01.30.20 | "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | Can someone vet the following list for clarification, thanks. I'm not claiming ALL of these are emo, just a few 'potentials' as I'm looking to expand my knowledge of what it may or may not constitute, presumably anything described as emotional hardcore, or skramz must count. Anywhere, here's a vague list from memory...
Off Minor, Orchid, Cara Neir, Modern Life is War, Defeater, Envy, State Faults, City of Caterpillar, Gospel, Circle Takes the Square, Vi Som Alaskarde…, Fall of Troy.
Using certain parameters/descriptors I've seen you could even imagine a band like Converge being called emo, which goes to show where it could get confusing. |
dedex
01.30.20 | @Demon: They're all skramz to a certain degree except for MLIW, Defeater (both 2000s hardcore) and The Fall of Troy (mathy post-hardcore)
"Using certain parameters/descriptors I've seen you could even imagine a band like Converge being called emo, which goes to show where it could get confusing."
Which descriptors do you have in mind ? |
Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | I added FoT as a red herring, they're not, but the vocals have a certain emo-like quality to them, more-so than just being 'emotional' imo.
Skramz is essentially a combination of emo and post-rock, right? Yeah a lot of these bands fit that descriptor, even if some add numerous other elements. Orchid are skramz? Confused by that one. They hardly let their songs breathe, almost grind-like in structure (especially the earlier stuff). Where are the twinkly guitars?
Why are certain bands omitted just for being post-2000? Lol.
I just meant that Converge touch upon emotional themes and have prominent hardcore roots, not saying they are, but I see why someone might think they were, if that makes sense. |
dedex
01.30.20 | I agree with FoT, even though I think the emo-like vocals have more to do with how young the singer was at the time than anything else
Eeeeeeh I'd say skramz is more a combination of emo and post-hardcore, and some bands add some other influences: post-rock (Envy or City of Caterpillar) or math rock/mathcore (Gospel or CTtS). Orchid are more emoviolence (= screamo, but more chaotic and violent), a bit like that Nuvolascura record you didn't like.
"Why are certain bands omitted just for being post-2000? Lol."
Which bands are you thinking of?
It's trve Converge approaches emotional themes but their delivery music-wise is less emotional and more aggressive imo, hence why almost nobody classifies them as emo/screamo. |
Deathconscious
01.30.20 | @Son of mr pan wow, is that a sput quote? And if so, by who? |
dedex
01.30.20 | ^not a sput quote, it's a pretty "famous" copypasta
so nope, it won't make the Sputnik Copypasta II |
Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | 'Which bands are you thinking of?' - just when you said MLIW/Defeater were '2000s hardcore', I was wondering if they were being omitted due to time period. Fair enough if not.
'Orchid are more emoviolence (= screamo, but more chaotic and violent), a bit like that Nuvolascura record you didn't like.'
Yeah I don't like Orchid either so far, whoops.
Skramz often incorporates post-hardcore come to think of it, although I always thought post-rock was a key element of that term (maybe I'm mistaken though, wouldn't be the first time). |
alamo
01.30.20 | emo my name forever more |
dedex
01.30.20 | They're omitted because they're not skramz, not because of the time period. Even if their lyrics contain some emotional tropes, the music itself is pretty much straight melodic hardcore (note it's not uncommon for melohardcore bands to be emotional, eg The Carrier)
"Yeah, I don't like Orchid either so far, whoops."
Now you know what you don't like :D
Well I'd say post-rock is important for a lot of bands, but it's not necessarily a definitive influence of the genre: eg the most lauded Sput skramz band, Gospel, does not rely on post-rock but rather on prog and math |
Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | I didn't need telling they're not skramz dude (I'm not that dense), just why they aren't classed as 'emo' :-). Melodic hardcore is cool with me though.
Gospel always confused me yeah, because it has a lot of prog tropes, more-so than other things I've heard described as skramz. I guess it must be a grey area, damn these grey areas. |
dedex
01.30.20 | Ha, I guess my whole point of them not being 'emo' is that they don't sound emo at all to me, but it's not the best argumentation you'll encounter.
Grey areas bands are the best tho |
Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | They can be, but how am I supposed to organise my CD library by genre? |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.30.20 | Oh lol I do that too. All things hardcore get squeezed together though oops (mewithoutyou are in the same section as Converge :/)
Put emo as a sister genre to hardcore |
Trifolium
01.30.20 | Me too, genre is the best way to sort your shelves. Much easier to search for bands that cater for a similar mood that way, but some oddities are crazy hard to sort. |
Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | I don't really do that by the way guys, you just got exposed for being irredeemably sad basement dwellers, congrats. Hehe. |

Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | OK I did have them in alphabetical order (chronological for each artist), but now they're all stuck in boxes and I just keep adding to the collective mass without re-organising. It's a tragedy. Now I'm emo. |
SymbolicInTime
01.30.20 | I also do alphabetical with chronological for each artist |
Trifolium
01.30.20 | Oh no Demon that idea truly makes me a bit dizzy and uncomfortable. 😖~~~~ |

Trifolium
01.30.20 | I'll get over it. I hope...
As long as you are able to deal with it. |
Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | I'm certainly not happy about it, but when they're all boxed up in containers and require rummaging around to sort them it takes away the fun. If they were properly displayed on shelves it'd be compulsory. Damn compromises. |
Trifolium
01.30.20 | Yes this is a harsh one. Although it does seem cosy too. There's just so much charm in seeing many CDs in one place.
This isn't about emo at all any more is it? |
GuanoBumbershoot
01.30.20 | I believe Emo was once an old, old wooden ship... |
Demon of the Fall
01.30.20 | I'm gonna release an experimental one man bedroom project of random screams intersected with spoken word excerpts from this thread - the lyrics will be completely indecipherable, but will be from the trapped CD's perspective.
And thus the thread's subject matter has aligned, heart-breaking and revolutionary emo. |
dedex
01.30.20 | trve emo is Daniel Johnston |
Trifolium
01.30.20 | Perfect, Demon saves the day!
I'd buy that, and file it next to My Chemical Romance and Sum 41, which is probably the closest to Emo in my collection. |
