02.10.10 | depends what you will be using the computer for? I would invest in more memory in anything |
cirq
02.10.10 | theres 2gb more memory and 90gb more in the hard drive. |
Masochist
02.10.10 | Also depends on the other upgrades you get for that extra $500...larger hard drive? More RAM? Better grafix card? Something else has to be going on to warrant that extra $500 than simply an increase in processor speed... |
qwe3
02.10.10 | it doesn't make that much of a difference. what you should be looking at is good graphics cards |
cirq
02.10.10 | im pretty much a retard when it comes to computers. so i dont know what that shit means..
im gonna use the computer for writing papers, music (recording and listening), internet and probably pics/videos. |
WhiteWallStargazers
02.10.10 | for recording get more memory. . have at least 4 gigs. . if not 6 |

02.10.10 | No, just overclock the 2.26 to compensate or get more RAM. |
Masochist
02.10.10 | Right then...Computers for Ruhtards:
The bigger the Hard Drive, the more stuff you can store on your computer. Most computers nowadays come with somewhere between 400 - 1024 GB of Hard Drive space. That's quite a bit, but yes, you can fill that up pretty quickly with music (especially if you're recording). For example, my music files alone take up 50 GB of Hard drive space. Most PC games nowadays are in the neighborhood of 15-20 GB each...it goes quickly (I've got 6 GB left out of 400).
RAM basically dictates how well your computer runs. The more RAM you have, the more programs you can have open at the same time. With more RAM, your computer will also have a better time running "heavy" programs such as games, graphic editors and music players/recorders. It'll probably come with at least 3 GB of RAM; you can upgrade to more once you buy it.
Graphics Card obviously dictates how well games and graphics-heavy programs (such as Photoshop or 3D modeling software) will run. If you're buying a computer from a retailer, it probably won't have a good enough graphics card for any of that heavy-hitting stuff anyways, but you might not need a big advanced one (the popular ones really start at $150).
Processor determines how fast your computer runs. Larger the number, the faster it runs. 2.53 vs 2.26 Ghz isn't all that much of a difference, but it is a difference none the less (albeit not a $500 one). The brand of processor, how many cores it has (dual core or quad core or multi-core), and the speed (the Ghz) all come into play when determining how well a Processor works.
With all that being said...given the differences you've stated so far, I (personally) still don't think the difference is worth $500 (you can spend less than $100 adding 2GB of RAM to your computer if need be). What else is better about the more expensive computer? Does it come with a larger monitor? Better keyboards? Liquid cooling system? |
Masochist
02.10.10 | (I realize that most of that is pretty basic stuff, but yeah...just covering bases). |
Masochist
02.10.10 | (Hahaha...that's also basically most of what I know about how computers work. As a disclaimer, take it with a grain of salt...) |
Zoo
02.10.10 | It can be a lot cheaper to build your own. I know you said you didn't know much about computers, but it's really not that difficult. |
cirq
02.10.10 | thank you masochist. i will be shelling out that extra $400 (i got the price wrong) for the bigger mac |
Prophet178
02.10.10 | Oh it's a Mac? Absolutely do not get the faster processor then if that's the only difference. |
cirq
02.10.10 | shit, my bad.. i thought i wrote that haha
its a macbook pro.
the bigger one has 2 more gbs of memory and the hard drive is 90gbs larger too. |
Prophet178
02.10.10 | Ah yeah, worth it then. Memory is the most important asset to a laptop. Having a bunch of space is nice too. |
qwe3
02.10.10 | yeah dont get more processor power. go for a better graphics card and more RAM |
RedSky
02.10.10 | Just pointing out that Macs are still terribly overpriced and you would be well advised to get a PC and save a ton of money.
The most hilarious is how much they rip you off on marginal upgrades like a tiny bit more hard drive space, a stick of RAM and a slightly faster CPU. In reality that kind of upgrade is about a $150 price difference but they gouge you for some ridiculous amount because they expect their users to not know how much these components actually cost. Same thing with their iPhone, iPad pricing. Charging $100 more for 16GB more flash space is HILARIOUS.
For your purposes, you could easily get a $1000 laptop and you would not notice the difference with anything more expensive. Anything above that is really only going to be noticeable in games. For that matter, look into a Dell Studio XPS line of laptops or an ASUS laptop in that price range, guaranteed to get you a better deal than being ripped off by Apple. |
bloc
02.10.10 | If that is absolutely the only difference between the two comps, go for the 2.26'er. |
KILL
02.10.10 | go for a pc, macs are rip offs |

02.10.10 | best computer i've ever had was a mac. powerbook g4.
also most expensive, just sayin |
qwe3
02.10.10 | yeah theres no denying price. but hey if you have the money and you want to do things a mac is suited for get a mac. also for laptops theyre great. the trackpad is so fucking useful |
RedSky
02.10.10 | Yeah I've been hearing Dell have been going down the tubes lately. Apparently the tech support they have isn't particular knowledgeable. Their Studio XPS do have very good LCD screens though, and on the whole I doubt they're really any worse or better than any other laptop makers.
Hey qwe, what is it about your Mac that a PC can't do? I don't do any graphic design/video editing but I have heard they do this better. If you don't use it for anything like that though, what's the point? |
qwe3
02.10.10 | The program i write music with, Finale, is much better on Mac than on PC. as you said the video and graphics programs are better on mac too, but i haven't explored those fully yet. i will for university though.
I also prefer the operating system and the simple way everything is laid out. there's also the little things like how music automatically consolidates into one location and so forth.
that's not to say i don't like PCs. If I ever want to start gaming more heavily I'll look at PCs, but right now i like my macbook. |
