Review Summary: Ninja Sex Party has blessed us with their most well-produced, written, thought out, and most diverse and hilarious album yet, which is likely one of the greatest albums of the past decade.
I think many of Ninja Sex Party's fans were curious as to if the band's newest album, Attitude City, would surpass their slightly flawed but amazing previous efforts, Strawberries and Cream and NSFW. Ninja Sex Party truly and seamlessly blended humour and melodic and fantastic compositions.
1. The Comedy
After two albums, I was slightly worried that Ninja Sex Party might hit a wall with trying to create fresh jokes. However, there is never a dull moment on Attitude City, as you will either be laughing hysterically at their more over-the-top lines, or smiling at the clever, subtle lines strewn throughout. There is a joke in almost every line, and none fall flat, and if a line of a song does not contain anything clever of outright hilarious, Ninja Sex Party makes up for it with Danny's fantastic lyricism, creating striking imagery, such as in the eight-and-a-half minute epic that is 6969, where Danny tells the story of creating a time machine and traveling to the world's sexiest year, 6969, only to find out human touch has been outlawed. This song manages to keep itself from dragging throughout the entirety of its runtime. In fact, no song on the album gets too repetitive or overstays its welcome. Songs like "Dubstep" and "Cookies" are short and sweet, created around a joke and finished before it becomes stale. The longer songs on the record stay fresh throughout as a result of the band's smart decision to add different lyrics in subsequent choruses throughout the songs, avoiding to use the same jokes multiple times. The comedy is the heart of Ninja Sex Party, and in Attitude City, the band has mastered the art of combining comedy with the music.
2. The Music
Ninja Brian really outdid himself on this one. His compositions never fail to perfectly underscore the lyrics of the song. A perfect example of this is on the tracks "Cookies" and "Dubstep." In the first of the two, Brian creates a dark and brooding sound while Danny is describing the satanic imagery of the band's metal side, and perfectly transitions the song into a poppy, bubblegum sound when Danny says 'Cookies!' In the latter, Danny asks Ninja Brain to create a dubstep song, but instead plays a piano riff reminiscent of a kids tv show. Although the comedy may be the most important part of the band, the music is almost just as important, as proved in songs where the music adds so much more to the comedy than one would think. In other songs, the music may not add to the comedy, but the layered vocals of Danny and the sometimes melodic yet other times hard-hitting synths of Brain make the songs so much more enjoyable to listen to, as a result of how well written all the music is. If the album doesn't give you a musical eargasm, there is something wrong with you.
3. The Result
With the combination of the equally perfect comedy and music of this album, Ninja Sex Party has finally managed to create a masterpiece, a perfect album which is on par, if not better than some of those by comedy staples Weird Al, The Lonely Island, and Flight of the Concords.
