12.27.09 | Some really good stuff on here especially 1 and 26. |
tombits
12.27.09 | Disclaimer: I'm aware this is mostly contemporary stuff, and I am equally aware I didn't put Emery on this list. |
AnotherBrick
12.27.09 | 7 is hardcore??? and looks like ill stay away from this genre as well...heard some of the stuff on here and couldnt stand it...maybe someday |
couldwinarabbit
12.27.09 | so say I go along with you making up genre names wtf is post-hardcore. I'm assuming it's a mix of hardcorepunk and post rock (post rock is a stupid genre names too). So I'm picturing a mix of bad brains and Sigur Ros that right? |
robertsona
12.27.09 | no it's the next step after hardcore punk, i guess a more accessible version
but he's not making 'post-hardcore' up, wtf that's a pretty heavily used term |
tombits
12.28.09 | Post-hardcore is a pretty broad umbrella in terms of style. I mean, it spans from super-aggressive Refused to the more experimental, slower mewithoutYou to the mathy-rock goodness of Tera Melos. It generally retains some of the screaming from hardcore, but it's mixed in with a lot more clean singing and a whole lot of progression in terms of the music itself. |

12.28.09 | Does the music have to be based in Rock music or Punk music? |
tombits
12.28.09 | Typically speaking, it branches from punk, although you can get weird hybrids like in any genre. As a starting point, pick up At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command. It's considered a super influential classic inside the genre. |
Dreamsoffew
12.28.09 | Why has hardly anyone on this site heard of Boysetsfire? Nearly all of their albums would knock over half of these, which are still good by the way. |
couldwinarabbit
12.28.09 | no I've heard some of these (didn't enjoy them an exuberant amount) so how does it differ from Post-punk? |
tombits
12.28.09 | Post-punk tends to be a lot less aggressive and lacks the harcore element that post-hardcore retains. I'm not really clear on the history of the two or anything, but i'm pretty sure they were two completely different movements too, with a decade or more between them.
Not a huge boysetsfire fan, I usually just go to Refused. |
Dreamsoffew
12.28.09 | Have ya heard much of them Tombits? |
couldwinarabbit
12.28.09 | So a louder angry version of Slint or Joy Division (which makes no sense as post punk cause it came out at the same time, if not before London Calling) |
tombits
12.28.09 | Just bits and pieces from After the Eulogy. They tend to delve a bit too far into metal for my tastes. |
Powerban
12.28.09 | No Hopesfall. =( |
tombits
12.28.09 | Definitely the next band i'll check out! |
Dreamsoffew
12.28.09 | Check out Tomorrow Come Today from Boysetsfire then, bit more of a punk vibe to it. |
Dreamsoffew
12.28.09 | Punk ROCK vibe lol |
tombits
12.28.09 | punk-ROCK? omg stop making genres up to make urself feel smart jesus! |
Dreamsoffew
12.28.09 | My bad. Guess listening to all that Post Viking Black Metal didn't help! |
Prophet178
12.28.09 | Good stuff, listen to Jawbox. |
iarescientists
12.28.09 | i lol'd |
EasternLight
12.28.09 | 6 is amazing, but i wouldnt call it post-hardcore |
ART36
12.28.09 | Decent list, but I'd put Coheed & Cambria plus The Sound of Animals Fighting in the prog rock camp. |
tombits
12.28.09 | such a controversial genre, haha. |
ninjuice
12.28.09 | ACB are lame and I don't think Coheed could really be called post-hardcore. |
tombits
12.28.09 | what would you label them as? pop-punk? |
Dreamsoffew
12.28.09 | Prog rock, that's a real genre dammit!! |
poweroftheweez
12.28.09 | 11 15 24 26 are win |
tombits
12.28.09 | really? although their later material was fairly proggy, i think their debut nods towards at the drive-in more than anything. |
Dreamsoffew
12.28.09 | Eh, to be honest I don't even care. I just know I like it. |
IRAI
12.28.09 | i second the hopesfall exclusion.
11 is the best on here, next to 1, 8, 14, and 22. |
Powerban
12.28.09 | Yeah, pretty solid list though. But do check out Hopesfall - The Satelitte Years and the EP before that. |
TMobotron
12.28.09 | I always agreed that SSTB wasn't proggy but didn't know what it would be considered. I thought it had some post-hardcore elements but not enough to be labeled as post-hardcore, either way its worth mentioning in a list like this. Also TSOAF-Tiger & the Duke was proggy post-hardcore IMO. Great list by the way, the ones I do know were great, and im glad you have quite a few on here i havent heard so I can check some of these out. |
Powerban
12.28.09 | You could also check out The Coma Recovery for something different from your standard post-hardcore. |
tombits
12.28.09 | erghhh, i just got back from a party... not fucking sober. but shit yeah, i'll check those two bands out tomorrow somet time, thanks guys. |
