| Culture Club, The B-52s and Tom Bailey
Saw this lineup tonight at The Forest Hills Tennis Stadium. It's an outdoor venue, and not a bad place to see a show, except that there is literally no parking near the stadium, so you have to take public transportation and do a lot of walking. Was surprised to find Culture Club headlining -- thought it would have been the B's, but whatever. | 3 | | Tom Bailey Science Fiction
This is the former lead singer of Thompson Twins. He played with a 3-piece all-female backing band. His set was mostly made up of Thompson Twins material, with just a pair of songs from his brand new solo album. Naturally, he closed with "Hold Me Now". | 2 | | The B-52s Cosmic Thing
Not a bad set tonight, but I've seen them better. Kate sounded good, and Fred sounded like Fred. Unfortunately, Cindy sounded like she gargled with battery acid before the show, and had to croak her way through "Roam" and "Give Me Back My Man". Oh well. | 1 | | Culture Club Kissing to Be Clever
I've never really been a fan of this band, but they sounded pretty good tonight. (And they should have - they had like a 12-piece backing band.) In addition to all of their hits, they opened with Bowie's "Let's Dance", and threw in Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" as part of the encore, for good measure. | |

07.29.18 | Sat in front of two drunk couples. One of the guys thought our row of chairs was a drum set, and repeatedly banged the shit out of it. (How do they always find me?) Been a long time since I saw a show in this venue. Don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. Not a bad place to see a show if you live in Queens (like I used to), and can easily take public transport. But it's kind of a pain in the ass to get there from Long Island. | widowslaugh123
07.29.18 | I don’t know why I still haven’t seen the beefs yet I’m running out of time. | Sniff
07.29.18 | Sounds fun | Divaman
07.29.18 | You should do it, widow. They're my wife's favorite band, so I've seen them at least six times, and they always put on a fun and energetic show. | Titan
07.29.18 | Forest Hills Tennis Stadium has shows now Diva? | Divaman
07.29.18 | Yeah, they started them up again last year or the year before. (They used to have them in the '80s, then they discontinued them for a long time). | Divaman
07.29.18 | For anyone interested, I did a full write-up on my blog at longislandmusicguy.blogspot.com, although it's really long and rambling, and probably a lot more about my own shit than it is about the show. (Sorry about that).
There are also setlists (a full one for The B-52s, and partials for Culture Club and Tom Bailey), posted under each band's name at setlist.fm. | TwigTW
07.29.18 | I wonder who was bigger in their heyday, Culture Club or the B-52's? I'd like to think it was the B-52's but I'm not so sure... It's too bad about Cindy's voice. Sounds like a great show otherwise. It's a nice mix of 80s bands. I love that Thompson Twins album. | Titan
07.29.18 | Culture Club was a lot bigger in the states, not even close....and yes Twig, that Thompson Twins album is pretty great | TwigTW
07.29.18 | Yeah Titan, that's what I suspected. Culture Club were huge. | Divaman
07.29.18 | Yeah, you guys are probably right. The B's have been headlining shows for years - but in their prime, Culture Club probably had the bigger hits. | TwigTW
07.29.18 | I think they were huge on MTV in its formative years, long before the B-52's were featured regularly. That probably made a difference. | Divaman
07.29.18 | Yeah, the B's are actually the older band, so a lot of their most popular stuff (the first two albums) actually pre-dated MTV. It wasn't until their Cosmic Thing album that they put out anything that got much MTV airplay. |
