SCREAM!
04.04.14 | So a lot of you guys saw this match up coming (Frip even predicted the album matchups) so here it is.
I'm gonna start us off with an unpopular opinion and vote Gentle Giant on all three. |
mandan
04.04.14 | I knew it was gonna be these two. |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | Gonna have to go 3-0 Genesis |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
Selling England (had to think about this one)
The Lamb |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.04.14 | Octopus
Selling England
Free Hand |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | Actually picking Selling England over Glass House wasn't that difficult, just not as easy as the other two.
Don't think I'll ever like Gentle Giant anywhere near a much as the other big prog bands. |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | GG aren't really a big prog band. They're just the biggest lesser known one |
manosg
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
Selling England
The Lamb |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | @Nero: Well yeah but still, they're easily my least favourite out of the bands that are considered to be big or among the bigger lesser known ones. |
mandan
04.04.14 | Yes is easily my least fave big 70's prog band. |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | Yes are top 4 for me |
manosg
04.04.14 | Definitely top 4 maybe top 3. |
mandan
04.04.14 | @Nero and manosg: if you were to pick a least fave big 70's prog band, which would it be? |
emester
04.04.14 | octopus
selling england
free hand |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | Probably Jethro Tull |
BreakerdeGodot
04.04.14 | genesis all three |
manosg
04.04.14 | @danny
I will get hunt and skinned alive for this but Rush. |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | My least favourite would probably be genesis actually. There's just something about Phil Collins that doesn't click with me |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | Yeah Genesis aren't one of my faves either |
mandan
04.04.14 | Feels great hearing these confessions actually.
At least we can understand each other more. |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | "My least favourite would probably be genesis actually. There's just something about Phil Collins that doesn't click with me"
You mean his drumming (which is fucking great btw) bothers you enough not to like Gabriel era-Genesis? |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | @Nero. Yet you voted genesis on all 3? :p |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | @Jamie doesn't he sing a lot even on Gabriel era? If not I've somehow gotten them confused and I guess that would mean I dont care for Gabriel either |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | I still like them obviously, just not as much as Rush, KC, Floyd, Yes and Camel |
KILL
04.04.14 | all genesis baby |
mandan
04.04.14 | What I dislike about Yes: the vocals irk me after a while, can't really connect with their music as much as with other prog bands.
manosg, I'd love to hear what aspects of Rush rub you the wrong way, if any. |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | Yes have a certain magic the other bands lack. |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | "@Jamie doesn't he sing a lot even on Gabriel era? If not I've somehow gotten them confused and I guess that would mean I dont care for Gabriel either"
Aside from his drumming he didn't contribute much at all during Gabriel era. He sung lead vocals on like 2 songs from that era and provided backing vocals on some others but that's about it. He was probably the least involved in terms of song writing during that period too. |
mandan
04.04.14 | Nero, what rubs you the wrong way, if anything, about Tull? |
menawati
04.04.14 | octopus
england
lamb |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | I can't really connect (emotionally) with Yes that much either, danny. For me that has nothing to do with Anderson's vocals though. |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | Nothing does, I just prefer the other bands. It might be a more stylistic thing |
KILL
04.04.14 | fuck emotions yes is about rockin hard and true |
menawati
04.04.14 | interesting you guys say that because their music doesnt affect me emotionally either, sort of cold and detached whereas genesis are more intimate and slightly disturbing |
mandan
04.04.14 | This is gold. Keep it up guys, I wanna hear more "I dislike x about x band" type confessions. |
zakalwe
04.04.14 | Genesis harping on about lawn mowers, Yes climbing out of UFOs.
Tull rocks and can flute it up like no other.
