| 2010 Gigs
This year was defined as much by the gigs I couldn't see (Muse, Porcupine Tree, High On Fire/Kylesa/Torche) as the ones I did. Only able to squeeze in 5 shows this year, but they were great. | 1 | Between the Buried and Me
Venue: The Majestic Theater, Detroit
Openers: Cynic, The Devin Townsend Project, Scale the Summit
Devin was a tremendous entertainer, Cynic were a little disappointing as the only Focus song they played was Celestial Voyage and they didn't seem that into it. BtBaM were tight as hell.
Highlights: Ants of the Sky, Alaska, Supercrush!, The Great Plains, Integral Birth | 2 | Eric Clapton
Venue: DTE Energy Music Theater, Clarkston MI
Opener: Daltrey
Honestly I thought Roger Daltrey was better than Clapton. I was very surprised by the energy and quality of his performance. Eric was solid, but he was the only guitarist and therefore didn't play the best Derek and the Dominos songs (e.g. Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?, Layla electric)
Highlights: The Real Me, Going Mobile (Simon Townshend on vocals), Badge, Tell the Truth | 3 | Iron Maiden
Venue: DTE
Opener: Dream Theater
This was possibly the best show I've ever been to. It's absolutely astonishing to see Maiden live, even though I only knew a few songs because they stuck to mostly post-Blaze Bayley material. If I can be half as cool as Bruce Dickinson at his age I will die extremely happy. Dream Theater were solid as well.
Highlights: The Wicker Man, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Dance of Death, Panic Attack | 4 | Cynic
Venue: The Magic Stick, Detroit
Openers: Intronaut, Dysrhythmia
Cynic were a lot better this time. They played with much more of a purpose and their setlist included Focus in its entirety. Intronaut absolutely crush live, and were a highlight on their own. I don't know anything about Dysrhythmia but they were fun live.
Highlights: Focus all the way through, The Literal Black Cloud, Elegy, Australopithecus | 5 | Foxy Shazam and Rhymefest
Venue: The residential quad of my college
Openers: Some acts from my school.
This was a free show put on by my school's activities committee, and it rocked. Rhymefest was up first, and I had never been to a rap show or listened to his music, so I was surprised at how fun it was. A lot of energy from him. Then of course, Foxy came on and blew me away. I don't really care for their new album and they didn't play anything from the Flamingo Trigger, but what performers they (especially Nally) are. I was right up front too. A shame they only played an hour.
Highlights: The Rocketeer, Unstoppable, Introducing Foxy, Bullet and a Target | |

12.22.10 | "Only 5 shows?!?!"
I missed a lot for various reasons. Being in college in rural Ohio also makes seeing bands ten times harder. High On Fire, Kylesa and Torche came to Detroit the night before I left for break, and then played Cleveland the night I got home. I skipped out on Blind Guardian at the end of Thanksgiving Break because I wanted to spend time with my family and I was exhausted.
I also don't know many people on campus with similar musical taste to myself. | HalfManHalfAmazing
12.23.10 | Rhymefest ftw |
