| Who Are The Greatest Metal Bands??
Ok. So the ranking criteria: Rating out of 10 for originality and influence, rrating out of 10 for overall discog, number of essential albums, and rating rout of 5 for longevity | 8 | | Megadeth Rust in Peace
CBF doing another one but Overall is 25 | 7 | | Slayer Reign in Blood
Originality: 8
Took thrash and made it way more agressive and intense, but still relied heavily on a pre-existing genre
Infuence: 8.5
Very influential on early DM bands because of their intense style
Overall Discog: 3.9, with 5 essentials
Great opening run, maybe not as many outright classics as death, maiden, sabbath, but a very consistent and excellent run
of records.
Longevity: 3.25
Had a dip in form but still released respectable records unlike others
Overall: 29.65 | 6 | | Metallica Ride the Lighting
Originality: 9
Pretty much the first true thrash band
Influence:
Impossible to count the amount of bands that credit Metallica. I mean they
influenced Trivium guys. TRIVIUM
Overall Discog: 4, with 4 essentials (you know i know moving on)
Great early run, but the kind of cool but obviously less metal self titled, and, well you know the rest... :/
Longevity: 2.5
duh
Overall: 29.5 | 5 | | Opeth Still Life
Originality: 9
The influence of the early death metal bands is there, but Opeth really defined the
progressive death metal sound
influence: 7
Very influential in the more progressive side of extreme metal, but alas that is a
fairly small genre
Overall Discography: 5/5, with 6 essentials
Perhaps excluding heritage, its brilliantly consistent discography that has bounties
of excellence
Longevity: 5
As stated, its a brilliant discog. Almost 20 years of amazing records
Overall: 31.5 | 4 | | Judas Priest Painkiller
Originality: 9
Heavier than sabbath and more metallic than maiden. Priest had their own niche
Influence: 8
Very influential early on but loses out in the modern era to maiden and death
Overall Discography: 4.5/5, with 7 essentials (Sad wings, Stained class, sin after
sin, british steel, screaming, defenders, painkiller)
Longevity: 4
releasing what many consider their opus 16 years after their debut says it all
Overall: 32.75 | 3 | | Black Sabbath Paranoid
Originality:10
Duh invented the fucking genre
Influence: 10
Duh invented the fucking genre
Overall Discography: 4.75, with 6 essentials (everything up to sabotage and heaven
and hell)
Longevity: 3
Ruled for the early years and made a comeback with heaven and hell and mob rules,
but all in all they burned out quickly.
Overall: 33.50 | 2 | | Death Symbolic
Originality: 9
Influenced greatly by bands like slayer and possessed, but came into their own and
a widely known as the first true death metal band
Influence:10
It Death
Overall Discography: 5/5, with 6 essentials (everything cept spiritual)
Just got better. Easily the best discog in death metal
Longevity:4.5
Never put a foot wrong, yet weren't really around long enough to gain the full 5/5
Overall: 35 | 1 | | Iron Maiden Powerslave
Originality: 9
Yes the heavy metal style had been done before by judas and sabbath mainly, but
Maiden's power metalish, melodic and epic traits make them a very unique and
distinguishable band
Influence: 9
Very influential in the formation of power metal and melodeath, as well as countless
other bands
Discography overall: 5/5-Number of Essentials=8 (First 7 and brave new world)
yes there were slumps, but with the quality and quantity already there, not many
bands can touch them
Longevity= 4.5
Not only did they have a stretch of 10 years where everything they touched turned
to gold, but following the great Brave new world, they have returned for a second
wind releasing some great albums with classic songs e.g paschendale, when the
wild wwind blows
Overall: 35 | |

03.15.13 | Yeh true but it has to be a factor. I forgot to rank the discography out of 10, rather than 5 :/

03.15.13 | Periphery | OmairSh
03.15.13 | I understand why you'd include the bands influence as part of your rating criteria, but I don't think it's necessary. It should be solely based on the quality of the bands work. | BigPleb
