Converge
Metalcore, Hardcore

Salem road dogs, Converge, are quite possibly the biggest name in the punk underground today.

Legendary name among punk-metal followers, Converge are widely considered a one of a kind in it's own brand of metalcore, which has subsequently earned them the title of "One of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground", apart from an enormous cult following.

Formed in 1990, after several singles and the requisite growing pains, released their first full-length, Halo in a Haystack, in1994, to mixed reception and a relatively unimpressed crowd. By the next album, Petitioning the Empty Sky, Convergeascended directly into underground stardom, and were eventually considered some of the minds of their generation, alongsideother acts such as Botch and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

But if Petitioning The Empty Sky was the equivalent of a giant, then their fourth release, Jane Doe, could be classified as abehemoth, not only bringing to full light what could be seen with metal qualities in punk to sort of an underground mainstream, they were revered as one of the most emotionally charged and imposing bands around, and truly what has made them obtainthe mayority of the following, which they continue to have to date. Jane Doe's, that of a woman desintegrating into thin air, also received high acclaim, and has not just Converge's de facto icon, but it's also one of the most iconic images in theunderground.

A quartet consisting of Jacob Bannon, Kurt Ballou, Nate Newton and Ben Koller, the band also found time to lend out membersto various side projects, including Kingdom of the Sun, Old Man Gloom and Kid Kilowatt (the short-lived band that also includedmembers of Cave In). Trudging along, the band during that time played over 600 shows with varying success -- their hard hasallowed to retain(and increase) their fandom without any sort of obligation or preassure from the sort of fame from punk actsin the radio and television. « hide
