Metal albums with my favourite guitar tones
Recent Martyr binge has made me start thinking about this a fair bit. |
1 | | Martyr Feeding the Abscess
Clear, super tight, but not overly saturated whilst still feeling rich. Really good, some of the best tones imo. |
2 | | Exodus The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A
Nasty, scratchy, but sounds amazing for the music. Songwriting on the album isn't so good but damn the tones are good. |
3 | | Hypocrisy A Taste of Extreme Divinity
Got that weird mix of a chunky fat metal tone and an HM-2 but it slays and works super well for Hypocrisy in particular. Some of the Bloodbath releases sound similar but this has a better balance. |
4 | | Carcass Heartwork
Slightly gnarly despite some pretty traditional setup. There's a nice grit to the high end that gives it a bit of savagery. |
5 | | Cryptopsy None So Vile
Despite being overscooped, there's such a dense chunkiness to this one that I feel few other albums really match. |
6 | | Gorguts From Wisdom to Hate
Honestly only here because of the genuine shuddering weight of The Quest For Equilibrium. |
7 | | Anthrax Spreading the Disease
Realllly chunky for some reason. The pick attack is really phenomenal. |
8 | | Voivod Post Society
Maybe it's unfair to have Mongrain on here twice but the tone on this one is really killer. Chunky but very full sounding and good during the chords and arpeggios. |
9 | | Meshuggah The Violent Sleep of Reason
Not normally a fan of the djoinga djoing but this one has the more metallic, industrial clang of the Chaosphere era which I appreciate a lot. |
10 | | Savatage Gutter Ballet
Another one which feels pretty dynamic despite being pretty gainy. Helps that it gets paired with some great riffs. |
11 | | Blood Red Throne Altered Genesis
Got this kinda nasty saturation to it that lets it have a lot more grind and girth. |
