06.02.14 | @Calc The brain is your worst enemy in these situations dude. Speaking from experience, if you feel a
tiny bit nervous about god knows what, such as getting chest pains from it, odds are that will happen.
You could think you're getting these types of things just by worrying about getting them too much.
Then the anxiety escalates to being nervous about shit that has nothing to do with with initially
starting the attack in the first place. This is how it works for me at least. And simply not worrying
or thinking about the symptoms you get is easier said than done. |
GmemberKills
06.02.14 | They make certain types of tea and vitamins you can take that really help a ton. Exercise is good too.
It mainly Really helps just to try and keep your mind occupied with something, and if you feel at attack coming on try and get some fresh air or take you a nice hot shower. All those things should help a alot.
Hopefully things get better |

06.02.14 | i've dealt with pretty severe anxiety attacks in conjunction with clinical depression. it sucks. landed in the er once. ended up on paxil but all it did was make me gain weight and go through horrible withdrawals when i tried quitting several times before finally succeeding.

you have to keep upping the dosage to make it work and quitting is horrible. anyone who's tried that before knows about "the jolts" (not to mention being super irritable and moody). and nobody's even brought up the sexual side effects, which, given the fact that we're on sputnik, isn't surprising.
as someone who was on ssri's for 5 years, i wouldn't recommend them. sometimes the side effects are worse than what's being treated. |

DatBeefPudding
06.02.14 | ok so here's what i know from what i've learned and also experienced:
anything you do in response to your anxiety WILL become a weak habit. things like grounding and meditating are fantastic for this. going for a run, breathing exercises (count to 4 breathe in, count to 4 breathe out) other calming, focusing things.
drinking, smoking weed, anything else, will most likely numb you for awhile but then will cause you to need them to cope, and you'll be absolute shit at dealing with it on your own.
do what you know is right for your body, for the mind and the body are connected. if you treat your body like shit, then it'll run like shit. if you treat your body well, then it'll have an easier time at dealing with either a mental illness or alleviating the symptoms altogether. and by deal i mean ease the symptoms so that it's quite manageable with/without medication |
Calc
06.02.14 | "not sure what you mean by this. please elaborate. are you saying this as someone who's dealt with them before?"
I've never experienced it, never even felt close to experiencing anything close to it. So unless it's genetic I'm completely ignant of this phenomenon, kinda like the way I feel about depression. |
DatBeefPudding
06.02.14 | as you can see from the comments, most people who are most likely dealing with it successfully would be the ones who practice healthy habitual stuff.
running, breathing exercises, meditation, etc. all healthy things that promote well-being.
smoking (nicotine/tobacco,marijuana,etc), drinking, isolation/withdrawl, angry emotional projections (passive aggressiveness, and just plain aggressiveness) or other substances, etc, will increase the amount of debilitating symptoms such as in your case: anxiety |

for me personally, the attacks were always very physical (even though "it's all in your head"). my chest would tighten up, my heart rate soared, and my palms would get all clammy. i was also always overcome with a feeling of immense doom (can't remember how many times i told myself "i'm going to die." one time i even wrote a quick goodbye letter to my family because i was that convinced that i was gonna die). what made things much worse is that i'd immediately log onto web.md, check my symptoms and be like "oh fuck i'm having a heart attack!" i'm assuming the other ppl in this thread who ended up going to the hospital felt similarly. |
DatBeefPudding
06.02.14 | "that's why you don't stop. and if exercise counts as "dealing with it on your own" then why don't drugs/alcohol?"
do i really have to explain why substances aren't good for your brain in terms of handling anxiety?
that's all i did for the past 4 years and trust me on this, it isn't what your body needs to deal with anxiety or depression. it may for a while work great (why else did i, for 4 years?), but you will eventually need to either up the dosage, and/or frequency depending on severity of symptoms, and it will also start to add up in terms of physical costs (smoking ANYTHING isn't good for your lungs and that's not disputable) and financial costs. |
Trebor.
06.02.14 | So you're saying I shouldn't be getting drunk and or high every night? |
demigod!
06.02.14 | medications can be extremely helpful if theyre prescribed for ailments you actually have, and are used correctly. i know this from experience.
just gotta figure if its worth the side effects i guess |
DatBeefPudding
06.02.14 | exactly. and if you have anxiety every night and that's how you've been dealing with it for the
longest time... you can see how a habit can develop.
the same goes for benzos, if you have an attack and then pop an ativan or whatever you're using,
you'll
have to keep increasing the dosage as tolerance builds up.
not sure if you were sarcastic or not but whatever i find mental health to be extremely important
and
is not widely taught in grade schools, technical schools, or even colleges/universities (depending
on

The subsequent three months was a blur of heart disease paranoia, barely leaving the house, and becoming generally anxious about a bevy of other pointless shit. Even quit smoking, herb and drinking coffee for about a month. Haven't really had that many panic attacks since that period, but developed depression/anxiety that took me years to figure out/control. The best thing to do is exercise and use biofeedback with irrational thoughts. Try to stay away from "medicine", because it's all shit unless you're severely ill. |

06.04.14 | Engaging another part of the brain worked for me. Start describing something within sight, curtains, trees or whatever, and do it in minute detail. Focus on that as much as possible and don't try to make the attack itself go away. Sounds like nonsense but it works. Got the advice from the mental health team in my town. Prevention is also a very good idea, and has given me the all clear for some time now. I got shoehorned into a mindfulness class, expected nothing, turned out to be awesome.
