Kate Bush

A prodigy of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, Londoner Kate Bush signed her first record contract (with EMI) at aged 16, but didn't release her first record, 'The Kick Inside,' until four years later, in 1978.

The album was a huge success, mostly due to the surprise hit single 'Wuthering Heights,' topping the UK charts upon its release. Her distinctive three-octave voice, literary-based lyrics and eclectic personality somehow found a niche in the late 80s pop scene and made her a celebrity.

Her second release, 'Lionheart,' followed the same year, along with heavy promotion and a world tour. This aspect of business made Bush uncomfortable and this, coupled with her dissatisfaction at what she felt was a rushed album, prompted Bush to make it the only tour of her career.

Bush slowly began to withdraw from public life, taking more and more responsibility for her own output. Through the 80s she developed a slow and painstaking approach to recording, only emerging from her private world for sporadic album releases, which began less and less common throughout the late 80s and 90s.

In November 2005, Bush released the double-CD 'Aerial,' her first original album since 1993's 'The Red Shoes,' peaking at #3 in the UK Album Charts. The first single from the album, 'King of the Mountain,' was released in September 2005 and peaked at #4 in the UK singles charts. « hide
