20 Favorite King Crimson Songs

I played Red for my sister this morning while driving. She's cool so she didn't exactly complain, but she asked, "So like, how famous is this King Crimson?" My answer was "They're more infamous than famous in pop culture. However, you just mention Robert Fripp on sputnikmusic.com and you instantly boost your virtual cred and get 100+ comments." Prog ain't dead yet.
20King Crimson
Lizard

"Cirkus" - While some of the other tracks can get a bit too weird and noodly, this one still has enough elements of classic ITCOTCK to be both interesting and enjoyable.
19King Crimson
Discipline

"Frame By Frame" - Probably the best example of New Wave meeting prog outside of Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
18 King Crimson
Larks' Tongues in Aspic

"Easy Money" - Great stomping groove on this one.
17King Crimson
In the Wake of Poseidon

"Cadence and Cascade" - This song makes you realize that other guy isn't actually that bad of a singer...when he tries.
16King Crimson
Islands

"Islands" - This is probably the purest combination of classical and jazz the band ever came up with.
15King Crimson
Starless and Bible Black

"The Great Deceiver" - Probably the closest they came to capturing the explosive energy of "Schizoid Man." Silly lyrics though.
14 King Crimson
Larks' Tongues in Aspic

"Exiles" - Great tune. Another Crimson song that will haunt you with its beauty.
13King Crimson
Lizard

"Lizard" - Crimson's multi-suite epic is a stunning highlight that even boasts a guest appearance by Jon Anderson! Too bad that other guy sings most of it. The "Bolero" section has a great melody.
12King Crimson
Red

"Fallen Angel" - The "ballad" off Red shows off John Wetton's voice and gets pretty heavy too. "Faaaaaallen AAAAAAAngel!"
11King Crimson
Starless and Bible Black

"Fracture" - A nice long instrumental that closes the album with about one third the awesomeness of Starless. That's a lot of awesomeness.
10 King Crimson
Larks' Tongues in Aspic

"Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II" - Though nothing like the first part, this one is more of a guitar driven heavy prog jam that is quite awesome in its own right. The DT cover was my introduction to KC :)
9 King Crimson
Larks' Tongues in Aspic

"Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part I" - So many sounds...
8King Crimson
Discipline

"Elephant Talk" - A very uncharacteristic track that shows Crimson at their quirkiest and most cynical. The post modern poetry is actually quite cool on paper, and that funky riff is just fantastic.
7King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

"In the Court of the Crimson King" - The eerie, antique, and yet ageless title track of Crimson's debut. Only reason it's not higher is I never got why it seems to end with a bang and then starts up again only to fade out.
6King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

"I Talk to the Wind" - Very pretty little ballad that has a wonderfully evocative chorus and captivating flute playing.
5King Crimson
Red

"One More Red Nightmare" - A continuation of "Red" with Wetton singing and some Jazzy jams.
4King Crimson
Red

"Red" - Wicked instrumental. Is it weird to call it grungy? Heavy whole tone riffs, Batman!
3King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

"Epitaph" - Everything in this song--the lyrics, the singing, the instrumentation--is just so powerful, beautiful and yet foreboding.
2King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

"21st Century Schizoid Man" - Jazz Fusion/prog/metal before any of those individual styles were established. I just can't imagine still having a face after hearing it for the first time in 1969.
1King Crimson
Red

"Starless" - Best song ever. Haunting guitar + classic mellotron + John Wetton in his prime + bass riff from hell + 13/8 time drumming by Bruford + jazz freakout + most epic reprise of the original theme possible = pinnacle of music :D
