YoYo's Top 25 of 2021
Incredible year for music with some incredible new finds, as well as some old favorite artists of mine making big comebacks. Let's dive in. |
25 | | Deafheaven Infinite Granite |
24 | | Between the Buried and Me Colors II |
23 | | Hail the Sun New Age Filth |
22 | | Trophy Scars Astral Pariah |
21 | | Silk Sonic An Evening with Silk Sonic |
20 | | Dinosaur Jr. Sweep It Into Space |
19 | | Radio Supernova Takaisin |
18 | | The World Is a Beautiful Place... Illusory Walls |
17 | | Grayscale Umbra |
16 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor G_d's Pee AT STATE'S END!
Album title of the year |
15 | | Yon order of violence
This band has way too few listeners, and I'm super grateful for MarsKid's review for bringing it into my life. This album is absolutely punishing and the beginning of an amazing journey for Yon. |
14 | | Thrice Horizons/East
When it hits, it hits HARD. But that last song can frik off |
13 | | Dvne Etemen Ænka
This grew off me a bit, but it's still phenomenal. Dvne creates atmosphere like few other bands working today. |
12 | | Black Country, New Road For the first time
Opus is literally just a Thank You Scientist song and I wouldn't have it any other way |
11 | | Typhoon (USA-OR) Sympathetic Magic
Typhoon decided to mellow out a bit after 2018's titanic Offerings, and the result is my personal favorite album they've ever made. Consistent throughout and contains some of the most majestic moments of the year. |
10 | | Laura Stevenson Laura Stevenson
Laura's new life as a mother has impacted her music in a lot of ways, but the quality remains the same. You get a healthy mix of all of her styles here, and this is a great bounce back from 2019's disappointing (just my opinion y'all!) The Big Freeze. |
9 | | Scarypoolparty The Act of Forgiveness
If this were trimmed down a bit, it would be a contender for AOTY. Alejandro is a freakishly talented human being and I look forward to what he does next. |
8 | | BROCKHAMPTON Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine
WHO LET THE DOPE BOYS OUUUUUUTTTTT |
7 | | Origami Angel GAMI GANG
*trap beat intensifies* |
6 | | Little Simz Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
The first half of this album is some of the best music of the entire year. The back half isn't quite as strong, but tracks 1-9 here are an unbelievable run. |
5 | | I Feel Fine The Cold In Every Shelter
It's like warm fuzzy emo Christmas caroling |
4 | | Porter Robinson Nurture
This one's for you johnny : ) |
3 | | A Great Big Pile of Leaves Pono
We out here vibin. The ultimate summer release. |
2 | | Every Time I Die Radical
They're unfortunately in shambles right now, but ETID continue to deliver incredible jams 20 years in. Some of their most unhinged and volatile songs reside on Radical, and Goose is easily the best drummer they've ever had. |
1 | | Sweet Trip A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals
My first 5 since 2017, one of the most consistent and jaw-dropping albums I've ever heard. Sweet Trip have returned with their best music yet. |
