Pain Of Salvation

Coupled with being sick, studying for midterms, and having a snowday today I have had too much time on my hands. Head over to my lastfm account and you'll notice that I've listened to PoS 194 times this past week. Far and away my most listened to artist this week (second is the Absence with just over 30 plays). I listened to each of their albums at least twice, with Scarsick getting 3 and Entropia getting 5. These 200 listens have earned Pain of Salvation a spot among Opeth and Dream Theater as my favorite bands off all time. These are there albums ranked in order from my favorite to least favorite. Keep in mind that besides 6 (and maybe 1) that this was extremely difficult to do.
1Pain of Salvation
The Perfect Element Part One

This album just became my 11th album to currently be rated a 5. It's come a long way since my first
listen
of it last year, where I only loved songs like Idioglossia and Used. Now, I can say that every part of this
album is throughly enjoyable. Gildenlow has one of, if not the most impressive vocal range i've heard.
The
title track and In the Flesh are my two favorite PoS songs ever, and I'd put Idioglossia in the top 5 as
well.
2Pain of Salvation
Entropia

Their debut, and imo most consistent in terms of quality. Though I would say People Passing By and
Nightmist are my definite favorites, each of the other songs switch around every time I listen to this. I
wish PoS kept more of the funk elements that were present on this album, but part of what makes them
so brilliant is that none of their albums sound the same as their last.
3Pain of Salvation
One Hour By the Concrete Lake

Like 1, this has come a long way since I first heard it. Even though the production is a bit thin, the
instrumentation may be the most technical out of all of their albums. I really dig the atmosphere this
album gives off, even if the concept isn't as interesting as their later works. Every song is a highlight
here
depending on my mood, though Inside is always my favorite here.
4Pain of Salvation
Remedy Lane

This album features the band at their emotional best with songs like A Trace of Blood and Undertow.
However, unlike the previous two albums, I do feel that some of the songs here are weaker than songs
like
A Trace of Blood and Beyond the Pale. Still, I can't help but rate this a 4.5 because I enjoy just about
every
second of this. If an album of this quality was released by a different band, it would likely be my
favorite
from them, but since this is PoS I have to put it at 4th.
5Pain of Salvation
Be

Album is pretentious as all fuck, and a bit overlong perhaps but still brilliant. The fact that only about
half
of the tracks here are actually "songs" disappoints me a little but then again if they were all
conventional
songs, the album wouldn't work as well as a whole. Dea Pecuniae and Iter Impius are definitely among
their best songs, and despite being an interlude, Vocari Dei gives me chills every time.
6Pain of Salvation
Scarsick

Definitely a good album, but besides a few songs, this doesn't come close to the quality of any of their
other releases. Spitfall, Kingdom of Loss, Flame to the Moth, and Cribcaged are each fantastic tracks,
and I
can't help but love Disco Queen, but pales in comparison.
