Friday13th
12.25.14 | Voting ends on Sunday. Heard Jan Dukes a couple times, so I'm just gonna cut the crap and vote for Mercator
Projected already. |
zakalwe
12.25.14 | It doesn't get any more hardcore than round 3 of the Prog tourney starting up on Xmas day.
More mulled wine with the loved ones? nah I'm off to spin jan dukes de grey |
Friday13th
12.25.14 | 'nog 'n' prog :D |

@Meat thanks man |
Jethro42
12.26.14 | I have my preference, but I don't reveal it now (in case I change my mind?). It's a surprise. Joyeux Noël! |
JJKeys
12.26.14 | Commenting so I remember to check these out |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | yeah, JJKeys, do it before Sunday and you can vote. |
Jethro42
12.26.14 | East of Eden wins for me. These guys had so many great ideas and a unique sound for 1969. They are so inventive with the violin, flute and sax. They are challenging and daring. On the other hand, Jan Dukes de Grey are too dissonant (sometimes it's like if they played one disc over another one to my ear), it's also repetitive, unpolished and wandering. They use too many instruments for too little imagination. |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | Don't be shy, guys :]
@Jethro agreed hard. Jan Dukes is interesting, but it isn't pleasant or as far out as Comus. |
gagnonov
12.27.14 | vote goes to Dukes |
Onirium
12.27.14 | I just finished jamming Mercator Projected for the first time, and although it had interesting ideas, it
felt a little bland. Those ideas weren't really explored to their full potential in my opinion. The fact
that it was in 1969 still makes it impressively innovative, but I don't know if that's something I'll
consider when voting or rating it. It's a great album, but I'll have to jam it again a few times |
Friday13th
12.27.14 | Fair enough. Hey, quick fun fact. The violin player in East of Eden is the same guy who played in "Baba O'Riley!" |
OwMySnauze
12.27.14 | I'm digging the folky wacky vibe on Jan Dukes de Grey. That gets my vote. |
JJKeys
12.27.14 | Spinning some East of Eden right now - I can hear some Mahavishnu Orchestra in there as well; digging it, but not too hard |
manosg
12.27.14 | I heard both and even though I liked them they didn't blow my mind. Mercator Projected is very interesting and feels ahead of its time having released in an era that psych was giving its place to prog. On the other hand, Mice and Rats in the Loft feels like it should have been released a couple years ago.
Of the two albums, my favorite track is easily Sun Symphonica but after that Mice and Rats feels like it doesn't go somewhere. It's feels a bit unfocused.
So my vote goes to 1 as I enjoyed it a bit more overall. |
gagnonov
12.27.14 | Sun Symphonica is definitely the best track on here, agreed about the rest of the album not going anywhere |
Friday13th
12.27.14 | 3-2 |
Calc
12.27.14 | East of Eden be my vote |
SharkTooth
12.27.14 | really dug 1, gonna check out 2 right now |
Friday13th
12.27.14 | yeah, that's what I'm talking about, SharkTooth! 4-2 |
SharkTooth
12.27.14 | my vote goes to one for this |
JJKeys
12.27.14 | My vote goes to 2 |
Friday13th
12.27.14 | 5-3 |
menawati
12.28.14 | "unpolished and wandering"
agree jethro, probably why I like it ;), going to vote for 2 |
TwigTW
12.28.14 | Set the controls for the heart of the Sun--sounds like it's gonna be a psychedelic Sunday! |
Mad.
12.28.14 | Will listen to these today |
JJKeys
12.28.14 | *Really* digging 2, it's far more erratic and adventurous than 1, plus the recording quality for 1 didn't help its case.
I might even buy a physical copy of the album if there are any |
SharkTooth
12.28.14 | 1 just just pulls off its ideas with a lot better execution, 2 just doesn't seem to lead anywhere with the direction it takes |
SCREAM!
12.28.14 | @JJ here's a physical copy for ya

Friday13th
12.28.14 | 5-4 |
Onirium
12.28.14 | @Shark 1 is more focused, I agree, but I feel like their ideas could be more developed. It just fall flat at
times |
Friday13th
12.28.14 | Is that a vote for mice then? |
SharkTooth
12.28.14 | @Onirium
I agree, thrrr are several times it's ideas fall flat. But for what it's worth I'd say it holds pretty well on its own |
Onirium
12.28.14 | @Friday yes
@Shark yeah, it definitely is more cohesive as a whole than Dukes. But personally, I think the total mess that is Mice and Rats is charming and a little more interesting than Mercator |
Friday13th
12.28.14 | 5-5 tie. I'll leave voting open till the end of the day, but to those who have voted get ready for the next match. |
JJKeys
12.28.14 | @Scream - oh wow! only $16 shipping! |
SCREAM!
12.28.14 | Alright so my vote goes to 2. Both great albums that I will certainly keep revisiting though. 1 has some really incredible chill and rocking moments but others where it feels like they kind of missed what they were going for. 2 brings in some of that Comus-esque zanyness that I really enjoyed |
JJKeys
12.28.14 | Woop woop! Does that take 2 into the lead? It was getting thrashed yesterday night |
Friday13th
12.28.14 | 5-6 and praying Meat or someone else with some sense comes and turns this around lol. I'll be okay though, I won't be a Fripper. |
Jethro42
12.28.14 | @SCREAM; While I dig Comus, I don't have much pleasure to listen to Jan Dukes de Grey. |
Mad.
12.28.14 | Damn sorry guys haven't had time to listen :/ might be able to do so tomorrow morning if we end up with a tiebreak |
TwigTW
12.28.14 | Mice and Rats in the Attic is a trip. It gets my vote. |

12.28.14 | And Mad if he gets his ass in gear |
zakalwe
12.28.14 | Jan dukes is all over the place in a good way and would possibly get the vote after a few more listens but as it stands I'm going for Eden.
Apologies for the lateness dudes. |
Friday13th
12.28.14 | 6-7! |
Jethro42
12.29.14 | The distributions are all well done up to now, Friday (up to round 4 actually)! |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | Thanks, well the races are getting tighter and tighter...thought East of Eden would smoke Jan Dukes though :p |
Jethro42
12.29.14 | Same here. You should also try Snafu if you haven't already. Same formula but a little more jazzy. |
Frippertronics

12.29.14 | tbh this jan album is my fav of all so far |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | lol my least fave of all so far, but it's a democracy. Jan Dukes wins 6-10 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | our prog tastes clearly deviate then cuz your album was one of my least favs so far lol |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | I knew it wasn't the most accessible album, but dang I thought the early '69 release would impress. Still
think its more accessible and original than Jan Dukes though. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | i didnt find it inaccessible at all and i still liked it but just wasnt my fav of all the albums we've heard here (all of which have been good) |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | True none have been bad yet. Wait for that "metalcore" match, though! lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | i cant believe you even allowed that to exist. i guess it will be good comic relief at least. |
