05.11.22 | hit me up, sputnik!
one rec per genre per user please - stalk my ratings and do your works. rule of thumb = basic is better (save those deep cuts for the actual list, if I ever make it)
any specification on the list entries is usually gearing away from stuff I know well, as opposed to stuff I don't like (sometimes it is both!) |
GhandhiLion
05.11.22 | The gigachad move would be to not rank them in the end |
parksungjoon
05.11.22 | Napalm Death

JohnnyoftheWell
05.11.22 | "The gigachad move would be to not rank them in the end"
this is more than likely tbqh, but I'm more interested in opening a few new doors than ending up with a big bad ultradecisive hot take
pre-70s prog is fine! just nothing modern please |

05.11.22 | probs stick close to the mothership, unless it's gonna change my view on the genre as a whole somehow
ONE REC PER GENRE PER USER but thanx ghandhi, will probs aim for 2 or 3 for bluesgrass |
GhandhiLion
05.11.22 | That David Grisman album might be hard to find, but it's well worth it if you do |

05.11.22 | Nightwish is a really bad pick for power metal imo. They are far more suited to be labeled as symphonic metal and they do not have as prominent power metal elements. I would say that you should choose

05.11.22 | For Death Metal, Ad Nauseaum is a great album for the niche subgenre of "dissonant death metal" but an awful pick for what death metal at large is typically represented by.

Keep in mind my recs are leaning more into the psychedelic/space rock end of the genre, if you want sabbath worship you can listen to Sleep |

06.19.22 | funk is a cool genre that i don't yet love but hope will find a place in my life outside of this frantic cramjam, and i will jam more of it before the finish !

gotta fix that my dude |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.20.22 | do not even start on the number of hip hop classics I haven't checked lol (Illmatic will be fixed though)
Trif, there is no system! I'm vaguely working at one or two genres at a time, with ref to stuff in the back of my head and this lovely pool of recs and whatever people prod at me elsewhere and it's big and messy enough to be steered by intuition and it will get to Hybrid |
Trifolium

06.29.22 | nice machine girl ratings, been listening to wlfgrl for the first time over the last few days, good shit. deffo an artist i was to tackle the full discog |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.29.22 | mmm yeah if it weren't for *this*, i'd defs be up for a full discog plough on machine girl - not sure i've fallen in love or anything, but everything i've heard has enough intrigue that i wanna keep going. will finish it off sometime in the vague, i hope (all the main stuff anyway - those mixes + eps are labyrinthine) |
MarsKid
06.29.22 | Johnny, I know you essentially said no to emo, but I'm gonna try and swing for the fences with something off the beaten path:
[EMO] An Embrace of Angels: 'Ere January Be Unwintered
https://anembraceofangels.bandcamp.com/releases
Some incredible screamo from the underground.
Cons: is skrem
Pros: is good skrem
Pots gave it a 4.0 (seal of approval? you decide!) |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.29.22 | oooook !
am midkey crossing my fingers that this will take long enough for the new genre tags to be introduced before i can publish, which will leave room for extra skramz. am down for that + cormano's thing for more emo though meanwhile |

JohnnyoftheWell
06.29.22 | sure dude, hit me! i have free spotify, so will likely flit around on them and zero in on a couple of artists to check more thoroughly, if that's cool?
big update and tentative book closed on country |

06.29.22 | this one is pure techno: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/261R4LiqDCT7zfe9qupapn?si=thCZ1_8qRQ-qpBHRzoGa7g
and this one is more electro focused: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/30E8rx46T3cNdrbqBvB6bb?si=zlOt_zTlRTOU2-_G9SG2NQ
haven’t really filled out the electro one a lot because you’d be surprised how many of my favorite tunes just straight up aren’t on Spotify : ( |
SharkTooth
06.29.22 | If you want house I heavily recommend footwork
DJ Rashad - Double Cup
DJ Rashad - Just a Taste
Machine Girl - WLFGRL
Machinedrum - Room(s)
Machinedrum - Vapor City
|
SharkTooth
06.29.22 | Also I see you haven't any big beat in your breaks,
so here's what I have
Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
Prodigy - The Fat of The Land
The Crystal Method - Vegas |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.30.22 | big beat is all covered in my older ratings - not feeling much relative need for discovery there. WLFGRL is on this list, but I'll defs check more footwork - and yesss hyp thanks, will peruse in the soon

09.06.22 | What have you heard in regards to classics within the genre? (And what have your thoughts been on them?) |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Ok so not digging west coast g funk sound much, tentatively enjoying east coast and southern and jazz rap
I think you seem to like artists with a lot of personality and a lot of weirdness. With that in mind I think for some starter classics you should peep The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II tha Pharcyde, Slum Village - FANTASTIC Vol. 1, Prince Paul - A Prince Among Thieves (it’s like a hip hop rock opera lol), Gravediggaz - 6 feet deep, dr. Dooom (Kool keith) - first come first served (and if you like this one then we have a loooot more ground to cover lol), slick Rick - the art of story telling, fu-schnickens - nervous breakdown, quasimoto - the unseen |
kevbogz
09.06.22 | ^ wu's solo albums (liquid swords + only 4 cuban linx + tical), big L, fugees, mobb deep, pete rock, gang starr, digable planets, a tribe called quest, freddie gibbs, |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | I agree with all of those hard (except Freddie Gibbs lol) but I’m trying to think about this from a gateway perspective and I’m banking on a hunch that Johnny is going to get into the genre through the weird stuff before he comes to appreciate the more traditional stuff. Digable Planets is a good bet to add tho I think |
kevbogz
09.06.22 | i like freddie :( + think he'd appreciate the collab with madlib
hmmm that makes sense. fugees and digable planets for sure then. i'm so far out of the modern rap game that that's all i got. second quasimoto, gravediggaz, and dr. doooom |
normaloctagon
09.06.22 | “and the handful of eminem, kanye and linkin park singles norm is about to rec“

