Something Descriptive

some sweet albums from 2014 because an amount of time has passed since the year began and some music has come out in that time and I have listened to it because music is great don't you think?
25Rise Against
The Black Market

3.0. I never agreed with people saying that Rise Against were past their prime until I heard this. Appeal to Reason and Endgame were still enjoyable albums top to bottom, mostly, but this is just lazy-sounding and lacklustre. The presence of People Live Here keeps it just above a 2.5. MY GOD IS BETTER THAN YOURS
24John Frusciante
Enclosure

3.0. What the fuck even happened here PBX was a great interpretation of a unique style and this is just... not that. I don't even remember a single moment from it
23RX Bandits
Gemini, Her Majesty

3.0. Really hoping this one grows on me because I had such high hopes but it just simply isn't that interesting. STARGAZEEEEERRRRRRRRR
22Secret Band
Secret Band

3.0. Went a bit back and forth between a 3 and 3.5 on this one, some great moments and #messedgod ensure that this is enjoyable but never quite exceptional. except of course for ASS ASS ASS ASS
21Cynic
Kindly Bent to Free Us

3.5. Admittedly this grew off me but I still like it a lot more than I feel it gets credit for, also Jac made me write that review the crafty bastard. AN EXTREMELY YANG SOLUTION
20Crosses
Crosses

3.5. This was pretty much pointless but I'm glad it happened because Bitches Brew is a fucking tune and a half. SAY SOMETHING PRAY FOR SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING PRAY FOR SOMETHING
19Manic Street Preachers
Futurology

3.5. Not quite the comeback I'd been led to believe, although some tracks are really top notch, the title track and Let's Go To War make me wonder how far away from Lifeblood they've really come.
18Jack White
Lazaretto

3.5. Literally all about that title track. No but some tracks on here pleasantly surprised me, especially the kinda beautiful Entitlement, but it still has some consistency issues. JUST LIKE THAT BLACK BAT LICORICE
17Coldplay
Ghost Stories

3.5. Goes up and down from some of the best songs they've written since.. well ever to something that would fit on X&Y. Midnight is still a probable AOTY contender. ooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOAHHHHHHHHHH leave a light, a light on
16United Nations
The Next Four Years

3.5. Not nearly as good as either of their previous releases and actually kinda a letdown but still pretty enjoyable. RIP Thursday.
15Musk Ox
Woodfall

4.0. Shoutout to Cap and Judio for alerting the Sput-hype train to stop in at this station, this is a gem that probably would've gone unnoticed otherwise. Really gorgeous.
14Have A Nice Life
The Unnatural World

4.0. Emotional, Beautiful, Evocative, Otherworldly... not as good as Deathconsciousness. IS THIS WHAT ITS LIKE??? IS THIS WHAT ITS GOING TO BE LIKE???
13Swans
To Be Kind

4.0. I think I just don't get Swans like y'all, this is a great album but way too self-indulgent in places and Gira's vocals are laughably bad but thankfully that doesn't kill his superb musicianship.
12Opeth
Pale Communion

4.0. THE SCREAMS ARE BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK
11Anberlin
Lowborn

4.0. Such a surprise. The end of a career by a band who, in my opinion, never quite managed to make an album full of consistently good songs despite their obvious talent, and they finish off with probably their best album yet. Birds of Prey, Dissenter, We Are Destroyer, Hearing Voices, Velvet Covered Brick are all top-notch tunes. and it all is the saaaaaaaaaaaaame
10Anathema
Distant Satellites

4.0. A bit samey, fairly repetitive, and basically what I've come to expect of Anathema to a T in the first half, but the second half blew me away. The title track is one of the most gorgeous pieces of music they've written. so let it take me awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy
9Passenger (UK)
Whispers

4.0. Not a Sputnik kinda guy obviously but fuck me Scare Away the Dark is exceptional. We're all slowly dying in front of FUCKING COMPUTERS
8 The Hotelier
Home Like NoPlace is There

4.0. Lol Treborcore but this is actually really good Treborcore and Dendron is the most heart-wrenching song in a good fucking while. MAN I'M SORRY EVERY DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY
7Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties
We Don't Have Each Other

4.5. "its no aaron west" - yaknips
6Keaton Henson
Romantic Works

4.5. Definitely no Aaron West but fucking beautiful this dude is one of the most promising talents in modern music
5Closure in Moscow
Pink Lemonade

4.5. "this is such a sexy album holy mother of" - fti and who the fuck is going to argue with fti? THIS HEY-UHH IS-UHH YO TECH-UHH COMMUNION-UHHH
4Casualties of Cool
Casualties of Cool

4.5. Devin is a wizard who never disappoints no matter what random area of the musical spectrum his muse might take him. Not to mention Che's vocals are just outstandingly good. I want to crash on your shoooooooooore
3The Antlers
Familiars

4.5. Just achingly gorgeous in every way, Silberman just seems to get more exceptional as his career goes on and he's learnt to utilise the talents of his bandmembers better along the way. Parade, Palace, Intruders, what else needs to be said? WE FIND TWO SEATS IN THE BACK OF A CAR IN AN EMPTY PARKING LOT WHERE ALL OUR BRIDGES ARE ABANDONED AND THE COPS HAVE FORGOT
2 Dot Hacker
How's Your Process (Work)

5.0. Not like I was expecting anything else from my idols, but fuck it, this is exceptional. Nothing on these six tracks is anything short of fantastic musically, emotionally and atmospherically, whatever the fuck that means. I can see Play being another 5 without a shadow of a doubt. You'll never measure up up up and away way beyond anywhere you think you'll be able to reach higher everything is about getting higher farther, faster, bigger, better way bigger than you'll ever be you tiny little swine offer nothing kind to anyone should've never been not good enough look at that it's awful remarks my words stockpile short fuse fusillade combustion bust open comparison tell me who's fortune you want.
1 Pink Floyd
The Endless River

Not out yet but AOTY duh
