"stupid Hipster"

"They were better before they sold out" -- Bands that make me sound like a stereotypical hipster douche when "normal" people ask me if I like them.
1Minus The Bear
Infinity Overhead

My inspiration for this list: Minus The Bear's 2012 album. "Planet of Ice" is one of
the records that first got me interested in indie rock at all, and I'll always see it as
a classic. The rest of their work is super average in my opinion, especially their last
two LPs. "Album X is the only worthwhile thing this band ever did."
2Muse
The 2nd Law

Never in the history of music has a promising rock band gone from producing great
music like on Origin of Symmetry, to the absolute shit of their last two LPs, so
quickly. "They were better before they sold out"
3Red Hot Chili Peppers
Californication

My favourite band growing up -- Californication was the first album I ever bought
myself that wasn't complete radio-pop garbage. I've outgrown them, and don't
care for their new stuff (though Grade 12 nostalgia keeps me clinging to Stadium
Arcadium). With John Frusciante gone for good this time, I officially no longer
consider myself to be a fan of RHCP. "They were better when everyone was taking
heroin."
4Autechre
Tri Repetae

Tri Repetae is, all things considered, probably my favourite electronic album. Most
of the band's work up until the late 90s was really, really fucking good. But then
something happened, they started huffing paint fumes or something, but ever since
then, their music is beatless and really hard for me to get into. "I only like their old
stuff."
5Hop Along
Get Disowned

This is, in my opinion, one of the best albums of 2012, but whenever this band gets
brought up, I can't help but mention how Hop Along, Queen Anslies is better (the
lead singer's solo project, which she adapted to form this band). I love both band's
music to death, but still prefer to quirkier solo stuff. "Her solo music is better."
6Modest Mouse
The Lonesome Crowded West

Band produces two of the best indie rock albums ever, then proceeds to make
plenty of decent songs that never come close to touching their top tier. "Their new
stuff is boring."
7Mono
For My Parents

I'm having a hard time explaining why I love Hymn to The Immortal Wind so much,
but can't jam to For My Parents at all. I just feel like they've done it all before, but
so much better and with such a great urgent vibe to it, whereas now it just sounds
watered down, mundane. "Their new album sucks."
8Mother Mother
O My Heart

I've seen this local band grow over the years, from playing shitty bars with 12
people, to headlining cross-Canada tours with thousands of adoring fans. Their
music has been declining ever since they began to get exposure, though it's still
fun. "I liked these guys before they were big" and also "Album X is the only
worthwhile thing this band ever did."
9The Ascent of Everest
How Lonely Sits the City

First album: amazing, one of my favourite post-rock jams. New album: boring,
obvious gybe worship (which is fine, but this is very poorly executed). "[pick one]"
10The Mountain Goats
Beautiful Rat Sunset

Probably my favourite band, and while their studio LPs since 2000 have been
justifiably met with lots of praise, their older, lo fi stuff is so so sooooo underrated.
Their best album is a lo-fi masterpiece, and the cassette stuff has virtually no
votes here (I added half the discog to the database). "Have you even HEARD
Transmissions to Horace?"
11The Shins
Oh, Inverted World

Their first album is so so so much better than any of their others. The new LP
sucks donkey dick. Great live band though. "Album X is the only worthwhile thing
this band ever did."
12Billy Talent
Billy Talent

Huge high school nostalgia band for me that has become watered-down,
predictable, and boring since Billy Talent II. "Their older stuff is better."
13Skrillex
Bangarang

I hate talking about Skrillex with my friends. I like his music (or most of it) but it's
so frustrating that people think he is the KING OF DUBSTEP. 90% of music fans in
North America have little to no knowledge of electronic music, and it's hard to not
sound like a complete cunt when trying to explain why Skrillex isn't revolutionary,
like, at all. "This isn't REAL dubstep, most of it is electro anyway!"
14Mumford and Sons
Sigh No More

I still defend this band against people that say they're the CANCER OF THE MUSIC
INDUSTRY because like, woah, chill out. However, this band legitimately lets the
fame get to their head. I liked Sigh No More quite a bit before it exploded, then, a
year later, apparently everybody loves the shit out of it, and the band are cocky
douches now. I saw them at Sasquatch 2010 and they were humble people and
very adoring of their fans. Then, I watched the Coachella 2011 set (online) and,
um, ok. First of all, they were all wasted and butchering their songs. Second, they
all clearly think they're hot shit now, especially the banjo player (who was shirtless
and airhumping the large crowd for almost the entire set). Their music has grown
off me, and their second LP shows that they're perfectly content to milk this fat
cash-cow for as long as they can. "I liked them before they were big" and "they
were better before they sold out."
15 Deadmau5
> album title goes here

Much of what I said about Skrillex applies here, but also, this guy's music has taken
a massive dive in quality. This is electronic music for people who know shit all about
electronic music in general (though it's not terrible). "His new album sucks" and a
bit of "this is average compared to most of his European peers!"
