01.29.18 | This is half me gushing in excitement over a musical project I'm excited about, and half me asking for more fuel to inspire myself in one way or another.
Any excellent drummers in the black metal/shoegaze scenes that I should check out would be greatly appreciated as well! |
TheSpirit
01.29.18 | Check out the drummer from Bosse-de-Nage, Austin Lunn from Panopticon, and Evan Madden who performed the drums on the Woe album Quietly, Undramatically.

01.29.18 | I think I've heard of Palehorse/Palerider somewhere.... are they new? |
cold
01.29.18 | Pretty much, you have have seen me post about it in another thread |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | Love the name. Picking a name is gonna be a bitch. |
cold
01.29.18 | Also check out Austere, Farsot, Cold Body Radiation, Lifelover, Blut Aus Nord and Year Of No Light just to name a few. |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | BAN is my shit! I remember asking about some entry level BM a year or two ago and someone saying BAN is pretty deep, but now I love 'em. |
cold
01.29.18 | Another good way to discover new bands in the genre is through Spotify, believe it or not. |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | I've had some good luck there, I just happen to trust Sputnikers more than I trust Spotify. |
cold
01.29.18 | I'm a little opposite on that, I want to listen to something without someone else's opinion resonating in my brain, ya feel? |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | That happens to me with everything except music oddly enough. Like, when my friends beat me to seeing a big movie like Bladerunner 2049 or a new video game like Destiny 2 I tell them I don't want to hear their opinions so I can form my own because I am not the same kind of critic when it comes to movies and games that I am when it comes to music. But if I hear their opinions it becomes hard to not set some sort of subconscious expectation of the film or video game and it almost always sours my experience lol. |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | I'm hoping I can convince my guys to throw in some deathy elements too. For the love of Opeth and Ulcerate. |
DungeonBoy
01.29.18 | lol, throw in a little Ulcerate. Can't wait to hear it |
Keyblade
01.29.18 | cold body radiation - the great white emptiness
the goat |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | I am gonna have to find some bomb ass cocaine if I have any hopes of playing like JSM lmao
Gotta work on them blasts |
Keyblade
01.29.18 | also user foxblood's debut is great
nameless coyote - devoured by the swirling night |
Prancer
01.29.18 | if I were ever to make a band centered around a certain genre, I would want to search for sounds outside of that genre for inspiration. too many projects just recreate sounds instead of creating them, but maybe you just want to play some blackgaze which is perfectly fine too. |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | Damn is there some kinda directory in the forums with user bands? I wanna support the men and women of Sput. |
Keyblade
01.29.18 | someone made a list once, i cant remember who tho |
foxblood
01.29.18 | love u key. @pjquinones
https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1067861&listid=165207#51 |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | @Prancer - my main goal is to have music that is super fun to play and atmoblack/blackgaze is fun as fuck to play, but me and my friends generally have a mindset of writing what we think fits regardless of what genre it falls in. yes, all of these happen to fall among bm/dm but as long as we're all having fun i could care less what genre we end up being called haha. this is just my way of putting out feelers to further inspire myself. |
Prancer
01.29.18 | check out Brutus - Burst. it's mainly a post hardcore album but has a lot of those blackgazey soundscapes |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | Fuuuuuuck yeah @foxblood. This is dope!
Sidebar: When is team sput gonna activate the at sign so we can tag eachother rightfully? |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | @Prancer - dope! sounds like it might be somewhat in the alley of Redshift Pilots, who i need to add to this list. |
DungeonBoy
01.29.18 | @Keyblade, never heard this mentioned on this site but thanks for pointing this out. It sounds like Deafheaven used this EP as a blueprint for SUN BAT HER |
Keyblade
01.29.18 | which one dude, cold body radion or nameless coyote? |
DungeonBoy
01.29.18 | nameless coyote, it's more whimsical than most blackgaze was at that time as far as I remember |
Keyblade
01.29.18 | yea
one thing i love about that record is the actual shoegaze influences. a lot of blackgaze is called blackgaze but has almost nothing to do with gaze. on that ep u could hear early mbv and lilys its awesome |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | I think the genre "blackgaze" was deemed by people who hear post-rock and think shoegaze, which is such a broad misnomer that the two are almost seamlessly spoken of as the same thing.
I for one can tell the difference immediately when listening to This Will Destroy You vs. GY!BE, so it's just a matter of educating the masses. |
foxblood
01.29.18 | lilys and isn't anything were my biggest inspirations at the time yep. thaanks dungeon and yes deafheaven are from my area and i agree lol |
pjquinones747
01.29.18 | I keep forgetting that I can delete comments on my own lists |
Dewinged
01.30.18 | Might want to check Sylvaine - Wistful (which is produced by Alcest I think or at least he plays smth there.) |
zaruyache
01.30.18 | Lantlos?
"the two are almost seamlessly spoken of as the same thing"
in the early days post-black metal meant having post-rock influences as well as being a type of "modern" black metal different than typical second-wave copycats; using cleaner production values, less emphasis on blasts, etc. And then it slowly shifted into all just being called blackgaze for some reason even though they're not the same thing. |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | I'm gonna start adding the recs to the list.
Panopticon slays.
@zaru - interesting tidbit. I wish there were more documentaries on the progress of subgenres as they happen, and I do know black metal has a couple good ones, but such is the nature of convoluted subgenres that they aren't well known enough to be documented in such a way until much time has passed. |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | Got through a couple of these between last night and this morning. Evan Madden rips! @TheSpirit |
pjquinones747
02.04.18 | Holy fuck @coldheaven Heretoir is absolutely nuts. I missed out HARD on this album last year. |
budgie
02.04.18 | no heretoir s/t? that's m favorite |
pjquinones747
02.05.18 | I listened to a bit of it. Didn't find it as impressive but I also didn't give it the attention it deserves by the time I pulled myself away from The Circle. |
budgie
02.05.18 | gotcha. heretoir s/t is pure magic to me whereas i couldn't stand the circle haha. different strokes |
DungeonBoy
02.05.18 | s/t is amateurish but charming |
pjquinones747
02.05.18 | @DungeonBoy: agreed |
budgie
02.05.18 | idk guys, to follow the sun is like the most beautiful track ever |
pjquinones747
02.05.18 | I'll have to give it another go. My initial impression was definitely amateur charm. |
