Buzzkillr
02.14.13 | you're sort of leaving out the part where all three storylines are connected
and yeah it's a lot more complex than that, oh and the themes from the movie are essentially separate from the storyline |

02.14.13 | "No Country For Old Men is the Coen Brothers' best film"
Actually, I like A Serious Man the most. |
GringoSuave89
02.14.13 | Not in an ironic way, but The Big Lebowski will always be my favorite. O Brother Where Art Thou is third. |

TWBB is better though |

02.14.13 | Fargo and The Big Lebowski come pretty close but apart from that I can't really think of any other Coen brother's movies that are close to matching it |
WeepingBanana
02.14.13 | Barton Fink, Raising Arizona, O Brother Where Art Thou (barely)
hell, i think i liked True Grit more than No Country tbh |

MichaelSnoxall
02.14.13 | Yeah, No Country For Old Men was a fantastic book and film. Cormac McCarthy is a literary genius. |
tommygun
02.14.13 | yeah he rules I've read this and the road both amazing
got a copy of blood meridian somewhere I keep forgetting to read |
MichaelSnoxall
02.14.13 | Blood Meridian is a dense read, I had to read each chapter twice. |

02.14.13 | better make sure I'm in the right frame of mind to concentrate hard then |
Trebor17
02.14.13 | I didn't get Michael Clayton but I'm not going to make a list about it |
MichaelSnoxall
02.14.13 | Yeah, you need to read hard, because if you go in for a casual read, like 90% of what happened in the chapter will just fly right over your head. My copy has these cool chapter breakdowns to give an idea of what happened and it helped me understand how the writing style worked. |
tommygun
02.14.13 | ok sweet thanks for the heads up |
clercqie
02.15.13 | "My copy has these cool chapter breakdowns to give an idea of what happened and it helped me understand how the writing style worked. "
So that totally defeats the purpose of figuring out a book's thematics on your own / having a personal take on a work. |
GringoSuave89
02.17.13 | Woah woah, I loved Michael Clayton. |
MichaelSnoxall
02.17.13 | "So that totally defeats the purpose of figuring out a book's thematics on your own / having a personal take on a work."
How can I have a personal take on a scene where indians come and slaughter a bunch of white men?
"like yeah, I interpreted that scene as god punch a donkey in the muzzle"
The chapter breakdowns just help you understand everything that happened in the chapter, because he writes so dense that it's hard to understand. He doesn't use grammar and everything happens so fast it's hard to grasp. Those chapter breakdowns help you understand the writing style. They helped me enjoy the book a lot more. |
Strider
02.17.13 | I shat myself when I saw Javier Bardem's performance in that movie |
RickySpanish
02.17.13 | The movie is brilliant, and one of the rare occasions the bad guy wins (or gets away
atleast)...unlike the movie End of Watch which was good til a gay ass shit dumb ending. |
Insurrection
02.17.13 | Just saw this movie yesterday actually. Javier Bardem was brilliant |
andcas
02.17.13 | does Javier Bardem's character kill the wife? I can never figure that out. |

02.17.13 | "notice I say "film" instead of "movie"? is because it's that fucking good"
this is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever read in my entire life. And I read all the shit I write on here.
anyway I think Zodiac and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford are the two best american films of 2007. I do like NCFOM and TWBB just fine but I don't like like them. |
andcas
02.17.13 | The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a cinematic masterpiece that never gets talked about or
the praise it deserves. |
GringoSuave89
02.17.13 | It's implied she's dead. He checks his boots as he leaves the room, which makes me think he's checking for blood. Captive bolt pictures are messy shit. |
GringoSuave89
02.17.13 | The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is flawless. |

02.18.13 | So, this list is a joke, and you guys really need to read The Road. It's fantastic, probably a more compelling storyline and equally brilliant writing. Thematically it's a little more straightforward but in terms of everything else, I found it to be a cut above No Country. |
tommygun
02.18.13 | yeah he definitely kills the wife they show him checking his boots for blood rather than showing it on screen (can't
remember how they handle it in the book) -- I mean even llewellyn gets killed off screen. the road is right up there with
it, book is road > no country, vice versa for movie. that said the road movie ruled and viggo mortensen was fantastic in it |
GringoSuave89
02.18.13 | In the book, she calls wrong. |

05.03.13 | The Road is a slightly better book but NCFOM is some of McCarthy's finest work. |
