theirtechnical prowess. The band's name refers to John Dillinger, a infamous American criminal who made numerous bank heists
and prison breaks in the 1930's.Even though the name was spontaneously chosen duringthe dissolution of their previous band,
Arcane, it metaphorically represents the band's style sinceMr. Dillinger's solution to everything was to "shoot your way out..
[in-depth biography]...The Dillinger Escape Plan arose out of the ashes of a mediocre 'Jersey hardcore band namedArcane in
the late 1990's. Arcane consisted of Dmitri Minakakis (vocals), Ben Weinman (guitar),Chris Pennie (percussion), Adam Doll
(bass), and Jeff Brantley (guitar). The group recorded a demofor Now or Never Records under the name 'The Dillinger Escape
Plan' and immediately the blandband Arcane was no more. Before their first shows under the new name, Brantley left the band
and was quickly replaced by the gifted guitaristJohn Fulton. After recognition (mainly from the buzz surrounding their live
shows) and a contract from Relapse Records the band recordedthe Under the Running Board EP and soon afterwards
Fulton left the band and was replaced by former Jesuit guitarist BrianBenoit. Shortly before the recording of the
breakthrough full length,Calculating Infinity, Adam Doll was paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident and would
eventually be replaced with formerStarkweather bassist Liam Wilson. The technically proficient jazz and grind
influenced full length Calculating Infinity gained theband some serious attention, and arguably for this reason, and
amongst other personal reasons the band's vocalist Dmitri Minakakis left theband. The band allowed for open auditions to
replace himby posting a instrumental version of one of their most famous tracks, 43% Burnt, on their website and allowing
anyone to perform their ownvocals for the song. The band decided on Baltimore, MD native Greg Puciato. In the meantime,
Sean Ingram of Coalesce and MikePatton of Faith No More did some guest vocals for the band. Patton even
worked with the other members whilst recording the IronyIs A Dead Scene EP.In 2004, Relapse Records released the
band's first full length album with new singer Greg Puciatoentitled Miss Machine. It turned out to be a major success but
did show a significant change in Dillinger's sound. Also in 2004 whiletouring for their new release, Benoit suffered nerve
damage to his left hand and has been unable to tour with the band since. In late 2006, founding member Chris Pennie, left the
band to join Coheed and Cambria afterDillinger toured with the new prog outfit that year. To replace Benoit, Jeff Tuttle
(formerly ofHeads Will Roll and Capture the Flag) joined the band. Gil Sharone of the avantgardeband [L]Stolen
Babies[/L] took over percussion duties for their newest album Ire Works, which was released in 2007 by RelapseRecords.
Ire Works has been met with mixed reviews as itfeatured much more electronics and less of the chaotic hardcore.
infused metal that the bandbecame famous for. Currently, it is unknown if Sharone is still a permanent member of the band.
For the time being, a young lad named BillyRhymer is taking over drum duties for the band's live shows. In the summer of 2009
, after Relapse allowed their contract to expire, the band signed with independent label Season of Mist. Season ofMist is best
known for their array of foreign pure metal bands, but recently released a major hit with legendary American progressive
metaloutfit Cynic and their reunion album Traced In Air.Ben Weinman (the band's only remaining founding member) has
said that they plan to release a new album early in 2010 and it is expectedthat the band will be back in studio with long-time
producerSteve Evetts in July of 2009. Weinman has expressed his desire to have Dillinger's music appeal to a underground
fanbase and has saidthat their new material is dark and dreary with heavy thrashmetal influence. « hide |
