Following the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl stuck to his musical ambitions
prior to joining Nirvana, and went on to form the Foo Fighters in 1996 and produced his first record,
self entitled: Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl recorded every instrument part and vocals of the album.
Wanting to tour the self entitled album and also avoiding being called a solo project, Grohl picked up
a band. Foo Fighters were in the beginning:
Dave Grohl (guitar, vocals)
Nate Mendel(Bass)
Pat Smear(Guitar)
William Goldsmith(Drums)
This line up then changed when Pat Smear and William Goldsmith left for "musical differences".
Firstly, William left band, during the recording of The Colour and the Shape. Reasons are for Dave
re-recording his drums due to "lack of passion in his playing" (quoted from Dave Grohl). Taylor
Hawkins joined shortly after. In 1997, at the MTV Music Awards, Pat Smear announced he was
leaving and Franz Stahl, from Dave's pre-Nirvana band Scream, joined them to play Monkey
Wrench. Franz then left, leaving them a three man band for the recording of There Is Nothing Left To
Lose. This however changed when recording One By One, when in stepped Chris Shiflett to
complete the quartet again.
Foo Fighters have gone on to produce a 2-disc album titled "In Your Honor." The first disc includes
rock songs and the second disc includes softer, acoustic songs. They later released a CD and a
DVD recording of their acoustic tour entitled "Skin and Bones" in which Pat Smear toured with the
Foo Fighters once again. The band's sixth studio album "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace" was
released in late 2007.
