05.17.09 | Curtis Mayfield of course, but Roots is probably his best album. What's Going On by Marvin Gaye is essential as well. | Time

05.17.09 | the problem with classic soul is that it's pretty much more of a singles-based, rather than an artist- or album-based format. you're better off looking up compilations.
some compilations that I have and think are incredible:
The Essential Northern Soul Story
Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities
Mod Fave Raves Vol 1 - 20 Collectable Modernist Soul Classics
Northern Soul Originals 1-3 | kygermo
05.17.09 | Funkadelic. Seriously. | RobotFrank
06.24.09 | Yes - You need to rush out and get a greatest hits collection (preferably Ultimate Collection) or anthologies by Smokey & The Miracles and The Four Tops. They are both better than The Temptations (but not to knock the temps, don't get me wrong). Also, it's obvious, but The Supremes were hugely successful for a reason. Also, you HAVE to check out Jackie Wilson. Pre-dates Motown by a few years, and had it not been for Berry Gordy (founder of Motown) writing a few of his hits, there wouldn't have been a Motown records.
Here's a few links to some great songs with the Motown sound:
Brenda Holloway - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41DB9RGoA58
The Miracles - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_HhZxWGjYU
The Supremes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbFDVWofYW4
The Four Tops - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6VwUo_f8Z0
J.J. Barnes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Un3Sb7MwgoI
And pre-motown Jackie Wilson:

I used to do a classic soul/motown show at college a few years ago, which forced me to dig deep for hidden gems. Let me know if you want any more, I got tons of this stuff... robotfrank@gmail.com |
