| "stupid Hipster"
"They were better before they sold out" -- Bands that make me sound like
a stereotypical hipster douche when "normal" people ask me if I like them. | 1 | | Minus The Bear Infinity Overhead
My inspiration for this list: Minus The Bear's 2012 album. "Planet of Ice" is one of
the records that first got me interested in indie rock at all, and I'll always see it as
a classic. The rest of their work is super average in my opinion, especially their last
two LPs. "Album X is the only worthwhile thing this band ever did." | 2 | | Muse The 2nd Law
Never in the history of music has a promising rock band gone from producing great
music like on Origin of Symmetry, to the absolute shit of their last two LPs, so
quickly. "They were better before they sold out" | 3 | | Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication
My favourite band growing up -- Californication was the first album I ever bought
myself that wasn't complete radio-pop garbage. I've outgrown them, and don't
care for their new stuff (though Grade 12 nostalgia keeps me clinging to Stadium
Arcadium). With John Frusciante gone for good this time, I officially no longer
consider myself to be a fan of RHCP. "They were better when everyone was taking
heroin." | 4 | | Autechre Tri Repetae
Tri Repetae is, all things considered, probably my favourite electronic album. Most
of the band's work up until the late 90s was really, really fucking good. But then
something happened, they started huffing paint fumes or something, but ever since
then, their music is beatless and really hard for me to get into. "I only like their old
stuff." | 5 | | Hop Along Get Disowned
This is, in my opinion, one of the best albums of 2012, but whenever this band gets
brought up, I can't help but mention how Hop Along, Queen Anslies is better (the
lead singer's solo project, which she adapted to form this band). I love both band's
music to death, but still prefer to quirkier solo stuff. "Her solo music is better." | 6 | | Modest Mouse The Lonesome Crowded West
Band produces two of the best indie rock albums ever, then proceeds to make
plenty of decent songs that never come close to touching their top tier. "Their new
stuff is boring." | 7 | | Mono For My Parents
I'm having a hard time explaining why I love Hymn to The Immortal Wind so much,
but can't jam to For My Parents at all. I just feel like they've done it all before, but
so much better and with such a great urgent vibe to it, whereas now it just sounds
watered down, mundane. "Their new album sucks." | 8 | | Mother Mother O My Heart
I've seen this local band grow over the years, from playing shitty bars with 12
people, to headlining cross-Canada tours with thousands of adoring fans. Their
music has been declining ever since they began to get exposure, though it's still
fun. "I liked these guys before they were big" and also "Album X is the only
worthwhile thing this band ever did." | 9 | | The Ascent of Everest How Lonely Sits the City
First album: amazing, one of my favourite post-rock jams. New album: boring,
obvious gybe worship (which is fine, but this is very poorly executed). "[pick one]" | 10 | | The Mountain Goats Beautiful Rat Sunset
Probably my favourite band, and while their studio LPs since 2000 have been
justifiably met with lots of praise, their older, lo fi stuff is so so sooooo underrated.
Their best album is a lo-fi masterpiece, and the cassette stuff has virtually no
votes here (I added half the discog to the database). "Have you even HEARD
Transmissions to Horace?" | 11 | | The Shins Oh, Inverted World
Their first album is so so so much better than any of their others. The new LP
sucks donkey dick. Great live band though. "Album X is the only worthwhile thing
this band ever did." | 12 | | Billy Talent Billy Talent
Huge high school nostalgia band for me that has become watered-down,
predictable, and boring since Billy Talent II. "Their older stuff is better." | 13 | | Skrillex Bangarang
I hate talking about Skrillex with my friends. I like his music (or most of it) but it's
so frustrating that people think he is the KING OF DUBSTEP. 90% of music fans in
North America have little to no knowledge of electronic music, and it's hard to not
sound like a complete cunt when trying to explain why Skrillex isn't revolutionary,
like, at all. "This isn't REAL dubstep, most of it is electro anyway!" | 14 | | Mumford and Sons Sigh No More
I still defend this band against people that say they're the CANCER OF THE MUSIC
INDUSTRY because like, woah, chill out. However, this band legitimately lets the
fame get to their head. I liked Sigh No More quite a bit before it exploded, then, a
year later, apparently everybody loves the shit out of it, and the band are cocky
douches now. I saw them at Sasquatch 2010 and they were humble people and
very adoring of their fans. Then, I watched the Coachella 2011 set (online) and,
um, ok. First of all, they were all wasted and butchering their songs. Second, they
all clearly think they're hot shit now, especially the banjo player (who was shirtless
and airhumping the large crowd for almost the entire set). Their music has grown
off me, and their second LP shows that they're perfectly content to milk this fat
cash-cow for as long as they can. "I liked them before they were big" and "they
were better before they sold out." | 15 | | Deadmau5 > album title goes here
Much of what I said about Skrillex applies here, but also, this guy's music has taken
a massive dive in quality. This is electronic music for people who know shit all about
electronic music in general (though it's not terrible). "His new album sucks" and a
bit of "this is average compared to most of his European peers!" | |
Aids

""Californication was the first album I ever bought myself that wasn't complete radio-pop garbage"
Fucking lol."

