12.29.09 | dunno why stupid album art won't come up for 9....
notice that I only consider the first Deftones album to be nu metal.. and I had to repeat a couple bands because I couldn't think of other nu metal albums I liked haha.. |
intothepit83
12.29.09 | this is the best nu-metal list i've seen so far..... and the only taproot album i enjoy.... good call! |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | yeah man, I used to love Gift. Don't know why they started sucking so bad after that, but twas the fate of most nu metal bands. |
NebSnurb
12.29.09 | Incubus? Nu metal? |
Fuff24
12.29.09 | I dont consider 7 nu metal but good list all the same |
Burn2Burn
12.29.09 | LD50? |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | eh, Incubus is kinda like Deftones in regards to their nu-metalness to me. Their first album or two were nu metal then they went in a different direction. The dredd locks, baggy pants, rapped verses/sung choruses with an overabundance of choppy power chords makes S.C.I.E.N.C.E. nu metal to me. Not nearly as much as the rest of this list, but I wouldn't know what else to call it. Plus, all these bands toured together and were part of the nu metal scene (Ozzfest, Family Values, etc.) |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | fuck yea Burn2Burn -- that's what I forgot!!! |
PayneTiger777
12.29.09 | Yaaaah for Sevendust! They are on here twice which means they are the best Nu-Metal band :D |
WatchItExplode
12.29.09 | limp bizkit but no Korn...then add incubus...and two sevendust albums, whatevs, it is a nu metal list |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | well, as long as we're not counting Deftones as a "nu metal band" then yes, I would say Sevendust is the best of the crop. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | eh, took out the l.i.m.p. and added some Mudvayne. And no, I don't really care for Korn. |
WatchItExplode
12.29.09 | deftones is #1 on this list??? |
Emim
12.29.09 | 4, 7 and 10 I wouldn't call Nu Metal, but decent list all the same. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | meh, I figured if you were releasing alt/metal albums with talking/rapping and downtuned power chords while playing Ibanez/PRS guitars and wearing baggy pants (and at least one member of your band had something braided/dredded) then you were a nu metal band. Also, if you appeared on Ozzfest, Family Values or Anger Management tours between 1996-2000 and had Korn kids listening to your albums then you are nu metal. Again, I don't think Incubus, Deftones or SoaD stayed nu metal after the albums listed, but that they were certainly part of the scene.
It's kind of like calling Lamb of God or God Forbid metalcore. Yeah, not a whole lot of 'core in the equation, but they're guilty by association. |
Fuff24
12.29.09 | 7 is nu metal if you define nu metal as metal with hip hop and funk flavor, but nu-metal to me is something else, a personality of the music |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | I consider all that late 90s rap/funk/hip hop/alternative metal to be nu metal. It was more of a scene than a sound, and all these bands were part of the scene. |
Fuff24
12.29.09 | so are sublime, chili pepps, RATM , and 311 part of that scene, cuz they all have that sound |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | well, RATM yes. 311, yes. Chili Pepps and Sublime were the ones who influenced that scene (along with Faith No More) and Sublime wasn't even around by the late 90s, so I would say no to them. There's not much metal about Sublime or the Chili Peppers, funk/hip hop yes, but metal no. |
intothepit83
12.29.09 | tbh, i dont think you can categorize incubus in the nu-metal genre at all, especially S.c.i.e.n.c.e. Granted, they had the look and feel of a nu-metal band, but the music had very lil nu-metal influence in it |
somberlain
12.29.09 | I remember I couldn't stop listening to 6
those SOAD albums still rule though |
intothepit83
12.29.09 | lol, when infest came out, i thought i'd found my life story! how sad! |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | I can defniitely see why you wouldn't categorize s.c.i.e.n.c.e. as nu metal, but to me it was a part of that scene and the albums I was listening to at that time (when I was 14-16). The first concert I ever went to was Deftones (touring for White Pony), Incubus (touring for Make Yourself) and Taproot (touring for Gift) and it was incredible. All of the rapping, baggy pants and power chords makes me associate them with the rest of these albums. But I can see how one might put them more in line with Faith No More, 311, Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, etc.. |
Fuff24
12.29.09 | Well the peppers had a metal sound earlier in heir career, (with Uplift Mofo and Mother's Milk) but I guess you could say they're more of the godfathers than participants, along with sublime, Faith no more and Fishbone |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | oh man, I listened to Infest like non-stop when it came out during my freshman year. BORN WITH NO SOUL, LACK OF CONTROL, CUT FROM THE MOLD OF THE ANTI-SOCIAL! |
intothepit83
12.29.09 | pardon me while i burst
into flames
i've had enough of the world
and it's people's mindless games
so pardon me while i burn
and rise above the flames
pardon me, pardon me |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | I'll go with that Fuff, and I can definitely see putting Incubus more in that vein than nu-metal. They just represent that time in my life where all I listened to were bands like this (and Incubus was one of them). |
intothepit83
12.29.09 | i know pardon me's not on science but now i have it in my head |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | I actually think Make Yourself MIGHT be the stronger album, but it's too alternative-y or something for me to call it nu metal. The Warmth is a fantastic song. Along with Clean. |
somberlain
12.29.09 | "when infest came out, i thought i'd found my life story!"
