Essential Folk Listening
10 folk/neo-folk/folk ambient albums that are must-haves. |
1 | | Empyrium Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays
This is probably the most beautiful album ever composed, the acoustic work is breathtaking as are the low operatic vocals. Flutes and subtle percussion added into the mix also uplift this glorious folk album. |
2 | | Nest Trail of the Unwary
This is ambient neo folk at it's best. The fantastic kantele sounds better than ever and the atmosphere these songs generate is indescribable. Relaxing, soothing and epic, this is an album to study to and calm you down with amazing folk melodies. |
3 | | Nostatus Sanan Synty
Although considered folk metal by some this album is driven almost wholly by traditional Finnish folk and it rules in every way. Kurra's singing is awesome using the old throat singing style and his kantele playing is fantastic as well. |
4 | | Tenhi Kauan
Easily my favorite album from Tenhi, so much atmosphere between the majestic guitar work and the wonderful chanting vocals make for an amazingly soothing listening experience. |
5 | | October Falls Marras
Some of the most beautifully emotional acoustic folk you will ever hear, simple guitar playing backed up by pianos and soft flutes make up some truly beautiful music. |
6 | | Poropetra Sinihirwi
Boy the Finnish sure do make great folk, anyways this album rules a lot, traditional in nearly all aspects with a great combination of many instruments and vocalists, a great mark in Finnish folk for sure. |
7 | | Of the Wand and The Moon :Emptiness:Emptiness:Emptiness:
Despite the slightly cheesy album title, nothing could be more fitting to describe this music, solemn and dark. This is a kind of folk that you can't help but love, with low almost whispered vocals behind simple instrumentation everything adds up for one great piece of dark folk. |
8 | | Ulver Kveldssanger
Another beautiful folk album, superb guitar work and amazing singing from Garm all enhance the beauty of this album. |
9 | | Sol Invictus Lex Talionis
A very strange folk album, but very enjoyable all at the same time, there are some truly great songs here and Sol Invictus are masters at what they do. |
10 | | Fejd Eld
This album is great Swedish fun. Upbeat folk driven by violins and a wide assortment of instruments with awesome vocals. A great picker upper if I do say so myself. |
