Between the Buried and Me

Between the Buried and Me was founded in 2000 in Raleigh, North Carolina by vocalist Thomas Giles Rogers Jr., guitarist Paul Waggoner, drummer Will Goodyear, guitarist Nick Fletcher (formerly of Empire Falls), and bassist JasonKing. The band's name is derived from a section of lyrics in the CountingCrows song, 'Ghost Train': "Took the cannon ball down to the ocean/Across the desert from the sea to shining sea/I rode a ladder that climbed across the nation/Fifty million feet of earth between the buried and me".

Between The Buried And Me's first release was a three-song demo, containing the tracks 'Use Of AWeapon','WhatWeHaveBecome', and 'More Of Myself To Kill'. These three tracks were re-recorded for the band's self. titled debut album,released through Lifeforce Records in 2002. The albumincludes the track'Arsonist', a protest against the beliefs and practices of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. Thesong 'Aspirations' becamethe band's first music video.Atthetime,the release was not widely known, but didmanage to catch the attention of Victory Records, towhichtheylatersigned.Victory reissued the album in2004 as an enhanced CD.

In 2003, the band released their second studio album,The Silent Circus, featuringthesingles'Mordecai','Aesthetic',and'CamillaRhodes'.'Mordecai' was produced as their secondmusic video. The album was re-released in2006 withalive DVD ofthe band's performance at The Cat'sCradlein Chapel Hill, North Carolina on July 17,2005.Mark Castilloplayeddrums on TheSilent Circus,replacing Will Goodyear, though for the live DVDBlakeRichardson, DustieWaring, and DanBriggshadalreadyjoined the band, and recording for the thirdBetween The Buried And Me album,Alaska,wasalreadyfinished.

After the release of The Silent Circus, the bandwent through numerous members beforethecurrentlineupwasassembled for Alaska.Ondrums,Mark Castillo was replaced by Jason Roe, andlater by BlakeRichardson. Onguitar,NickFletcher wasreplaced by Shane Blay, and later by DustieWaring. Andon bass, Jason King (not tobeconfusedwiththeirengineer/producer Jamie King) wasreplaced by Kevin Falk, and later by Dan Briggs.Thisremains thecurrent lineup.

In the summer of 2005, Between The Buried And Mereleased their third studio album, Alaska. Thetitletrackbecametheirthird music video.Thealbumfeatured the songs 'Selkies: The Endless Obsession','The Primer', and'BackwardsMarathon'assingles. Thenin the following year, the bandreleased The AnatomyOf, a collection of coversofbandsthatinfluencedBetween The Buried And Me,including Metallica, King Crimson, Pantera,Queen, PinkFloyd, EarthCrisis,CountingCrows, andSoundgarden.

In September 2007, the band released their fourthstudio album, Colors. Band members have saidthat . it'sa65minuteopus of non-stop,pummeling,beautiful music... we have described this release as'new wave polka grunge'."Theband hasalsodescribed the album as "adultcontemporaryprogressive death metal".

On November 6, 2008 the song 'Prequel To The Sequel'was made available as downloadable contentforthevideogameRockBand 2, for free downloadtousers who redeemed a one-time use code in newcopies of the game.Sincethen,thetracks 'Mordecai','Obfuscation', 'Alaska' and 'Selkies: TheEndlessObsession' have also been madeavailableviatheRockBandNetwork.

On May 31, 2009, the group went into the studio torecord their fifth original album, TheGreatMisdirect.Theyhavedescribed one song ashaving"a noisy Coalesce breakdown, 3/4 Mastodongroove, 9/8 The MarsVolta,Queenchromaticbuildup,and Megadeth chorus". Tommy Giles Rogershadstated that they planned to "out doColors".

In early fall 2010, the group confirmed that they wererecording an EP, which was cited as being apossibleprecursorfortheirnext full-lengthalbum.InOctober 2010, they put up a video on theirYouTube account with the bandinthestudio.January18a second teaser with them in thestudio was posted.

On February 21, 2011, Between The Buried And Mestated their move from Victory to Metal BladeRecords,onwhichtheyreleased their EP, entitledTheParallax: Hypersleep Dialogues on April 12, 2011. InMay, VictoryRecordsannouncedtherelease of a greatesthits album as a three-disc set.On January 16, 2012,Between The Buried AndMerevealed that workonthepart two to The Parallax has begun and it will be afull-length albumrather than an EP.