billy talent sucks always | Aids
12.09.12 | what a very proggy response. talking to you is like talking to a brick wall dude.
stranger - I do like some of their more recent stuff, but the first 3 LPS >>>>> anything else they ever did | Aids
12.09.12 | most people enjoy skrillex's first two EPs at least mildly by the way (I never said i loved it, 3/5 range). Bangarang is shit. | auberginedreams
12.09.12 | i agree with 5 and 11. and i like hymn to the immortal wind but i haven't heard any of mono's newer stuff so i can't say whether it's worse. | liledman
12.09.12 | Autechre's work around the time of Confield, Draft 7.30, EP 7 and Untilted is glorious. | ThunderNeutral21
12.09.12 | ok thnx for tha update
also i didn't respond with any hostility whatsoever besides the skrillex comment, and billy talent is just a joke
im one of the few peeps on this site who cares about pre-sunset tree mg albums dude why u so anxious to discredit me | Aids
12.09.12 | yeah I know, no hostility. talking to you is still very difficult, as I'm sure most users would agree. I don't discredit you though.
I didn't know you liked The Mountain Goats. favourite 3-5 albums? | Aids
12.09.12 | liledman - I still have to hear a couple of those | ThunderNeutral21
12.09.12 | yeah mountain goats rule. not so much anymore though, i mean john is still decent but idk after like 500 released how much can you still do
1. coroners gambit (best imo)
2. all hail west texas
3. sweden
my faves when i got into mg were sunset tree and we shall all be healed, those are still rlly good but i found something rlly charming about most of the songs on sweden, criminally underrated and the best of his lo-fi yrs | Aids
12.09.12 | nice, Coroner's is definitely the best.
I mean my top 5 is all the 2000-2005 albums:
Gambit
WSABH
AHWT
Sunset Tree
Tallahassee
but I love love love Sweden, Nothing For Juice, Full Force Galesburg, and some of his super early stuff like Beautiful Rat Sunset, Transmissions to Horace, and a few others, are soooo good, and no one ever bothers checking them out. also, I think the new one is his best work behind the big 5, but that's just me I guess.
dflkghasklfg best fucking band | ThunderNeutral21
12.09.12 | best is coroner yea, but pre get lonely he would just always release great/excellent shit, with the exception of a few post sweden lo fi ones i didnt like at all
only heard t youth once | YankeeDudel
12.09.12 | a few of these could be called hipster-ish but most of them are just normal opinions. you're not going to like everything a band does. sometimes you like just one of their albums, or their early/later albums. bands change. shit happens. if people call you a hipster over that then they're lames. there are a bunch of people who legit just stop listening to a band if they get popular though and we call those people hipsters. | Aids
12.09.12 | well yeah part of my point is that "hipster" is a dumb buzzword that almost means nothing now. Everyone has certain opinions that would earn them that label - that was what I was saying (hence all the " " s). | klap
12.09.12 | wincing the night away is the best shins album silly adrian. oh inverted world is pretty wispy indie pop and thats about it | klap
12.09.12 | insert uneducated reactionary opinion here | demigod!
12.09.12 | god words can't describe how much I agree with you about Modest Mouse. Bands used to be so good, LCW is in my top 5.
also Billy Talent's first two albums are excellent poppy post-hardcore (i guess?). great stuff. | Aids
12.09.12 | wincing is second favourite, but the first half of Oh Inverted World just kills me. I know I'm weird: no one agrees with me on that but ahhhh well.
"mumford and cunts ARE the cancer of the music industry"
you're probably a fun person in real life! | MeatSalad
12.09.12 | Yeah dude mumford and sons is a big one these days | demigod!
12.09.12 | i can't stand mumford and sons but to each their own yaknow | MeatSalad
12.09.12 | I like a couple of their songs but once you've heard one you've pretty much heard them all | klap
12.09.12 | well the first half of oh inverted world is the best so id agree | Aids
12.09.12 | it reminds me of walking to work in padstow anticipating Roskilde 2012. you know how much of a sucker I am for good musical memories. and then when they played the perfect 4 songs from Oh Inverted World live, nailed it. | luschlotz
12.09.12 | fucking great list | Deviant.
12.09.12 | What in the fuck of all fucks is wrong with Autechre's last album?? | Aids
12.09.12 | ¯_(ツ)_/¯ | Ethics

12.10.12 | Crap. I say one of these things at least everyday. | mindleviticus
12.10.12 | What in the fuck of all fucks is wrong with Autechre's last album?? [2]
Seriously, Adrian what the flying fuck farts | Aids
12.11.12 | how to dress well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Soaringmuse
12.24.12 | I already dislike Mumford and fucks, and after hearing about this I can officially confirm they are the biggest douche bands of 2012.
As for Muse, I was just... speechless. A few years ago they were my favorite band by a while (as this band tends to inspire crazy fans) but with their recent releases as well as my change in taste this is no longer the case. Still seeing them in Feb though, still gonna be awesome as shit. | Soaringmuse
12.24.12 | ^By a mile** | ApplicationToHeaven
12.24.12 | ah expressing opinions, that typical hipster trait | wacknizzle
12.24.12 | @Aids: Minus The Bear and The Shins were always great, the albums they released this year are their weakest though. But some hipsters really like them, only thing that annoys me. | NastyCrab
12.24.12 | Muse and Weezer sold out hard | Ire
01.03.13 | holy shit is hop along on every list of yours? | Spare
01.03.13 | do u rly like freshman year that much more than get disowned rlllllllyyyyyy