Same here! kinda embarrassing now isn't it? |
intothepit83
12.29.09 | actually, it's really embarrassing |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | I like some Chevelle, although I don't consider them nu metal. They're more just hard rock to me. I thought Wonder What's Next was pretty good though. |
somberlain
12.29.09 | Yeah I know, just trying to be nice with the "kinda" |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | hah, I don't know too many kids who didn't find at least ONE nu metal album they totally identified with or thought was their life story. Mine was probably Infest, Hybrid Theory or Dysfunction. I was a depressed little teenager. |
somberlain
12.29.09 | mine were Infest and Hybrid Theory |
intothepit83
12.29.09 | hmmmm, mine was l.d.50 and sevendust |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | oh i definitely liked those albums better, especially with time, but just didn't identify with the lyrics as much. |
Emim
12.29.09 | I'd say that Wonder What's Next - Chevelle was def closer to Alt Metal/Nu Metal than Hard Rock. I think Alt Metal fits better imo. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | I'll go with alt/metal, although much heavier on the alt than the metal imo |
Emim
12.29.09 | I think the guitars are what gives it the Nu feel. Pete switched to more Hard Rock on the later albums. |
TheSorrow805
12.29.09 | I love this list still a huge fan of the Deftones my favorite band of all time to be exact still listen to SOAD every now and then Infest was the only Papa Roach album I liked still do but its been awhile since I've listened to some of the songs Gift is Taproot's best album in my opinion only band I never listened to on this list was Sevendust just couldn't get into them |
Relinquished
12.29.09 | You can't deny that some tracks off of Around the Fur were nu-metal. Headup, anyone? |
Relinquished
12.29.09 | Oh and great list even though I never liked 3, 6, and 8 even in my nu-metal days. 2, 4, 5, and 9 were my faves back then. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | True, true, Around the Fur was still pretty "nu." I could easily put that on here instead of Toxicity, but meh. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | Um, Sevendust is awesome. I really can't think of one other band that really sounds like them, so I'm not sure how they're generic. I mean, if you only look at Seasons and Chapter VII then yeah, maybe generic, but self-titled through Animosity (and fuck, even Alpha) are all pretty awesome for nu metal albums. Home is amazing, have you ever listened to it? |
PayneTiger777
12.29.09 | Sevendust is, and always will be my favorite band. Lajon has an awesome voice and they are always consistent with their albums. Sadly, I have never seen them live, but I hear they put on a helluva show. I'm happy that Clint is back with band. |
Inveigh
12.29.09 | oh man, I've seen them live 5 times! I grew up in Atlanta, so I used to see them a lot. The first time I saw them was in late 1996 and they were still called Crawlspace (before they changed their name). Cool shit.
I love all of their albums but Seasons, Next and Chapter VII; although Seasons and Next still had a number of really good songs on each. |
FlyLordz
01.18.10 | where is the lb? Sevendust is really too! Good List! |
Ryce
03.04.10 | I agree with this list; ten albums that are very good for what they are. |
Emim
03.04.10 | Needs more Nonpoint. |
breakingb19
05.29.10 | i agree that this list does need some nonpoint, but sevendust is by far the best band on here
|
Counterfeit
05.29.10 | Sevendust over SoaD and Deftones? Don't be silly
gettin' jiggy wit it.
but seriously, no. |
