| My Favorite 10 Albums of 2018
I actually got my Best Of lists done early this year. My tastes run heavily to alt-pop and electro-pop, so you'll see that reflected in this list. | 10 | | Tom Bailey Science Fiction
Weirdly enough, this is the first-ever solo album by Bailey, the former frontman of Thompson Twins. Here he combines '80s new wave sounds with occasional Latin beats, to highly pleasurable effect. Favorite track: What Kind of World | 9 | | Beach House 7
I've loved this band since I first heard them, but this is their first album to make my Top 10 list. The vibe is laid back, the vocals are slow and pretty, and the hooks are strong. Favorite track: Drunk in LA | 8 | | Johnny Marr Call The Comet
Not quite as good as his 2013 album "The Messenger", but pretty damned close. I love The Smiths, but I'm starting to think that maybe Morrissey was holding this guy back. Favorite track: Hi Hello | 7 | | The Republic of Wolves shrine
One of the best bands out there these days from my native Long Island, this album is dark, sweet and just a little heavy. Favorite track: Dialogues | 6 | | Belly Dove
Who would have thought that the first album this band put out in 23 years would turn out to be their best and most consistent LP, but it is. The songs here are really nicely crafted. Favorite track: Mine | 5 | | MGMT Little Dark Age
I liked this duo's debut album, but didn't think much of their next two. In fact, I wouldn't have even bothered with this one except for the strong word of mouth. I used to consider these guys a lesser Passion Pit, but they really pulled me back into the fold with this one. Favorite track: She Works Out Too Much | 4 | | Matt and Kim Almost Everyday
This is another concept album, which finds our heroes musing about topics such as death and growing older. Favorite track: Youngest I Will Be | 3 | | Frankie Cosmos Vessel
I liked this one from the beginning, but at first, the loose structures of the songs confused me. As the year wore on, however, I grew to appreciate this album more and more. Favorite track: Duet | 2 | | Reed and Caroline Hello Science
This one really grew on me over the course of the year. The album is a concept album, composed of songs on a variety of science-themed topics. They're like a more ethereal, less humorous Future Bible Heroes. Favorite track: Before | 1 | | Chvrches Love Is Dead
I've always loved Chvrches, but this is the album I always hoped they were capable of. For me, Lauren Mayberry has become this decade's Hayley Williams. Favorite track: Graffiti | |

01.08.19 | Yeah, I know, this list is far beyond typical Sputtaste. But I call them as I hear them. | Hawks
01.08.19 | Divamen | Hawks
01.08.19 | Divamen | SandwichBubble
01.08.19 | Totally forgot to listen to the new belly...
I don't think I'd dig it nearly as much as you did though | Hawks
01.08.19 | Divamen | DoofDoof
01.08.19 | I liked 8 and 9 a fair bit - half of these I haven’t tried | TwigTW
01.08.19 | I don't know why Johnny Marr waited until the 2010s to release a bunch of Brit-pop albums. If he released them after the Smiths broke up they'd have been hits, and he wouldn't be playing tiny clubs now (while Morrissey plays the big halls)... which is just a long way of saying I liked 8 too. | zakalwe
01.08.19 | lol twig | Divaman
01.08.19 | Hawks, thanks for the display of solidarity. :)
Twig, I suspect you're right. But I'm loving that he put these albums out, even if he would have gotten a lot more notoriety if he'd put them out a couple of decades earlier. At least we can enjoy them now. | Divaman
01.08.19 | Btw, my three Honorable Mentions this year are:
1. Red Lama - Motions
2. Dead Can Dance - Dionysus
3. Robyn - Honey | TwigTW
01.09.19 | Yeah, agreed, I'm really enjoying them. |