09.06.22 | he might go for the more artsy shit like shabzaz palaces, cannibal ox, and deltron 3030/del the funky homosapien |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Yeah I’ve come to accept that I’m in the minority not liking Freddie
I don’t really have any modern rap artists I’d put a priority on either
I forgot cannibal ox - the cold vein should definitely be on there, maybe even company flow - funcrusher plus |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Lmao oh you beat me to can ox
Yeah deltron 3030 is another good bet too, probably handsome boy modeling school as well while we are on the subject of prince paul and Dan the Automator |
kevbogz
09.06.22 | oooo i think he would def love HBMS |

09.06.22 | Also nujabes / fat Jon samurai champloo soundtrack and fat Jon solo stuff if you like nujabes instrumentally |

normaloctagon
09.06.22 | if johnny gets in to shabazz palaces at the expense of all these other great recs i will cry
going the more alt-y route is defs the way for jotwah, love your recs kev but a lot of them are too golden age for that saucy boy, seconding the cannibal ox - cold vein rec, my favorite digable planets record is probably the blowout comb album, quasimoto's unseen for sureee, dr. dooom for sureee, raekwon's built 4 cuban linx for sureee a little more classic but still cold and weird production |
kevbogz
09.06.22 | yeahhhhhhhhh might've pulled the trigger on hip-hop albums *I* thought were classics instead of, like potsy said, putting myself in johnny's shoes |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Yeah, several of the wu solo debuts border on weird enough for consideration for sure tho. Tical is also real fuckin weird. |
kevbogz
09.06.22 | unfortunately overshadowed by liquid swords and cuban linx. even supreme clientele has more votes SMH |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Yeah idk why people don’t like Tical much, or even just overlook it. it’s easily in my top 5 wu solo debuts. Likely top 3. Method man is generally a better feature/collab artist than a solo artist imo but that album is an exception to me. Speaking of which have you heard the new dj muggs track with slick Rick and method man “metropolis”? It has no business being as good as it is. Honestly method man gets bodied by slick Rick but his verse isn’t even bad, it’s just that slick Rick has no business randomly being so fucking good in 2022 |
normaloctagon
09.06.22 | i oughta check that tical record |
kevbogz
09.06.22 | lmao i had no idea slick rick was still around. will peep after white people |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | I know, I usually scoff and move along when I see new tracks by old heads pop up in my Spotify release radar because 9 times out of 10 they are absolute trash but I was so taken aback by a Slick Rick feature in the year of our lord 2022 that I had to peep it. Glad I did. |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Like it’s a straight up two minute masterclass in flow when he comes in |

09.06.22 | i'm now ashamed to say that i've slept on slick rick my entire life .................... |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Lmao Slick Rick is a fucking legend dude, peep Who Rotten Em
The names Slick for a reason |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | I honestly slept on him too until I was in my early 20s, then someone showed me Who Rotten Em and I was like “oh wtf I assumed he sucked cuz the goofy eye patch gimmick” (I thought it was a gimmick at the time but he actually damaged his eye as a baby and has had it pretty much his whole life) |

09.06.22 | See this list now, great stuff Johnny! My rec's for you (might update don’t have more time atm):
- Jazz: Snarky Puppy - We like it Here (was surprised you haven't rated anything by them yet. It's jazz-fusion but I guess it counts and it's fantastic anyway so I say it does).
- Ambient: Karl Jenkins – Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary
- Black Metal - Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
- Hard Rock – Dizzy Mizz Lizzy – Dizzy Mizz Lizzy
|
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | @johnny yes hip hop is the GOAT genre bro I’m excited for you |

09.06.22 | Ha, didn't expect to see Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, brings back memories |
PotsyTater
09.06.22 | Hell yeah dude. He’s a bit of an anomaly in hip-hop. Probably the weirdest dude in the game. For future reference here are some of his other essentials:
Kool Keith - Sex Style
Kool Keith - Black Elvis
ULTRA - BIG TIME
Dr. octagon - Dr. octagonecologyst
Analog Brothers - Pimp to Eat (a hip hop BAND with ice-t and others lol)
Ultramagnetic MC’s - Critical Beatdown and Four Horsemen (his origin group)
Masters of Illusion - self titled |

Mort.
06.06.23 | i only recently found out about jacob collier and ive gotta say, i really fucking despise him |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.07.23 | "maybe less culturally ingrained in the UK?"
hmmm i wouldn't generalise from my experience on this bc we do have a scene and i've definitely met people who felt strong attachments to the underground growth + eventual mainstream recognition of grime? but defs, for me and everyone i knew aged 10 onwards, it was all eninem/kanye/snoop/timbaland on whoever's motorola and definitely felt like second helpings from the US |
Mort.
06.07.23 | yeah we dont have the same cultural history hence why grime is so different
but growing up eminem and kanye was ubiquitous |
budgie
06.07.23 | one of my finger joints is hurting |
Ryus
06.07.23 | yeah makes sense
obv i wasnt around in the 90s for the explosion in popularity but its kinda crazy just how popular it was even when i was like 8 years old. everybody wanted to be a rapper and we would rank lil wayne eminem kanye etc. even in grade school lmao. born to be a sputter |
