The Dillinger Escape Plan

The Dillinger Escape Plan is an experimental mathcore band that integrates metal, hardcore, free jazz, varying timesignatures, and electronicsamples. They are known for the intensity and too close for comfort violence of their liveshows, which have been known to feature stage-diving and fire-breathing. The band is rumored to choose their music's timesignatures with the aid of dice, or with the use of some kind ofcode, but this is purelyspeculation. What isn't speculation istheir technical prowess. The band's name refers to John Dillinger, a infamousAmerican criminal who madenumerous bankheist sand prison breaks in the 1930's.Even though the name was spontaneously chosen duringthedissolution of theirpreviousband,Arcane, it metaphorically represents the band's style since Mr. Dillinger's solution to everything was to"shootyour way out."[in-depthbiography]...The Dillinger Escape Plan arose out of the ashes of a mediocre 'Jersey hardcore bandnamed Arcanein the late 1990's. Arcane consisted ofDmitri Minakakis (vocals), Ben Weinman (guitar),Chris Pennie(percussion), Adam Doll(bass), and JeffBrantley (guitar). The group recorded a demo forNow or Never Records under thename 'The Dillinger Escape Plan' and immediately the blandband Arcane was no more. Before their first shows underthenew name, Brantley left the bandand wasquickly replaced by the gifted guitaristJohn Fulton. After recognition (mainly fromthe buzz surroundingtheir liveshows) and acontract from Relapse Records the band recorded theUnder the RunningBoard EP and soon afterwards Fulton left the bandand was replaced by former Jesuit guitaristBrianBenoit.Shortly before the recording of the breakthrough full length,Calculating Infinity,Adam Doll was paralyzed from thechestdown in a car accident and would eventually be replaced with formerStarkweather bassist Liam Wilson.Thetechnically proficient jazzand grindinfluenced full lengthCalculating Infinity gained theband some serious attention, and arguably for thisreason, longstanding otherpersonal reasons the band's vocalist Dmitri Minakakis left the band. Theband allowed for open auditions toreplace himbyposting instrumentalversion of one of their most famous tracks, 43%Burnt, on their website and allowing anyone to perform their own vocals for thesong. Theband decided on Baltimore, MDnative Greg Puciato. In the meantime,Sean Ingram ofCoalesce and MikePatton of [L]Faith NoMore[/L]did someguest vocals for the band. Patton even worked with the other members whilst recording the IronyIs A DeadSceneEP.In 2004, RelapseRecords released the band's first full length album with new singer Greg Puciatoentitled MissMachine. Itturned out to be a major success but didshow a significant change in Dillinger's sound. Also in 2004 whiletouring for their new release, Benoitsuffered nerve damage to his left hand and hasbeen unable to tour with the bandsince. In late 2006, founding member Chris Pennie, lefttheband to joinCoheed and Cambria afterDillinger toured withthenew prog outfit that year. To replace Benoit, Jeff Tuttle(formerlyofHeadsWill Roll and Capture the Flag) joinedthe band. Gil Sharone ofthe avantgarde band StolenBabiestook over percussion dutiesfor their newest album IreWorks, which was released in 2007 byRelapseRecords.IreWorks has been met with mixed reviews asitfeaturedmuch more electronics and less of the chaotic hardcore-infused metalthat the band became famous for. Currently, it isunknown ifSharone is still a permanent member of the band. For thetime being, a young lad namedBillyRhymer is takingover drum duties for the band'slive shows. In the summer of 2009, after Relapse allowed their contract to expire, the bandsignedwith independent label Season of Mist.Season of Mist is best known for their array of foreign pure metal bands, butrecently released a major hit withlegendary Americanprogressive metal outfit Cynic and their reunion album Traced InAir.Ben Weinman (the band's only remaining foundingmember) has saidthat the yplan to release a new album early in2010 and it is expected that the band will be back in studio with long. time producerSteveEvettsin July of 2009. Weinmanhas expressed his desire to have Dillinger's music appeal to a underground fan base and has said that theirnewmaterial isdark and dreary with heavy thrash metal influence. « hide
