PERFECT NOISE POP LOUD ALT ROCK POST-SHIBUYA-KEI PERECT

Everything you could ever ask for from a j-rock album. Instant classic (dropped 2000 instant classic). Cannot believe I had never heard it before. Tails off at the end but has redeeming bonus tracks. Working on huge review. Absolutely obsessed. Essential.

MINIMAL TECHNO / AMBIENT DUB

Returned to this for the first time in a while and shit damn, 90s/00s Sasu Ripatti was on another level entirely. Will probably have to bump my rating soon. Incredible comp, kicks Entain out of my running top 5 for his projects and warrants a large number of follow-ups. Impeccable study jam.

DEEP HOUSE

This record hates hegemonies and everyone who doesn't understand house I cannot wait to hear it again is it impeccable? Time will tell !

HIGH OCTANE INDIE SHRED POST-SHOEGAZE POST-HARDCORE POPCHORUS FUCKAGE

Impressed by this new alb - not one of the band's best, but their discography is getting into peerless territory and it's a joy to hear them bring so much energy to familiar formulas. One of their must intense *and* accessible records, bangs for days.

CARRIBEAN PSYCH FOLK WEIRDO

Went into this expecting to mildly appreciate for the OPTICS, pleasantly surprised at how far under my skin it got. Special record that I don't want to write too many words about hmm.

AMBIENT (cute daydream)

jajaja it's Tim Hecker month and everyone is talking about Tim Hecker - but this album? SO gorgeous - love that he did something forthrightly melodic and oddly tangential (though still v much in touch with) the grainy-scratchy timbreshit he normally gets associated with. Do not sleep on this!

EXPERIMENTAL (read: loud) BIG BANG BAND JAZZ

Heard this a while ago but zipped for a recheck, and phwoar boi it skronks and bops and fucks. Very accessible, very fun, very LOUD. Introducing to the correct viral algorithms was probably one of Fantano's better individual accomplishments

absolute monster of a record adorable bassline, love the floaty floaty reverie of part 1 vs the relatively kinetic jams of part 2. essential !

MINIMAL / JAZZ

also fw this one very heavily. much darker tone and an *incredible* drum performance, even if the track(album) perhaps peaks a little early.

ARGENTINAGAZE

classic latin rock that is also classic 90s shoegaze. load of great psych and disco(!!!) crossovers here. large highlights.

PROGRESSIVE TRANCE / BREAKS

everything good about '90s electronic in one 45min package. fantastic replay value. Orbital - Belfast remix is better than the (great) original don't call me

SYNTHPOP / HOUSE

get over of your edge-norm Depeche Mode phase and shake it to these Colossal Bangers. classics all over this boi.

EXPERIMENTAL JAZZ

I'm not including the majority of records I heard for '60s month as they already get their hype, but this one deserves a shout. solemn, zany, noirish and occasionally volatile in exactly the right ratios. overlooked.

AMERICAN PRIMITIVISM / BEST AVANT-FOLK

this also gets a '60s shout. i want these guitars to soundtrack my afterlife they are perfect

LOUD OBSCURE '70s PROG

Archival release from Susumu Hirasawa's first band. Demo quality production, but fuck me up that bass tone is monstrous and the energy levels here are fantastic. Use this as a chase for your next listen of Red - highly recommended.

NEW WAVE WITH TEETH AND SASS

Debut release from Susumu Hirasawa's second band. I find that this gets better as it goes along, starts off as novelty jitterbops but knuckles down to some of the coolest grittiest hooks I've heard in a hot minute.

ART POP / SYNTHPOP

My exploration of the Hirasawaverse is still ongoing, but my conclusions so far are that 1) the guy is absurdly talented, 2) his catalogue is absurdly diverse, 3) almost all his albums are 4s?, 4) this is better than a 4. Absolutely gorgeous, occasionally epic, always forward-thinking. Quite rightly lauded as one of the best of the '90s.
