Live were a four-piece alt-rock band from York, Pennsylvania. Consisting of Ed Kowalczyk (guitar/vocals), Pat Dahlheimer (bass), Chad Gracey (drums), and Chad Taylor (guitar), Live catapulted to fame on the strength of the spiritual, U2-inflected songwriting styles of 1994's Throwing Copper. While coming out in the wake of the post-grunge revival, in which more musicianly literate bands took Nirvana's harsh subject matter and combined them for mainstream success, Live took an equal amount from groups such as U2 and REM and were noted for being more overtly spiritual (and optimistic) than their doomy, depressed contemporaries.
