06.17.12 | I use power slinkies and tune to drop C at the lowest, and that works fine |
ChuckyTruant
06.17.12 | ehh thats not enough low end for me. i use either 52's or 54's for drop D. I really like emm pretty tight |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.17.12 | I play a 7 string, which keeps it tight, low and with full range of notes |
wacknizzle
06.17.12 | DR Tite Fit 10's for C, 11's for B. |
ChuckyTruant
06.17.12 | yea johnny I really have no inclination to get a 7 any time soon though. And either way that wouldnt change about strings lol |

06.17.12 | I order Labella's because I play an 8-string. My tuning/gauge:
.009, .012, .015, .022, .030, .040, .054, .074
E, B, G, D, A, E, B, F# |
Eclecticist
06.17.12 | I would upgrade to at least a 7-string. You can tune your 6-string to B but you won't get a good range of notes. Your tuning/gauge would be:
.012, .015, .022, .033, .040, .054
B, G, D, A, E, B |
wacknizzle
06.17.12 | Lots of people play with a 6 string in B, besides a 25 or 25.5 scale neck can handle it with no problem especially if your strings are good, it's mostly about getting proper string tension. |
ChuckyTruant
06.17.12 | yeah, plus drop B is;
B, F#, B, E, G#, C# |

06.17.12 | @wackvagina
- the standard neck of a guitar is '28
- most strings are nickle-wound and vary in test depending on whether you enjoy a standard set, heavy-top/light-bottom, or light-top/heavy-bottom.
- the string tension is what tunes your guitar so obviously it is about the right string tension otherwise you aren't going to have the notes that you want
While your strings may create a tension that it wasn't built for because modern tuning defies classic conventions, you can modify your guitar to cope with the tension by installing a better bridge, installing locking tuners, not using a whammy bar, or by having a locking nut at the top of your bridge.
The bridge is the most important part if tension is a concern, my bridge has a lock for the whammy bar and a lock for tuning.
Sometimes the wood can't handle the tension in which case you have to buy a new guitar but if you are playing in B that almost never happens. |

06.17.12 | My Ibanez is a RG2ex2 and it takes drop B and drop A# fine, I just need some heavier strings |
Eclecticist
06.17.12 | @chucktheman, just buy this http://www.rondomusic.com/product4376.html
sell the .009 if you don't want it or keep it in case you decide to tune back your guitar to standard tuning |

06.17.12 | Ernie Ball Not Even Slinkys. Bottom string is 56. They won't feel quite as tight as 10's in standard tuning though. I use power slinkys normally, but I've used those in the past. |
bloc
06.17.12 | Would a set of 7 stringers work? Just throw out the high E. |
Eclecticist
06.17.12 | ^ ...that is exactly what I said lol |

06.17.12 | d'addario 11's |
ChuckyTruant
06.17.12 | I've used ernie balls. Heaviest they have is 56's. I could get the 7 string set with a 58 but that'd mean my highest string would be a 14. ouch |
Trebor.
06.17.12 | Drop B is gay anyway, unless it's for melodeath

06.17.12 | My tuning's been GCCGC for awhile. Yeah, I only have 5 strings on at the moment. The strings I'm using can go anywhere. I don't really know what they are, though. I've had them on and off of different guitars for 9 years... My other acoustic just uses the basic D'Addario strings because that's all the local music shop carries. |

06.17.12 | I need to buy some strings soon. Might experiment with some Ernie Balls this time. |
wacknizzle
06.17.12 | @Eclecticist: First off don't call me wackvagina, I prefer Dale or Wack. Most guitars have a scale length between 24 and 25.5, 7 strings usually have a 27', I've only ever seen 28 scale on eight strings, it's definitely not standard. When you use downtunings you want to have the proper tension in your strings, too tight or loose will cause you to have a faulty set-up and can damage the guitar's neck if it can't handle the tension or doesn't have enough. Unless you have a whammy bar you shouldn't have to much trouble with the bridge as long as the strings fit properly. The tight fit 10's I have on now work really well with drop C, the 11's are fine for B, possibly A but I haven't tried it. |

06.17.12 | I think I may end up buying singles ernie balls |
ChuckyTruant
06.17.12 | I'll probably go like this with buying single strings:
58-48-38-24-16-12 |
wacknizzle
06.17.12 | Not a bad Idea, I prefer higher gauges on the lower strings and lower gauges on the higher. It's good for drop tunings because it gives you the string tensions you intend. Or you could just buy the Ernie Ball Heavy Top Light Bottoms. |
ChuckyTruant
06.17.12 | Yeah. Well what those strings would be Wack is essentially a heavier light top heavy bottom
Edit: lol I read that backwards but yeah ohwell |
wacknizzle
06.17.12 | Yeah nvm, I just looked those up they only make one kind anyway and the gauge for the low E is only 52 and you want 58. What tuning are you going for? |
ChuckyTruant
06.17.12 | Drop B and ability to play the Architects tuning even if it's a bit loose/floppy |
manicmonkey
06.18.12 | I use heavy top skinny bottom ernie ball's which have been treating me well enough with the lower tuning. I can't stand thick high strings, so these are just right for me.
Check out my mowgli cover if you'd like! http://youtu.be/u9BO7J7CDto |
