A Folkin' Metal Tourney Discovery Round 4

Tbh these bands don't really have anything in common other than both being from North America. On one hand we've got the somber, reflective brand of acoustic folk tinged with black metal that Canadian SIG:AR:TYR plays. On the other, we have the bombastic folky metalness of Americans Wilderun. Let the battle begin!

Sailing the Seas of Fate

SCREAM! - You could argue about this being an acoustic folk album with metal bits thrown in rather than the opposite. The bare sound of the accoustic guitar creates a bleak atmosphere with electric guitars coming in to add power to certain passages. The album feels like a pagan army marching towards a battle they know they will not win. IVery atmospheric (almost ambient in parts), bleak and purposeful.

Olden Tales & Deathly Trails

HellPriest - A very American folk metal album. It avoids all the worst trappings of folk metal. It's not twee or jolly. Excellent clean vocals contrast with deathly grunts. They have been likened to Opeth with folk, but Opeth was rarely this adventurous. Wilderun proves that one can play folk metal without resorting to bar room jigs.
