My Bloody Valentine
Indie

Named after a slasher flick, My Bloody Valentine aren't as heavy or violent as their name suggests. They're a unique mixture of dream pop, ambient, and layers of droning fuzzy guitars, and pioneers of shoegaze, a term coined by the British Press. It's no surprise though, My Bloody Valentine embody the term perfectly, sublime waves of grand guitar sound, timid boy/girl vocals, and basically ignoring the audience live.

My Bloody Valentine formed in 1984, Dublin, Ireland, with childhood friends Kevin Shields and Colm O'Ciosoig. They spent the following years releasing EPS and a mini-album while still gathering themselves and constantly jumping labels. By 1987 their male vocalist Dave Conway left, and replaced with guitarist/vocalist Bilinda Butcher, a vital addition to their sound, which was changing to an airier pop, influenced by The Jesus & Mary Chain. In 1988 they finally released their first album, Isn't Anything. The following years they gathered a following in both Britain and the US, but in 1989 they disappeared to go work on their follow-up.

Rumours went around in the press that Shields was a perfectionist as time kept on passing without a sophomore album. The delay was a mixture of indeed perfectionism and recording sessions never really taking off, as Kevin Shields notes, "The reason it took so long was because we started out on the wrong foot and never got back on the right one. Right up until the last minute, we kept thinking we would be finished in a couple more months - two years of thinking we would be finished in a couple more months." Finally, in 1991, Loveless was released, as was an estimated $500 000 studio bill for Creation Records, bankrupting the label. The album was released to critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. Today, it's cited as one of the best albums of the 90s, and as one that redefined what could be done in pop music.

The band basically disappeared afterwards, with no activity from My Bloody Valentine. O'Ciosoig and Googe left between 1993 and 1997. Shields had reportedly created albums then shelved them, because of his fear of releasing anything inferior to Loveless under the Valentine name. He's worked with Primal Scream and on songs from a movie in recent years, but nothing else. The band hasn't officially broken up, Butcher and Shields still members. Butcher, Shields and O'Ciosoig were rumoured to be recording new material between 2003 and 2004, but nothing has surfaced. A boxset was rumoured to be released between late '05/early '06, but nothing still. « hide
