Blackgaze Recs

Black metal, blackgaze, shoegaze, post-rock/metal, bits of prog. That's the new band I'm in! I've never been more willing to commit to a project in my life, because I love the music we've been making. I tend to write all of the lyrics and most of the themes center around mythology, idolatry, and futility. Who are your favorite artists from these genres? Who has themes akin to the ones I mentioned that I might go to as a muse? Yes I cheated on the title to get your attention. If it worked don't complain.
1Alcest
Les Voyages de l'Âme
2Ne Obliviscaris
Citadel

Huge inspiration as a drummer and a songwriter.
3Deafheaven
New Bermuda
4Oathbreaker
Maelstrom

Their earlier stuff has a bit more hardcore elements, but Caro's vocals are just amazing.
5Opeth
Still Life

I'd be remiss if I didn't put in my favorite band in the extreme(?) metal scene. They influence just about everything I think about musically at this rate.
6Ulcerate
Everything Is Fire

The biggest outlier here, I know. I mostly get inspired by the post-metal sections and lyrical themes from Ulcerate. Plus JSM is quickly becoming my favorite drummer.
7An Autumn For Crippled Children
Try Not To Destroy Everything You Love
8Sleepmakeswaves
Sleepmakeswaves
9Caspian
Dust and Disquiet
10Russian Circles
Memorial
11Portal
Swarth

Not sure if you'd call Portal lo-fi (because I'm also assuming that's the nice way of saying it's got that classic bm feel that sounds like it was tracked through a potato), but we're all in love with the sinister elements here.
12The Great Old Ones
Tekeli-Li
13Cormorant
Diaspora
14Wolves in the Throne Room
Two Hunters

The omission of great classic bm bands is entirely intentional here. Love those tunes but we're taking a heavy swing in the black metal/blackgaze direction, so Deafheaven and Oathbreaker are much more accurate than Burzum and Emperor. The rest of these are overall influences.

TheSpirit

Loved this album. The "mythical forest" kinda vibe I get from it is super cool. It makes me want to spend time learning more about piano/organ and choral arrangements.

TheSpirit

I think most of these blackgaze albums almost require 2 or 3 listen throughs. All very dense material. However, Spirit was totally right about the drummer here. I also like how you can hear him very well. Stands out in the mix but doesn't flood over the guitars or the vocals.
