fix a little. But that's just personal preference. |
Butkuiss
07.25.11 | Thought it was the band SunnO))) for a sec. Got excited. |

07.26.11 | So here's my narrowed down list of pedals I'm considering getting over the next year. Any feedback?
Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive
Boss DD-3 Delay (Unsure about this one, seeing as it's a guitar pedal, but Jeff Caxide from Isis uses a Boss guitar delay pedal on his bass and it sounds alright. Thoughts? No dedicated bass delays. ): )
Boss GEB-3 Bass EQ Pedal
Boss SYB-3 Bass Synth
Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus
Boss AW-3 Bass Wah |
Ovrot
07.26.11 | get the bass wah |
eternium
07.26.11 | Boss pedals are the shit. Just get a nice distortion that'll add a mean crunch. Or get the Boss HM-2 and make your bass sound like Satan (Dead in the Dirt does this). A delay and chorus would be cool too, maybe even a reverb if you wanted to experiment. An EQ is optional depending on how specific you want to be with your tone but usually a good amp will do the trick. |
BurningApollo
07.28.11 | I have found that the kind of strings greatly effects the sound of your bass. Not as much as some pedals, but it can get you that much closer to the sound that your looking for. |
76TVs
07.28.11 | I like the SYB-5 by Boss. Or check out the Bass Synth Wah by Digitech.
Also check out the WMD Geiger Counter if your looking for some abnormal sounds. |
Butkuiss
07.29.11 | WMD Geiger Counter? Shit, sounds sci-fi. I'll definitely check it out. Is the Bass Synth Wah just a pure wah, or does it have synth functionality too? What's it like in comparison to the SYB-5?
@BurningApollo: Yeah, I know. I need to change my strings; their tone consistency is dead since I haven't changed them since November, unfortunately. Right now I've got D'Addarios on (Came with my Warwick Corvette); before that I've just used Ernie Balls. I really want to try some Rotosounds, but not many stores I know carry them. |
76TVs
07.31.11 | I think the Bass Synth Wah and the SYB-5 are pretty similar in performance but the Digitech is cheaper. |
