2013

Yup, that was not a typo - this is a list for 2013. For me, 2014 was a damn letdown rafter one of the most awesome years in ages. I'll make a 2014 list when I've had rtime to check out a couple of extra albums, but here's a few reasons why 2013 rshould still be commemorated.
1Kayo Dot
Hubardo

An avant garde juggernaut from one of today's foremost experimental band; a highlight in
their incredible discography and better than Coffins on Io for sure.
2Queens of the Stone Age
...Like Clockwork

I wasn't particularly blown away by this at first, but with repeat listens it became increasingly
clear that it's a carefully written work of art that pushes Homme's boundaries and flows
amazingly as a whole
3The Dillinger Escape Plan
One of Us is the Killer

They may have done better, but TDEP's latest album still plays to their strengths and is just as
addictively manic as ever
4Secret Chiefs 3
Book of Souls: Folio A

Trey Spruance's main project came out with something more consistent and fluid than might
have been expected, and as a result it took me a while to realise how amazingly weird this is
5Protest the Hero
Volition

As tongue-in-cheek, trashy and fun as ever, Protest the Hero delivered an album full of some
of their hooks and riffs that is just about entertaining enough to avoid seeming too self-
indulgent. The style they started out on with Scurrilous has been perfected here.
6Marnero
Il Sopravissuto

An overlooked gem - this Italian hardcore/post-rock unit's second album is emotionally
harrowing and incredibly infectious. Their songwriting is tight and I look forward to hearing
whatever they do next. This is (or was) free on Bandcamp, so go and check it out!
7A Lot Like Birds
No Place

An album even fuller with ambition than Conversation Piece, ALLB can be a little over the top vocally lyrically/here, and the music is often
confusing and dense. It took me several listens to really get into it and see that this is a bold, powerful piece of music that just about manages
to hold itself together under the huge weight of ideas that have gone into it, ending up infectious and awesome. And the rhythms here are
ridiculous.
8Cloudkicker
Subsume

Ben Sharp returns to a heavier sound but mixes in his more recent atmospheres, and the result was just as incredible as one might expect.
9 O'Brother
Disillusion

Garden Window is one of my favourite albums from the 21st century so far, so I had a lot of expectations for this. Disillusion is a bit less
refined and less striking, but it's dark, cohesive and intriguing.
10Steven Wilson
The Raven That Refused to Sing

The prog hero of our time released one of his better albums. Not much more to say.
11Circle Takes the Square
Decompositions: Volume Number One
12Arcane Roots
Blood & Chemistry
13Cult of Luna
Vertikal
14Vaura
The Missing