|
menawati
04.04.14 | didnt say dislike, cold and detached and technical is good if you are in the mood for it |
mandan
04.04.14 | mena, which would you say is your least fave big 70's prog band? |
menawati
04.04.14 | ELP |
mandan
04.04.14 | Interesting. What rubs you the worng way about ELP, if anything? |
menawati
04.04.14 | not a lot just you said least favourite, i still love some of their stuff before they went silly |
NeroCorleone80
04.04.14 | This thread has basically turned into a danny questionnaire |
mandan
04.04.14 | Just wanted to know a bit more about the dislikes of my fellow users ;). |
mandan
04.04.14 | Jethro seems to like everything prog though, dunno if he has a least fave. |
fallenbird
04.04.14 | All three go to Genesis |
Friday13th
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
Selling England
Lamb (though I will say "On Reflection" is my favorite song out of those two albums) |
MeatSalad
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
Glass house
Lamb |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | "fuck emotions yes is about rockin hard and true"
Yeah they rock hard no doubt hard but being able connect to the music in addition to that makes bands like Tull and Genesis a lot more appealing to me. |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | "interesting you guys say that because their music doesnt affect me emotionally either, sort of cold and detached whereas genesis are more intimate and slightly disturbing"
Agreed. I'd say this goes for Gentile Giant too (even more than it does for Yes actually). |
mandan
04.04.14 | Hence why we can't all agree, we all have different taste. Different people look for different things in music. For one, I like GG more than Yes, I wouldn't quite say they're my fave prog band, but at least GG entertains me, whereas listening to Yes can feel a bit like a drug overdose for me. But that's my opinion, and everyone has a different opinion. |
menawati
04.04.14 | gg even more so aye, but floyd gives deep feels and tull are like a little cute maid dressed in a country squire outfit giving you cuddles by the fire over a cup of tea |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | Tull, Genesis and Floyd are way ahead of other prog bands for me because of the fact that I can connect with their music more. |
mandan
04.04.14 | If I had a gun to my forehead and had to pick 3 classic prog bands I'd stick with, they'd prob be Floyd, Rush and Camel. Genesis is pretty close though. |
BMDrummer
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
In a Glass House
Lamb Lies Down on Broadway |
Greem
04.04.14 | Genesis Genesis Genesis |
Greem
04.04.14 | You'd better put Van der Graaf |
KILL
04.04.14 | they'll get raped no point |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | No more new bands coming. Next wave will be the winners of the different sections going up against each other. I could've done ELP vs VdGG but I don't think the latter is well enough known on here |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | Brain Salad Surgery isn't even ELP's best though. |
TheCrocodile
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
Selling
Free Hand
ELP's debut is the best. |
fallenbird
04.04.14 | Brain Salad Surgery was soo good |
Onirium
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
Selling England
Free Hand
ELP vs Supertramp would've been a good match up. |
Friday13th
04.04.14 | I love Supertramp but they're just barely prog. Even Crime of the Century is like commercial Pink Floyd. I'd like to see VDGG and ELP go head to head. |
TheSpaceMan
04.04.14 | Octopus (easily)
In a Glass House (easily)
Lamb (dont know either album well but Lamb has huge merits so...) |
TheSpaceMan
04.04.14 | "ELP's debut is the best"
yeah its also the only one worth listen to imo, Tarkus and Brain Salad come close |
Onirium
04.04.14 | Why aren't Harmonium considered a classic prog band? I mean, they're much better than Rush imo. |
mandan
04.04.14 | Why do more people know about Metallica than Testament? Why do more people know about Led Zeppelin than Uriah Heep?
I think that answers your question. |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | Are you implying Uriah Heep are better than Zeppelin? |
JaySpiral
04.04.14 | Foxtrot
Selling England
Free Hand |
mandan
04.05.14 | ^^No. I mean that bands considered classics are considered as such because of fame. |
Onirium
04.05.14 | ^I get your point, but I think there is more than only fame for a band to be considered classic.
Actually, Gentle Giant are really not that famous, you know. Still, they're considered classics. For example, Sigur Ros and Godspeed are classics and are not famous at all. |
mandan
04.05.14 | Cult classics more than anything.
Only hardcore progheads know about GG. |
Jethro42
04.05.14 | Foxtrot
Selling England
The Lamb
Don't get me wrong, I like very much Gentle Giant, but I think they can't compete with Genesis, and they dont have the same fanbase neither. |
SCREAM!
04.05.14 | My head knew GG didn't have much of a chance against Genesis, but my heart was hoping they'd beat the odds at least with Free Hand. Isn't looking good though |
mandan
04.05.14 | Here goes nothing:
Foxtrot
SEbtP
Free Hand |
Hovse
04.05.14 | Genesis for all 3 |
SCREAM!
04.05.14 | techinically too late but genesis won all 3 anyway
I am disappoint |
NeroCorleone80
04.05.14 | GG would'nt have a chance no matter who they were up against |
mandan
04.05.14 | The Genesis fanbase is strong on the site.
But Floyd has prob the biggest fanbase, they seem to get bumped the most 'round here. |
zakalwe
04.05.14 | Floyd are the purveyors of experimental, thematic rock.
Genesis for me are a bit shit. |
mandan
04.05.14 | Well you like Floyd and KC zak, so it's all good. |
zakalwe
04.05.14 | Jade Warrior dude. |
mandan
04.05.14 | Never checked 'em bro. |
adr
04.05.14 | Dream Theater vs Porcupine Tree next xD |

04.05.14 | Of course. What makes you think I don't? |

SCREAM!
04.05.14 | @jokine you aren't the only one (check the very first comment on here and you'll see) unfortunately the voting is closed on all the sections of wave 1. I'll have something for wave 2 up shortly when I have a few minutes to sit down and write it |
mandan
04.05.14 | Floyd vs. KC should be a tight run. |
